crimycarny's JournalJapan developed drug shows promise against coronavirus
This is very hopeful: https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Coronavirus/China-says-Japan-developed-drug-Avigan-works-against-coronavirus|
Patients taking favipiravir tested negative after a median of four days, compared to 11 days in the control group, according to Zhang. There were no clear side effects, he added.
Another clinical trial in Wuhan revealed that patients treated with favipiravir recovered from fever in 2.5 days on average, versus 4.2 days for other patients. Coughing symptoms also improved within 4.6 days -- about 1.4 days earlier than those who did not take the drug.
Only 8.2% of the patients taking favipiravir needed respiratory aids, whereas 17.1% of the patients in the control group were put on devices.
Another article about this drug from the nypost. https://nypost.com/2020/03/18/japanese-flu-drug-clearly-effective-in-treating-coronavirus-officials-say/
"Researchers also found that the lung condition improved in about 91 percent of the patients who were given the medicine, compared to 62 percent of those who didnt take it, according to the local media outlet Nikkei"
Coworker (works remote) tested positive
A co-worker of mine just announced in our (online) staff meeting that he tested positive for coronavirus. He is in his 30's and in good health. We were asking what his symptoms were and I'm passing them on.
1) Had a couple of weeks of bad sneezing, like allergies (may or may not be related as he suffers from allergies)
2) Woke up with a really bad headache about 3 days ago. He never gets headaches so it was unusual
3) That night he experienced a bad case of chills, worst chills he remembers ever having
4) Fever of 101.3
5) No respiratory symptoms at all
6) tested positive today
This virus seems to be all over the place with symptoms but apparently the main symptom that my co-worker mentioned was how bad the chills were.
He is feeling fine, symptoms haven't worsened since they first started about 3 days ago. He's actually feeling a bit better (no fever), just really tired.
I wanted to pass it on for what it's worth. This guy works from home so didn't effect anyone on our team. He's also been super careful about hand hygiene way before he got sick, so that's good.
"Welfare has done far more damage to the Black family than slavery could ever do"
That is what a co-worker of mine just said to me. I was so dumbstruck that I wasn't even sure how to respond. (Of course he is of white privilege, as am I). I finally replied "You're kidding, right? Blacks were murdered, raped, beaten, and their children wrenched from them and sold. They were PROPERTY of white men. And you say that "welfare" has done far more damage? There are so many things wrong with that statement I don't even know where to start. Your offensive comments about slavery aside, why do you only mention blacks when you speak of "welfare". 40% of welfare recepients are white 25% black, 15% Hispanic."
He doubled down with: "During the worst of slavery, the black family was totally nuclear and intact. The only thing that broke it up was the the actions of slave owners." Meaning, I guess, that the black slaves were living Leave to Beaver type lives even as slaves. If it weren't for those pesky slave owners raping, murdering, beating, forcing their kids to work, selling their kids--yeah, outside of that it was a nice intact family!
I finally just responded with "I can't have this discussion with you" and walked away.
This whole conversation started with a discussion on abortion. He was making the statement that "totally healthy women are aborting totally healthy babies in their 3rd trimester". I'm like "uh, I don't think it happening.". He argued it was and said those women should be put in jail. I asked him "ok so if you want to make sure that these totally healthy babies aren't aborted, what is your proposal to make sure they live after they are born? What are your proposals to provide them access to medical care, food, school, etc? Because it seems that those most opposed to abortion are also the most opposed to helping people in poverty, which is far more likely to cause the death of a child/baby than abortion in the 3rd trimester." That is when he went into the welfare state crap.
I just had to vent. I feel like I did a sh*tty job of arguing my point. I'm not good at that. I get too angry and emotional and end up babbling. That's why I walked away.
NASA images show dramatic drop in China pollution during production slowdown (coronavirus)
Dramatic satellite images show a sharp decline in pollution over China due to the production slowdown during the coronavirus. Wow look at that lovely blue! They also saw a decrease in nitrogen oxide levels.
Is it possible we still have time to reverse climate change if such a dramatic effect can be seen by a production slow down? What if we were able to slow down pollution across the entire planet by massive and fast investment in clean energy? Uphill battle but seeing this dramatic difference in pollution levels gave me some hope.

Michael J. Fox on Pete Buttigieg
I stumbled across this video of Michael J. Fox speaking in NH about Pete Buttigieg. I thought it at interesting observation on Pete's Buttigieg's appeal which is a calm and studied demeanor. Unfortunately in Pete's case, his strength is his weakness. Obama was able to perfectly balance hopeful ideology with calm thoughtfulness. Pete seems sincere, intelligent, and someone capable of changing his opinion over time (like Obama did on gay marriage), but he just doesn't stir up an emotional response like Obama. Even when he is speaking passionately about something he sounds more like he is reading a spreadsheet. I like Pete Buttigieg BTW, I just don't feel he stirs up enough emotion to get people out to vote.
P.S. I apologize if someone already posted this.
Just changed my Democratic Primary preference to Elizabeth Warren
Previously I supported Pete Buttigieg as the Democratic Primary candidate, but I've since changed my mind to Elizabeth Warren. I still like Pete Buttigieg but his initial impact on me has diminished over time. I think he has a great future as a major player in the Democratic party, but he seems to have lost his way a bit. Maybe it's just me, but when he was an underdog he seemed more dynamic and--I dunno--bold? His calling Trump the "Porn Star President" are words I think he'd be too cautious to utter now. He's lost some of his uniqueness and sparkle in his bid to reach a wider audience. Sort of a watered-down version of his initial candidacy. I think he'll regain his footing, but not in time for 2020.
I've always liked Elizabeth Warren but my initial concerns were that she was too one-dimensional. Amazing when it comes to consumer protections, taking on big banks, etc, but not so great when it comes to things like Foreign Policy, etc. I also felt she might be seen as too radical to the midwestern and southern type voter---the whole "socialist" term being (incorrectly) used to paint her as some sort of communist. But I've gradually changed my mind on that. She speaks to the middle class and lower-income classes with an authenticity that Hillary couldn't master and I think that will overcome any skepticism or fear. As opposed to Pete, Warren seems to be getting better at reaching her audience the longer she is in the race. She is amazing on her feet and I'd trust her with Foreign Policy or pretty much any issue our Nation would run across.
All of that being said I will be grateful to vote for any of the Democratic candidates.
Really CNN? "Biden denied communion"
This has been a headline on their page for the last couple of days. The headline is written in a way to imply it's something "bad" and unusual versus something that has happened to many Democratic presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the past. And it's not about Joe Biden as a person, it's due to his support for abortion rights. Of course, that is left out of the headline as well. Towards the end of the article is this sentence:
"Catholic Democratic presidential and vice-presidential candidates have been denied communion over their support for abortion rights several times in recent decades -- at times exposing deep cultural rifts between conservative and moderate Catholics in the church's hierarchy."
This thing has been up for two days now, it's not breaking news and I couldn't care less.
University of Houston Women's Soccer Team players develop rhabdomyolosis after "punishment workout"
Wow, just saw this article today. The punishment workout actually happened on 2/2018 but there was a report on this released June 14, 2019. The University of Houston women's soccer team was subjected to a punishment workout because 2 players ate some food meant for the football team (yes, seriously--that was their crime). They were exercised so harshly that 12 developed rhabdomyolysis--a serious condition that can result in renal failure. One player was hospitalized for 5 days. How is the Head Coach still coaching? The strength and training coach was fired, but it was the head coach who admitted in an email that he uses "physical punishment". In fact, "physical punishment" was in the Women's Soccer Team manual.
"Players were scared: The player said Bocanegra uttered obscenities as many struggled. Get up, Get the F up. This is your fault. Get up,' just, like, over and over again, she said. She said the team was too fearful to speak up. "No one was going to say anything. Everyone was so scared." The workout lasted for nearly an hour and the player said she felt tortured almost afterward."

Bizarre and terrifying derealization experience--panic attack?
I had the most terrifying experience a couple of days ago which landed me in the ER. I have anxiety (GAD) but I've never had a panic attack before. I'm wondering if this is what I experienced?
Basically, I woke up that morning feeling fine. Went for a run around noon and sort of putzed around the house for a few hours. I laid down at around 6:00 pm to watch a soccer game when all of a sudden I was hit with this sensation of being sort of "out of it". I don't know how to describe it. My ears started ringing very loudly, my legs felt weak and I had a burning sensation in my feet, I felt nauseous, I was hit with vertigo, and my vision seemed affected as well (not as in blurred vision, more as in distorted vision--like looking down at my legs they seemed 10 feet away).
I knew where I was but I had this overwhelming fear that "something is wrong with me". I called my brother who has had panic attacks. I remember talking to him and answering him, but it felt like I had to concentrate very hard to stay focused on what he was saying and how to respond.
I got my husband from outside and he tried helping me to calm down. But the sensation just got worse. I thought I might have low blood sugar or something so had him get me some juice, but that didn't help. Tried to wait it out but the sensation just got worse and I felt like I was dying. I told my husband "I really feel like I'm going to die".
Long story short we went to the ER and they did an EKG, CAT Scan, CT Scan with contrast, and did some blood work. All tests were normal though I was very slightly dehydrated. I finally started feeling better around 10 pm, so about 4 hours after the whole thing started.
I still have ear ringing but it's getting a bit better with time. I still have the weird sensation of burning feet (not painful, just annoying).
Anyone else ever have a panic attack that manifested as a depersonalization/derealization type sensation?
