About Me

I am a Brit. I am a working class child of the troubles in Belfast who now lives a life of privilege. I am an anti-racist, progressive monster for truth. If I fail in being that monster, call me out....

YET AGAIN Standing on on the wrong side of human rights

The Daily Beast reports:

Mike Pompeo, the U.S. secretary of state, and the State Department have declined to directly condemn a new law in Brunei stipulating the stoning to death of LGBT people. In follow-up questions, The Daily Beast then asked if Pompeo and the State Department specifically objected to the violently anti-LGBT law, set to take effect on April 3. A spokesperson declined to directly address the question.

Instead, the department issued a more general statement to The Daily Beast: “Governments have an obligation to ensure that all people, including LGBTI people, can freely enjoy the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms to which they are entitled. We strongly oppose human rights violations and abuses against LGBTI persons, including violence, the criminalization of LGBTI status or conduct, and serious forms of discrimination.”

Trump Threatens to Close Border Next Week 'If Mexico Doesn't Immediately Stop All Illegal

Immigration’

President Donald Trump revealed in a late Friday morning tweet storm that unless Mexico immediately and completely end all illegal immigration into the United States, he plans to close down the border, or large sections of the border, next week.

Trump Crowd Chants "AOC Sucks."

They always need an object of hate, and FoxNews and Trump have picked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She is everything Trump and his idiot son are not: smart, caring, a person of color, a woman, a decent human being, and a working class background. So Trump’s crowd of rejects and scum chants at her. She is the New Hillary they want to lock up — a woman who is better than many of them ever will be.

Part of the crowd at a Trump rally in Michigan started chanting "AOC sucks," referencing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), after Donald Trump Jr. criticized her ideas.

“Think about the fact that every mainstream, leading Democratic contender is taking the advice of a freshman congresswoman who three weeks ago didn’t know the three branches of government,” the president's son told the crowd ahead of President Trump's speech. “I don’t know about you guys, but that’s pretty scary.”

After his remark, the crowd broke into the "AOC sucks" chant.

First of all pissants...

Secondly, they do realise that this means we know how much she scares them, right?

Confronting racism is not about the needs and feelings of white people

One of the very first responses I received from a white commenter was: “OK, but isn’t it better than nothing?”

Is it? Is a little erasure better than a lot of erasure? Is a little white supremacy leaked into our anti-racism work better than no anti-racism work at all? Every time I stand in front of an audience to address racial oppression in America, I know that I am facing a lot of white people who are in the room to feel less bad about racial discrimination and violence in the news, to score points, to let everyone know that they are not like the others, to make black friends. I know that I am speaking to a lot of white people who are certain they are not the problem because they are there.

Just once I want to speak to a room of white people who know they are there because they are the problem. Who know they are there to begin the work of seeing where they have been complicit and harmful so that they can start doing better. Because white supremacy is their construct, a construct they have benefited from, and deconstructing white supremacy is their duty.

This is a very compelling article and one that as a white anti-racist has messages that we need reminding off

'Clearly an end-run': Federal judge rejects Trump's health care plan to go around Obamacare

A federal judge in Washington ruled late Thursday that the Trump administration’s push to make health insurance plans available outside the Affordable Care Act that avoid the requirements of the health care law was illegal, calling the efforts “clearly an end-run around the ACA.”

The 43-page ruling, submitted by U.S. District Judge John D. Bates of the District of Columbia, blocks new rules from the Trump administration overseeing “association health plans,” which would allow small businesses to combine their forces to offer plans outside the ACA that would be both less expensive and provide fewer health protections.

“The final rule is clearly an end-run around the ACA,” Bates, an appointee of President George W. Bush, wrote in the Thursday ruling. “Indeed, as the president directed, and the secretary of labor confirmed, the final rule was designed to expand access to AHPs to avoid the most stringent requirements of the ACA.”
