About Me

I am a Brit. I am a working class child of the troubles in Belfast who now lives a life of privilege. I am an anti-racist, progressive monster for truth. If I fail in being that monster, call me out....

The Crystal Caves of Bermuda - taken this week. Stunning to visit - small but perfectly formed!

Fundamentalism Is Not About Faith

If you are a fundamentalist, you are, by definition, a zealot and a fanatic. They may not self-identify with those descriptors, but they are reactionary and extremist. Being ultra- conservative, fundamentalists of all stripes need to try and force the rest of us back to an unspecified time in the past, when inside their very confused fundamentalist brain things were ‘simpler’ and ‘purer’ than they are today in this sin ridden world of ‘sex, drugs and rock and roll’.

If we were to go back to the halcyon days of wonder and unadulterated glory one thing we would not find is many fundamentalists. They seek to take us back to a time where fundamentalism was virtually non-existent. In reality, fundamentalism is a very modern phenomenon. It is a marketing tool for religious control freaks. A simple message, simply translated. We are right. They are wrong. Our path is the only path. If you do not follow our path then you are damned. If you do follow our path immortality awaits you.
In point of fact there are not that many fundamentalists out there.

Be they Christian, Muslim or Jew, they are few in number. But they are loud. Very, very loud and they drown out the voices of the moderate and the reasoned. They infiltrate rational debate with their easy to digest factualism. Their belief in the literal, inherent and historical absolutism of religious text cannot allow for dissent, discussion, debate. It does not allow layers of understanding, it does not allow for symbolism, allegories, myths and interpretation. It lacks nuance. Fundamentalists stifle debate about the symbolism at the heart of the major faith – they have to, for us to truly understand the symbolic nature of religious texts would lead to a lessening of control over the faithful by faith leaders.

The patriarchal structures of all major faiths, where women are treated as different and unequal, as chattel and brood mares and where the LGBT community is at risk of alienation (at best) and being murdered / jailed (at worse) , by these fanatical control freaks, clearly demonstrates that this modern phenomenon of fundamentalism is not about faith but control. Control of the community, control of action and control of thought. This is the key driver in all fundamentalist communities irrespective of the core faith construct from which the 'belief' structure has grown.

Fundamentalists are control freaks – try and take away a controls freak control and things have the potential to get very nasty indeed. Yikes.

Of course, fundamentalism is not just limited to religion. Zealots of any hue are control freaks.

Judge REJECTS Trump's claim he can't be sued because he's president, giving go ahead for lawsuit....

.....against leader, Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka 'who used $3M from charity to help POTUS campaign'

A New York state judge rejected President Donald Trump's request to dismiss a lawsuit after he'd earlier claimed that under the US Constitution he can't be sued because he was the leader of the United States.

Justice Saliann Scarpulla of the state supreme court in Manhattan on Friday rebuked a motion from his lawyer Alan Futerfas that accused the state's Attorney General Barbara Underwood, a Democrat, of 'pervasive bias' for suing.

After a 21-month probe, Underwood came to the conclusion POTUS had been misusing funding of the Donald J. Trump Foundation to help his 2016 presidential campaign and his various businesses.

They are crooks. Pure and Simple...

Twitter Reports MAGA Relatives Having Second Thoughts

Twitter noted a new trend this Thanksgiving Day: MAGA relatives who are having second thoughts or maybe even outright rejecting their Trump worshipping past.

That's great, BUT...

Watch out! The media would love to kum-bay-ah these numbnuts back into the political fold. NO WAY! They don't get a pass to pretend they never knew Trump, like they did with George W. Bush. NO Tea Party rebranding. No "I'm an independent." No pretending Trump never existed and now they're going to wear coffee filters on our heads and scream about "The Democrat Party and Socialism!!!"

We'll see...

Rightwing populists weaponise culture as a way to protect privilege....

.....From Trump to Boris Johnson: how the wealthy tell us what ‘real folk’ want

But when rightwing populists focus on elites they are mostly referring to culture. Their targets are filmmakers, actors, lecturers, journalists, “globalists”, spiritualists, scientists and vegans; the Clintons, Hollywood, Londoners, New Yorkers, Silicon Valley, Sussex and Berkeley. These are the people the right claim are responsible for shaping what people can see or hear, and limiting what they can say. They pillory opinion-formers for looking down on “ordinary people” as being ignorant, bigoted and uncouth. And they are always careful to invent “ordinary people” in their own image. John Kerry’s windsurfing or Barack Obama’s taste for arugula are emphasised as evidence of their lack of connection to basic values. Laying claim to “the real America” or “commonsense values”, they evoke a mythical, homogenous people and culture, only to claim it is being besieged by cosmopolitans, multiculturalists and immigrants. Through what Sarah Igo, in The Averaged American, describes as “the strange slippage between the typical and the good, the average and the ideal”, what masquerades as an embrace of “ordinary folk” is ultimately exposed as an appeal to an ethnically pure, culturally uniform “volk”.
---------

Finally, all too often the rightwing cheerleaders for these “ordinary folk” are more embedded in the elites than those they attack can ever be. When George W Bush, who is teetotal, is the man you’d most like to have a drink with, an Old Etonian Bullingdon boy like Boris Johnson is able to get away with posing as a man of the people, and Trump can get the modern equivalent of $140m from his dad and still claim he is a self-made man, something is seriously wrong.

Or as George Clooney put it about Trump: “I grew up in Kentucky. I sold insurance door to door. I sold ladies’ shoes. I worked at an all-night liquor store. I would buy suits that were too big and too long and cut the bottom of the pants off to make ties so I’d have a tie to go on job interviews. The idea that I’m somehow the ‘Hollywood elite’ and this guy who takes a shit in a gold toilet is somehow the man of the people is laughable.”

Some pictures I took in Bermuda. Powerful I believe and I thought this group would enjoy them

Emancipation

I was visiting the National Museum of Bermuda this week and was under whelmed by the ground floor exhibits. All terribly white and British upper class (alongside the religious right wing nut jobs that have also plagued the history of America). And then I saw the stairwell. The story of Bermuda from discovery to present day. Of course I covered all that stairwell with my camera, however the most powerful images for me are those of slavery and eventual emancipation. I could have given you dozens, instead I give you these few that resonated the most with me.

I spent an hour on this stairwell.....

In 1998 I stayed with the first female black premier of Bermuda. Pam is the mother of one of my closest friends from Uni years, and every time (before this visit)I have visited Bermuda, I have stayed with 'family' and I never explored the history of the Island. This time with none of my Bermuda family on the Island I did the tourist trial. To see the history and know that Dame Pamela Gordon-Banks, in the last century, lead this nation is fucking remarkable. Emancipation indeed.
