Vatican removes Pope's remarks on psychiatric help for gay children

Francis was asked by a journalist what he would say to parents who observe homosexual traits in their children.

"I would say first of all pray, not to condemn, to dialogue, to understand, to give space to the son or the daughter," he responded, before adding that parents must also consider the age of the child.

"When it [homosexuality] shows itself from childhood, there is a lot that can be done through psychiatry, to see how things are. It is something else if it shows itself after 20 years," he said.

The Pope added that ignoring a child who showed homosexual tendencies was an "error of fatherhood or motherhood".

He did apparently order his minions to try to walk that back, but this was still appallingly stupid to get caught saying on his way home from the Ireland debacle.

Catholic LGBT group rejected by event pope will attend in Dublin

An organisation representing LGBT Catholics around the world has been denied permission for a stall at the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, which Pope Francis is attending on 25 August.

Ruby Almeida, a co-chair of the GNRC, said she was saddened and frustrated by the decision. “I think it’s the usual thing that goes on – the church publicly says it’s welcoming [to LGBT people and organisations] but pressure is brought to bear on the organisers. We wanted to be able to go and say this is who we are, let’s have a conversation.”

Another organisation, We Are Church, which campaigns for equality and inclusivity within the Catholic church, has also been denied permission for a stall in the exhibition hall.

Diarmuid Martin, the archbishop of Dublin, has said the WMF welcomes everyone, despite the replacement of five pictures of same-sex couples with traditional families in WMF leaflets in January.

So...they hate, and they lie. Same old church.

Taoiseach to discuss abuse scandal with Pope Francis

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said his first words to Pope Francis would be ones of welcome, but there are a number of issues ranging from human rights to child sex abuse that he also wants to talk about.

Mr Varadkar also said that any information requested by State authorities carrying out investigations into child abuse should be made available whether it is held in Ireland or in the Vatican.

"We want to make sure that there is truth and justice and healing for victims and that has to be part of it," he said.

Mr Varadkar said he would try to raise as many issues as possible during his brief meeting with Pope Francis at Dublin Castle on Saturday.

I wonder if he's got thoughts about the "homosexual subculture" excuse the church is throwing around?

Bishop says Catholic Church needs to acknowledge 'dark' aspects of history

But, he said, the church also needed to acknowledge the dark aspects of its history that have come to light especially in recent decades.

He pointed to a clericalism that ended up confusing power and ministry; the sexual abuse of minors by clergy and religious that did untold life-long damage to victims; the violent and repressive treatment by church representatives of young people sent to the State’s reformatory institutions; and the dark experience of vulnerable women in places meant to be residences of refuge.

He added that the cover-up, wilful or otherwise, and mismanagement that had been highlighted, had compounded the damage, adding to the church's shame.

"We know that not every bishop or priest or sister or brother or lay person engaged in church circles was bad. And we know that not everyone was good." he said.

It's curious that here's a member of the clergy managing to take a step so many mere believers throw screaming hissy fits over.

Losing Faith: Why South Carolina is abandoning its churches

South Carolina churches are shedding thousands of members a year, even as the state’s population grows by tens of thousands.

In the place we call the Bible Belt, where generations have hung their hats on their church-going nature and faithful traditions, an increasing trend of shrinking church attendance — and increasing church closings — signal a fundamental culture shift in South Carolina.

At least 97 Protestant churches across South Carolina have closed since 2011, according to data from the Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist and Southern Baptist denominations. An untold number of other closings, certainly, are not captured by these statistics.

Many churches are dying slow deaths, stuck in stagnation if not decline. And if they don’t do something, in the near future, they’ll share the fate of Cedar Creek United Methodist, a 274-year-old Richland County congregation that dissolved last year; Resurrection Lutheran, a church near downtown Columbia that will hold its last service on Sept. 2; and the dozens of churches that sit shuttered and empty around the state.

There may be hope for the South after all.

Creationist Ken Ham Blames Atheists For Ark Park Failure

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/progressivesecularhumanist/2017/06/creationist-ken-ham-blames-atheists-ark-park-failure/

Sad monkey: A bitter Ken Ham blames atheists and the secular media for the perceived financial failure of his Ark Park.

"… we are in a spiritual battle, and the intolerant secularists are so upset with such world-class attraction like the Ark (and Creation Museum) that publicly proclaim a Christian message. They will resort to whatever tactics they deem necessary to try to malign the attractions."

--------------------------------------------------------

There you have it. His failure to deliver on his promises is the result of intolerant secularists. I'm sure somebody saw that coming.

Pedro Sanchez is sworn in as Spain's new prime minister

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-44340879

Mr Sánchez, who is an atheist, took the oath to protect the constitution without a bible or crucifix - a first in Spain's modern history.

In a brief ceremony at the royal residence in Madrid on Saturday, Mr Sánchez, 46, promised to "faithfully fulfil" his duties "with conscience and honour, with loyalty to the king, and to guard and have guarded the constitution as a fundamental state rule".

Putting the fine points of Spanish politics aside, it would be nice to live in a country where an atheist can successfully--or even seriously--run for political office. Score yet another for secular Europe.

edit: DU doesn't like the cut-and-paste I did of the headline with an accented "a" in the man's name.

Two trainee priests sent back to Ireland after being found in bed together

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/religion-and-beliefs/two-trainee-priests-sent-back-to-ireland-after-being-found-in-bed-together-1.3491779

Two seminarians at the Irish College in Rome have been sent home by the rector Fr Ciáran O’Carroll after being found in bed together.

It is understood both men had been drinking earlier at an event marking the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul V1’s 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, which banned artificial means of contraception.

It is unclear whether either man will be permitted to resume studies for the priesthood. A spokesman for the Catholic bishops said it was “not appropriate to comment about individuals” when asked about the matter.

In August 2016 the Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin said he would no longer send trainee priests from the diocese to St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, because of a worrying “atmosphere” at the national seminary.

Jehovah's Witness exemption from conscription deemed prejudicial in "pivotal" ruling

https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/jehovahs_witness_exemption_from_conscription_deemed_prejudicial_in_pivotal_ruling/10089261?origin=rss

A new court ruled on Friday that the Finnish practice of allowing male Jehovah's Witnesses to avoid conscription is discriminatory.

The Helsinki Court of Appeal on Friday voted 4-3 for naming the policy discriminatory against other conscientious objectors. The ruling came in a discrimination case brought by a man who was imprisoned in 2016 for refusing conscripted service the year before.

The decision is the first court verdict that directly denounces the decades-old exception (instated in 1987), which says that men belonging to the Jehovah's Witness denomination will uniquely not be sent to prison if they refuse both military and civilian service.

The Non-Discrimination Ombudsman, Parliament's Constitutional Affairs Committee and the Defense Ministry have long held that the law contradicts the constitution's principle of equality as well as its prohibition on discrimination.
