US Military and CIA Leaders May Be Investigated for War Crimes

In what Amnesty International's Solomon Sacco called a "seminal moment for the ICC," Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda asked the court for authorization to commence an investigation that would focus on US military and CIA leaders, as well as Taliban and Afghan officials.

Bensouda wrote in a November 14, 2016, report that her preliminary examination revealed "a reasonable basis to believe" the "war crimes of torture and ill-treatment" had been committed "by US military forces deployed to Afghanistan and in secret detention facilities operated by the Central Intelligence Agency, principally in the 2003-2004 period, although allegedly continuing in some cases until 2014."

The chief prosecutor noted the alleged crimes by the CIA and US armed forces "were not the abuses of a few isolated individuals," but rather were "part of approved interrogation techniques in an attempt to extract 'actionable intelligence' from detainees." She added there was "reason to believe" that crimes were "committed in the furtherance of a policy or policies ... which would support US objectives in the conflict of Afghanistan."

Yes, we can halt the rise of the international far right

Every journalism school should show its students the video clip of the moment on Saturday when a chirpy Polish state television reporter asked a man decked out in red and white national colours what it meant to him to participate in a march celebrating Poland’s independence day. “It means,” replied the man, “to remove from power … Jewry!”

Since Poland is governed by the rightwing populist-nationalist Law and Justice party (PiS), the obvious next question is: who exactly do you have in mind as Jewry’s current representative in power? The PiS party leader, Jarosław Kaczyński? The prime minister, Beata Szydło, perhaps? Or do you mean someone who is in power elsewhere: Donald Trump or Theresa May

What we see here is something new. Whereas nationalists in the past tended to be, well, national, there is now an international network of far-right xenophobic activists. These thoroughly modern reactionaries make skilful use of social media to spread their insidious messages. A new report from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue shows that some of the most popular trending hashtags favouring the populist-nationalist Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in the German election in September – including the seemingly benign #traudichdeutschland (“Trust yourself, Germany”) – were heavily and successfully promoted by far-right activists.

Won't someone think of the poor gun owners?

First attempt @ posting picci's on DU. Some Ruinous Ruins!

From a hollowed out Mansion in a place called Easebourne. I love visiting the old and the ancient and trying to capture their mystery and beauty. Hope you enjoy the picci's.

Can we really say things have changed that much in the last century????

Not all paedophiles and sexual predators are created equal

Every. Single. Time

I was listening to the news a while back while getting ready for work, and the talking heads, while reviewing the newspapers, were discussing a new business regulation that is to come into force in 2018, wherein businesses with over 250 employees will have to publish their gender pay gap. Not a bad thing. It might encourage businesses to stop thinking they can get away with paying women less just because they do not have a penis. Although the gap has lessened in the last couple of decades it is still a whopping 19.1% for all employees (in the U.K). A recent report has suggested that it will take 200 years before the pay gap is eliminated. There is still much to do and I suppose the government has decided that naming and shaming the biggest and the supposed best might be a tool in the armour of fighting for gender equality. I do not agree with much this Tory government does. In fact, they are, generally speaking, a bunch of privileged white male elitists who live in a bubble of bullshit. But on this I think they have it right.

So back to the news. A group of chaps chatting about this new regulation. First thing out of their gobs.....

(Sic)"Well as long as this applies to men as well, it happens both ways, you know"

You, white, privileged, educated, middle class on the telly chap does not get to claim that you are somehow the victims of an anti-male wage gap.

Every. Single. Time.

Every single time a step forward is made in the fight for a minority moving towards equality, out come the false equivalency brigade. They diminish our experiences by trying to make it all about them. They are thieves. They are pilferers of our inequality. They deny systematic, paternalistic abuse over millennia to claim victim status. They are white male privilege writ large.

In the UK the gender pay gap is 19.1%

In the US the gender pay gap is 21.4%

Chaps, this is NOT about you.

14 reasons why Trumps tweets on Al Franken cannot be ignored

Donald Trump’s tweets are exhausting and many people, particularly Republican members of Congress, prefer to ignore them.

But a series of tweets by Trump on Thursday night about allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) cannot be ignored.

Franken has been accused of a very serious episode of sexual harassment and misconduct by radio commentator and former model Leeann Tweeden. Today, a short time after the news broke, Franken apologized for his behavior and said he supported an ethics investigation into the incident.

At least 14 women, on the other hand, have accused Trump of sexual assault.

The F.B.I.'s New "Black Identity Extremists" Label Exists to Justify White Nationalist Violence

The F.B.I. recently invented a new category of racial extremists in America called "Black Identity Extremists" or "B.I.E.". The idea seems to be that black people are organizing and radicalizing and that just won't do:

The 12-page report, prepared by the F.B.I. Domestic Terrorism Analysis Unit in August, and later made public by foreignpolicy.org, both announces the existence of the “Black Identity Extremist” movement and deems it a violent threat, asserting that black activists’ grievances about racialized police violence and inequities in the criminal justice system have spurred retaliatory violence against law enforcement officers. It links incidents of violence by a handful of individual citizens like Michael Johnson, who shot 11 Dallas police officers in July 2016, to “B.I.E. ideology” and predicts that “perceptions of unjust treatment of African-Americans and the perceived unchallenged illegitimate actions of law enforcement will inspire premeditated attacks against law enforcement.”
"Predicts" is another way of saying "invented from whole cloth."

That's all over now and in its place we have "Black Identity Extremists" which is another way of saying "both sides do it". Now, Fox News, AM Hate Radio and right wing hate sites can point to the made up B.I.E. "movement" to bury any and all white nationalism stories under a mountain of "whataboutism". All it will take is one or two black on white or black on blue crimes improperly shoved under the B.I.E. label and the next 50 hate crimes will be properly "balanced". Order will be restored and American white supremacy will be maintained.

Trump Judicial Nominee Brett Talley Appears to Have Defended the First KKK in Message Board Post

Brett Talley, the Alabama lawyer Donald Trump has nominated to be a federal district judge, is a 36-year-old ghosthunter who has never tried a case and who failed to disclose to the Senate that he is married to the chief of staff to the White House counsel. He also seems to have written 16,381 posts—more than 3½ per day—on the University of Alabama fan message board TideFans.com. As BuzzFeed has reported, a user who is almost certainly Talley posted for years under the handle BamainBoston. (BuzzFeed managed to identify him because BamainBoston wrote a message headlined “Washington Post Did A Feature On Me,” linking to a 2014 Ben Terris profile of Talley. BuzzFeed reported that a “Justice Department spokesman declined to comment on Talley's behalf.”)

At the time that BamainBoston wrote this post about Forrest and the KKK, Talley was clerking for Judge Joel Dubina of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. Assuming he wrote the post, which seems exceedingly likely, Talley does not seem to have a basic grasp on the history of Reconstruction, which is fundamentally intertwined with the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments’ expansion of equal rights and suffrage.

Talley has already been voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote. If confirmed, he will enjoy a lifetime appointment to interpret a Constitution whose history he does not appear to understand.
