LORDSTOWN, Ohio -
More workers in the Valley have been put on notice that they will lose their jobs because of General Motors decision to end production of the Chevy Cruise at GMs Assembly Complex in Lordstown.
However, the notice submitted by Magnas Lordstown Seating Systems under the federal WARN Act holds out hope that GM may yet replace the Cruze with another vehicle in Lordstown.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification dated December 14, 2018, but posted this week by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says that Magna expects to lay off virtually all of its 120 workers from its plant at 1702 Henn Parkway SW in Lordstown.
The company says it will cease production no later than March 1, 2019, with layoffs beginning on February 28, but possibly as early as February 25 and no later than March 8.
Although the letter says layoffs of the 120 UAW Local 1112 members are expected to last longer than six months, the notice leaves room for the possibility of a new GM product for Lordstown.
Should General Motors allocate a future product to the Lordstown Assembly, we would hope to be selected as a seat supplier, which may allow us to recall a significant number of employees. If a future product is not allocated by General Motors and/or we are not selected as the seat supplier for the future product, these layoffs should be considered permanent.
Even before GM announced plans to stop making the Cruze here, leaders from UAW Local 1112 and the community began planning the Drive it Home campaign to have the automaker commit to producing another vehicle in Lordstown.
The WARN notice posted by GM earlier this month announced the layoff of the remaining 1,607 workers on the first shift at Lordstown, which at one time operated three shifts until the company began cutbacks due to declining sales of the Cruze.

Nothing but job losses
I feel sorry for the auto workers who will be losing their jobs. But why did people expect that a failed businessman would be able to run this country? They handed our precious land to a destructive vicious beast.
