About Me

I am a Brit. I am a working class child of the troubles in Belfast who now lives a life of privilege. I am an anti-racist, progressive monster for truth. If I fail in being that monster, call me out....

Journal Archives

Today I made 177 people redundant and this is how I will look right now....

I am the Ops Director of a national Training Company and the Tories have tanked us. Contracts withdrawn because we failed to achieve GSCE grades for girls, working and training as nursery nurses, who had been failed for years by our education system, by a stupid fucking policy they brought in to a minimum wage occupation (to hug a baby they decided you need A-C in Maths and English - of course if they got A-C why would they be going for such a shitting paying job in the first place?). They have changed their mind now, but it is too little too late. A company who has been delivering Apprenticeships for 25 years has been fucked. I will be good. I have no mortgage, a few years salary in the bank and have a very good rep in the industry, but for those I told today that you no longer have a job it fucking sucks. So I will get drunk tonight and then tomorrow start working on a plan to help as many as I can to get a really great new life.

Chelsea to Sarah Sanders: Ted Nugent once called Hillary 'c*nt'--Trump invited HIM to the White House

The White House and most every GOP political pundit demanded that TBS drop Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal” show, and compared Bee’s comment about Ivanka to Roseanne Barr’s extreme racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett. ABC canceled Roseanne’s hit comeback show, and rather than being outraged with Roseanne’s comment, Republicans are thirsty for revenge—and Samantha Bee looked like a good target.

That’s why they were probably surprised when Chelsea Clinton got on Twitter Thursday afternoon and helped remind the White House, and the world, of that time in 1994 when Trump-supporting gun-enthusiast and former musician Ted Nugent called Hillary, the then First Lady of the United States— a “c*nt” during a magazine interview.

Yeppers. Faux outrage called out!

Top Democrat just suggested the chilling, real reason for Trump's haphazard pardons

The list of “witnesses” to which Sen. Warner is referring includes figures like Michael Cohen, Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, and Rick Gates – all of whom are either under criminal investigation (Cohen); indicted and awaiting trial (Manafort); or have flipped under a plea deal and are cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

And the message he’s sending is this: Keep your mouth shut, take whatever punishment you’re given, and you’ll be pardoned.

President Trump has the constitutionally delineated power to pardon criminals and felons convicted of federal crimes, and/or commute their sentences. All presidents do. They can even execute this power without providing any justification, legal or otherwise. They were given that power by the framers of the Constitution in order to quickly right any wrongs that time or circumstances revealed in a particular ruling or sentencing.

Has American democracy ever been under so much threat as it is right now??

FTSE company boards' excuses for not appointing women, translated for the 21st century

The government is reviewing the lack of women on top company boards. Here are the top ten excuses it has heard from FTSE 350 company heads – translated for the modern world:

1. “I don’t think women fit comfortably into the board environment”

TRANSLATION: “I can’t be bothered to change a culture built on centuries of male domination that I, for some reason, am really familiar and comfortable with but women just aren’t?”

2. “There aren’t that many women with the right credentials and depth of experience to sit on the board – the issues covered are extremely complex”

TRANSLATION: “I’m secretly terrified that someone will notice I only got to where I am due to white male mediocrity and I actually have no idea what I’m doing and have never truly understood my job. I am a sad ghost in a tie.”

3. “Most women don’t want the hassle or pressure of sitting on a board”

TRANSLATION: “For some reason women find other jobs to do than work for companies that are disproportionately run by desiccated old sexists like me.”

4. “Shareholders just aren’t interested in the make-up of the board, so why should we be?”

TRANSLATION: “Our shareholders are also all men.”

Heh. Male Privilege Writ Large

US liberal Islamophobia is rising - and is more insidious than rightwing bigotry

When will Muslims step up and reform Islam?” asked the self-identified “progressive and intersectional” college student, following a presentation of my book, American Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots and Rise of Fear, at New York University.

The student wore a Black Lives Matter T-shirt and a colorful assortment of pins and patches on his camouflage backpack calling for “equality now” and claiming that “The future is female”. The young man, by way of verbal admission and the myriad of political statements he proudly wore, was a political progressive. And indeed, a representative of a swelling population of leftists who embrace progressive principles yet see Islam as inimical to liberal values and in conflict with American identity.
Liberal Islamophobia is rising, in the United States and beyond, and rapidly metastasizing in the shadows while its tentacles on the right extend in the form of presidential rhetoric, state-sponsored travel bans and expanding surveillance. Yet, liberal Islamophobia may reveal itself to be more ominous than the bigotry trumpeted by Republican stalwarts and reactionary conservatives, particularly if we continue to ignore its uptick on television, college campuses, and liberal spaces beyond and in between.
