Minneapolis protest misinformation stokes racial tensions

Minneapolis protest misinformation stokes racial tensions

The false social media posts started just hours after protesters first began chanting and carrying banners around the Minneapolis neighborhood where George Floyd, an African American man, died handcuffed in police custody.

"A good deal of this, if not all of this, is intentionally trying to stoke the racial flame that has been ablaze in the United States almost since slavery started 400-plus years ago," said Lanier Holt, a communications professor at Ohio State University who studied in Minneapolis.

While the falsehoods may have been unwittingly amplified by some, they have likely been planted by those preying on existing racial tensions, Holt said.

"They put out that false information to get that narrative in the minds of people who already have these ... pre-existing biases," he said. The online misinformation so far appears to have fallen along those racial divides.

Article goes on to provide several example of misleading posts and outright lies from both public and social media.

Little doubt exists that Russia and far right-wing groups are behind much of this evil activity. They have an abundant supply of racists in America to prey on that will amplify their message with glee.

Landlords lining up to evict hundreds of Tampa Bay tenants once moratorium expires

Landlords lining up to evict hundreds of Tampa Bay tenants once moratorium expires
Hundreds of evictions have been filed in Florida courts but even attorneys are unsure how to navigate a confusing and legally untested patchwork of local, state and federal protections for renters during the pandemic.

In the seven weeks since Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order to protect people from losing their homes during the coronavirus pandemic, hundreds of eviction cases have stacked up in Florida courts, waiting for the order to lapse. They include more than 250 in Hillsborough County alone....
+++
DeSantis recently extended the stay on evictions until June 2, but even attorneys are unclear what will happen next.

The rush to protect tenants from homelessness has resulted in a confusing patchwork of local, state and federal protections, most of which have little or no legal precedent.
++++
Muddying the waters further is the federal CARES Act, which prohibits evictions in residential properties that receive government subsidies, such as Section 8, or that have federally backed mortgages — that is, mortgages owned or secured by government entities such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The CARES Act’s eviction suspension expires July 25.

The article goes on to review various conflicts that may play out between landlords, tenants and federal/state/local authorities including in the courts. I assume this dilemma in Florida is similar to other states and will repeat many times in coming months.

There will be untold misery among people evicted and a jump in homelessness across the nation.

Intense fitness classes can lead to rapid spread of COVID-19, report shows

Intense fitness classes can lead to rapid spread of COVID-19, report shows
By Rachael Rettner - Senior Writer

Read it here: https://www.livescience.com/covid-19-fitness-dance-classes-south-korea.html

(snips)
The researchers noted that the classes involved many people engaging in high-intensity exercise in a small space — a pretty ideal environment for COVID-19 spread.

"The moist, warm atmosphere in a sports facility coupled with turbulent air flow generated by intense physical exercise can cause more dense transmission of isolated droplets," the authors said. The number of people in a class also appeared to play a role in disease spread: Typical-size classes, with up to 22 participants, resulted in disease spread, while small classes with fewer than five people did not result in any spread of COVID-19, the report found.

Interestingly, one of the infected instructors also taught yoga and pilates, but none of these students became infected. The authors hypothesized that the lower intensity of these activities did not result in the same level of transmission as the high-intensity fitness classes.

Overall, "because of the increased possibility of infection through droplets, vigorous exercise in closely confined spaces should be avoided during the current outbreak," the authors concluded.

Fitness gyms opening around the nation is bound to result in many new infections. Fortunately, most gyms in my area (north central KY) show "temporarily closed" on Google maps, although at least one chain outfit shows open.

Central U.S. weather satellite pix looks like a kid's action figure.

Reminds me of some of my son's action figure toys from the 90s. So which is it - Incredible Hulk or a Transformer?

It looks like Houston, TX ripped off half his right leg......

Here in north central KY, we're having so much rain I'm never getting my potted plants in the ground.....

Bird Song Hero: The song learning game for everyone

Bird Song Hero site: https://academy.allaboutbirds.org/bird-song-hero/

From Cornell University's Bird Academy: https://academy.allaboutbirds.org/

Bird Academy and the Cornell Lab

Bird Academy provides online courses and access to live events from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Our mission is to serve birders, nature enthusiasts, and budding ornithologists by helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to feed their passion.

Founded in 1915, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a world leader in the study, appreciation, and conservation of birds. Soon after founding the Lab, Arthur “Doc” Allen opened its doors to the public on Monday evenings for seminars created to celebrate the science and beauty of birds.

Bird Academy continues this century-old tradition of sharing the wonder and joy of birds far beyond our walls by creating online courses, providing public access to Monday Night Seminars online, and offering course access to those who need financial assistance through our scholarship program. The Cornell Lab is a nonprofit organization supported by donations and membership.

I'm not an extremely avid birder, I just love watching them each day. They bring me peace. I enjoy the mourning dove's calls, the robin's early morning song, my chickadees fussing at me and an occasional owl's late night call.

As a retired tech person, I found the time domain readouts of each bird's call interesting although I remember the song IDs better from just repetitive listening and sightings.

Enjoying this series of short birding videos.

This series of videos on birds is produced by a lady in Newfoundland. They are exceptionally well done as well as informative.

Her name is Lesley (LesleytheBirdNerd) and the site has videos on several species but she focuses mostly on Chickadees and Blue Jays.

Check out these which I felt were particularly interesting (Chickadees are among my favorite birds):
