Brexit: government 'operating on assumption' of no deal, say Gove

The government is “operating on the assumption” that Britain will leave the European Union without a deal on 31 October, Michael Gove has said.

The new chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, who is in charge of no-deal preparations in the Cabinet Office, said there was a “very real prospect”(£) that an agreement would not be struck with Brussels before that deadline.

Writing in the Sunday Times, he said that while the aim was still to leave with a deal, the government needed to prepare for every eventuality. “With a new prime minister, a new government, and a new clarity of mission, we will exit the EU on October 31. No ifs. No buts. No more delay. Brexit is happening,” he said.

“The EU’s leaders have, so far, said they will not change their approach – it’s the unreformed withdrawal agreement, take it or leave it,” he added. “We still hope they will change their minds, but we must operate on the assumption that they will not.”

Their recklessness is beyond the pale. The mostly male pale and stale millionaires who would be cushioned from crashing out actively seeking this for personal political ambition. It is an outrage.

Racist Nasty Wanker Dissembling 101...

POTUS claimed his issue with the Squad was how they talked about America. Cummings district is part of America.

But, it is not WHITE NATIVIST America, so it is not real America - everyone knows that

Distraction politics is the name of the game...

After another week of ‘presidential’ temper tantrums, lies and overreach of powers it is clear as the toupee on his rather odd shaped head, that Trump has a clear strategy, that is being implemented on an ongoing basis, to reduce politics to the lowest common denominator - simplify every message into a barely coherent strap-line and always have something and /or someone to blame for what inevitably will be a failure 90% of the time.

If this seems familiar that is because it is. Look at the situation on the border as an example. This is a humanitarian crisis. This administration has used this crisis of their own making to justify ICE overreach on deportations. We see clear examples of this demonization of other throughout history. To have someone to really blame for policy failures and inadequacies as leaders, a populist wanker will encourage commotion, othering and provide inspiration for ‘send her back’, etc. To his base ‘they are not one of us and therefore we don't care what happens to them’. Last century the Nazi’s did the same thing when their simplified populist cries failed to produce meaningful change…. and we all know how that turned out.

It would be rather refreshing if the decision making of a Trump (or a Boris) were grounded in some category of ethical or rational reasoning, rather than just creating deep divisions in society based on fermenting bias, intolerance, McCarthyism and xenophobia to galvanise a horrid 'base'. Why anybody of any demographic would still vote for this racist, sexist, nativist nut-job is beyond mind-boggling for people of reason. BUT distraction politics is the name of the game. It works for people with an attention span of 30 seconds who won't hear or refuse to understand reasoned arguments but will the hear chanted slogans of the right-wing populist.

After all…

The left offers intellectual reasoning, the right offers simplification and demonization.

‘’A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices.’’ George Orwell

Just gonna leave this here....

Trump be like...

Great graphic!!!!

Can you hear the Chants of 'Lock Him Up' 'Lock Him Up'...?

I can...

Racism: It no longers means quite what you think it means

In the rest of the quote in the thread title Kofi goes on to say..

“Ignorance and prejudice are the handmaidens of propaganda. Our mission, therefore, is to confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity. Racism can, will, and must be defeated.”
― Kofi Annan

I fear we are slightly behind the racist right wing curve on this one at the moment.. Propaganda is the name of the game...

The con man with the keys to the kingdom

he deed is done. The Conservative Party has imposed upon Britain, at a time of profound national crisis, a prime minister who is spectacularly unfit for the job, both morally and politically. It has installed in an office once held by the likes of Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee a liar, an adulterer and a pedlar of fantasies who is so utterly lacking in principle and integrity that he is willing to sacrifice the nation’s future on the altar of his own ambition. Boris Johnson’s arrival in No 10 is a mortifying development for the once-proud United Kingdom, one that has astonished a world that used to regard Britain as a model of caution and common sense.

Johnson gained access to Downing Street through a travesty of an election that even Vladimir Putin mocked (though both he and President Trump would have cheered the result). The Tory leadership contest was like a slow-motion coup d’état. It had the trappings of democracy – hustings, a televised debate, policy platforms, opinion polls, endorsements. But 99.75 per cent of the electorate was forced to watch impotently from the sidelines, as in a banana republic, while the candidates shamelessly pandered to the tiny, anonymous cabal of 160,000 predominantly older, southern, white, wealthy, male right-wing Conservative Party members that chose the country’s new leader. And many of those 160,000 were recent Ukip infiltrators.
