St. Paul mayor could be a future Dem. rock star

Saw Melvin Carter III, mayor of St. Paul, Minn. on Lawrence’s show He gave me that gut feeling I’ve gotten with some who eventually became significant players in the Democratic party. He told such a great story about his father, who was an African-American community police officer, walking the beat in the neighborhood where he grew up in St. Paul. Carter made the point about how police understanding the community they are working in makes all the difference in community policing. He talked about how people would call the house when he was growing up, saying they would only surrender to be arrested by his father, who would get out of bed at midnight and go make sure the arrest was done properly. Carter’s mother was a county commissioner, so he already had politics in his blood. I just found this young man to be a very impressive person in the few minutes he spoke with Lawrence on MSNBC. He has had a few missteps as mayor, but I just got this feeling he could really be something special in our party in the future. Here’s today’s Q&A with the New Yorker. Lancaster (PA) officials say group of armed, white men infiltrated protests, instigated violence Sunday

This is in the city of Lancaster, PA, where protests were peaceful Saturday, and wound up with police pepper-spraying people on Sunday (with pix of police wrestling young, white men to the ground). More investigation is needed to determine what group these outside agitators were with.

"A small group of armed men, possibly white nationalists, infiltrated Sunday’s protests in downtown Lancaster to instigate violence during a largely peaceful demonstration, city officials said Monday. ...
"Any time officers were pelted with rocks or bottles Sunday, it came from Caucasian men in the crowd, police Chief Jarrad Berkihiser said at the news conference. ...
There were between five and 15 agitators, all white men in their late 20s and early 30s, according to Mayor Danene Sorace, who said video footage is being put into a state police system to identify the agitators...."

Killer Mike made an amazing speech In Atlanta

Rapper and activist Killer Mike made an amazing speech that’s worth listening to during the mayor’s press conference in Atlanta, asking protesters not to burn the city down. It made me think about how James Brown helped keep Boston calm, and Bobby Kennedy did the same for Indianapolis, after Martin Luther King was assassinated.

PA's turn: Protest of Gov. Wolf's coronavirus shutdown at Capitol

It's Pennsylvania's turn for dozens of yahoos to swarm together at the Capitol in state Harrisburg to protest shutdown.

Harrisburg is going to be rife with the 'Rona.
Lots of "Don't Tread on Me" flags flying. Lots of camo. NO social distancing. Don't see a lot of masks, even though they are required for all who enter stores, etc. in PA as of Sunday night. A few people are staying in their cars and driving up and down the road.
Lots of COVID-19 being spread. Good going, jerks.
Now we'll be quarantined through the fall because of your actions.
One of the groups backing the protest is a gun-rights group from OHIO.

Outstanding interview (re pandemic) with Max Brooks on "Fresh Air"

Terry Gross recorded an outstanding interview with the brilliant Max Brooks, author of novels that deal with disasters and pandemics. He has done extensive research on how we could have been prepared for the coronavirus in January had the government followed its own long-standing plan. Highly recommended. The interview aired today on NPR.[link:https://www.npr.org/2020/03/24/820601571/all-of-this-panic-could-have-been-prevented-author-max-brooks-on-covid-19|

After Trump Mocks a Sea Wall in New York, Plan Is Abruptly Shelved

Source: The New York Times

Subhead: In an unexpected move, the federal government halted a project that might have led to a multibillion-dollar barrier to protect the region from flooding.

By Anne Barnard, NY Times

The Trump administration has unexpectedly halted a project to protect the New York City region from flooding during dangerous storms like Hurricane Sandy — a decision that came six weeks after President Trump took to Twitter to ridicule the study’s most expensive proposal, a giant sea wall that could have cost billions of dollars.

The Army Corps of Engineers’ announcement that the project was “indefinitely postponed” surprised some of its own officials, and local politicians and advocates said the decision was stunning at a time when climate change is threatening New York’s future with intensifying storms.

In a statement, the Corps’ New York office said only that the study was suspended because it did not receive funding in the agency’s work plan for 2020. Officials there refused to comment on whether they believed that Mr. Trump had influenced the decision. But a senior administration official said the project was shelved because it was too expensive and unfocused.

Trump and his minions are again playing with people's lives because of his own pettiness. (forgive me if this was already posted; I did a search and didn't find it).

Dana Milbank calls Matt Gaetz's attack on Hunter Biden "grotesque"

In WaPo, Dana Milbank calls Matt Gaetz "the most vulgar" legislator he's encountered in Washington. This is after Gaetz, who was arrested for DUI, attacked Hunter Biden for his (admitted) struggle with substance abuse.

"... Forget politics for a moment. Forget about impeachment. As a parent, as a person, I wonder: Where is Matt Gaetz’s humanity? ... There are good people on both sides of the aisle, but in the quarter-century I’ve covered Washington, Gaetz is among the most vulgar I have ever encountered. He invited a Holocaust denier to be his State of the Union guest. He led the Republicans’ storming of a secure hearing room, endangering government secrets. And now this. ... Exploiting this man’s addiction shows only that Gaetz has lost his soul."
