Louisiana church does it again - this time with 500 people.

We manage to achieve international fame each day. From today, reported on Guardian UK's rolling coronavirus page:

See: https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/mar/29/coronavirus-live-news-trump-proposes-quarantine-of-new-york-and-other-hotspots

Hundreds of worshippers attended services at a Louisiana church on Sunday, flouting a ban on large gatherings, angering neighbours and seemingly turning a deaf ear to their governor, who once again warned that hospitals could soon be overwhelmed with new cases of the coronavirus, AP reports.

An estimated 500 people of all ages filed inside the mustard-yellow and beige Life Tabernacle church in Central, a city of nearly 29,000 outside Baton Rouge.

Assistant ministers and worshippers who stood outside the front doors and in the parking lot of Life Tabernacle told news reporters to leave, saying cameras would not be allowed on the property and they had been told not to talk to the news media.

A Louisiana church hosted more than 1,800 people at its Sunday morning service.

WVLA in Baton Rouge says that 26 buses were used to pick people up from around the Baton Rouge area to take them to church.
++++
The church's pastor Tony Spell went against state and federal guidelines for social distancing to hold the service. Spell tells WLVA that the Life Tabernacle Church in Central believes in the healing hand of Jesus, even through an aggressive global pandemic.

Throughout the service, parishioners were seen touching each other and closely gathering, very few wearing masks or gloves.

Spell says if anyone in his congregation is infected with the virus, he will heal them through God. "I'm going to address that by laying hands on them and praying for them and depending on God to heal their body," Spell said.

Just as with the megachurch in South Korea, this congregation will be directly responsible for countless hospitalizations and deaths.

No. Not proven fit for purpose.

We should not be suggesting or recommending any material or product for other people's protection against contracting a potentially fatal disease unless it has been approved and tested under the Federal code linked here:

42 CFR Part 84 Respiratory Protective Devices: https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/retrieveECFR?gp=&SID=c9c15fd462ffe5c4f4e85b73f161b2e0&r=PART&n=42y1.0.1.7.67#se42.1.84_11143

Filtration materials are carefully selected and tested under the worse case conditions of use for each application, including particulate or gas capture rate and breathing air flow rate, and production of assembled devices is carefully controlled and monitored. Pleated or flat HEPA filter material for furnaces and air purifiers is tested only for their specific intended use.

Of course, we are free to use anything we like for our own personal protection. Just please be aware that you may be creating a false sense of security for yourself and others around you by using anything not scientifically proven fit for purpose by a certified testing lab.

This thread proves how susceptible Americans are to fear and spin.

First, this should be considered a rumor and nothing more. Statements like this can endanger front-line medical personnel.

Second, it's probably the worst idea I've heard being tossed about at this stage of the outbreak for a number of reasons (most having to do with American culture). If you think masks are hard to come by now...think toilet paper. Where the hell will our medical personnel get masks if every asshole in America hoards a few hundred in their garage (and they will)?

Third, there's little scientific evidence that wearing masks substantially reduces everyday citizen's risks for this novel virus vs careful sanitation, isolation and safe distancing. The problem is that any measure we take can create a false sense of security and most people then become far more careless with the other components of protection.

Fourth, it is known that the virus can be spread in air both by droplets (of a wide variety of size) and by aerosolization which is extremely dangerous in public places and masks available to the public will not stop it (virus particles are sub-micron). In addition, very few public places have HEPA-rated air filtration in their HVAC systems.

Fifth, few Americans are trained on the proper use and handling of particulate masks and are unaware their design is for short term use, typically being disposed of after one work shift or less. Handling of them reduces effectiveness.

My strong suspicion is that Trump's greed-driven people are about to pump this as a magic solution to enable millions of people to go back to work. The net result is that thousand more will die.

I'm expressing these opinions relative to the American public as a whole, including the rich and the poor and the smart and not-so-smart from all regions.

Just My Humble Opinion........

Inside the race to develop a coronavirus vaccine

'It’s a razor’s edge we’re walking': inside the race to develop a coronavirus vaccine

Around the world, more than 40 teams are working on a vaccine for Covid-19. We followed one doctor in the most urgent quest of his life.

Excerpt:

Defeating Covid-19 will call for more than vaccines; it will involve quarantines, social distancing, antivirals and other drugs, and healthcare for the sick. But the idea of a vaccine – the quintessential silver bullet – has come to bear an almost unreasonable allure. The coronavirus arrived at a ripe moment in genetic technology, when the advances of the past half-decade have made it possible for vaccine projects to explode off the blocks as soon as a virus is sequenced. These cutting-edge vaccines don’t use weakened forms of the germ to build our immunity, as all vaccines once did; rather, they contain short copies of parts of the germ’s genetic code – its DNA or RNA – which can produce fragments of the germ within our bodies.

Thus, for the first time ever, scientists have been able to muster up vaccine prospects mere weeks into a new, fast-spreading disease. Right now, there are at least 43 Covid-19 vaccines in development around the world – in Brisbane and Hong Kong, in the US and the UK, in the labs of universities and companies. Most of these are DNA or RNA vaccines. One vaccine, made in 63 days by an American biotech firm named Moderna, moved into human trials on 16 March, entering the bloodstream of the first of 45 healthy adult volunteers in Seattle. It was a “world indoor record”, said Anthony Fauci, the doctor who heads the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “Nothing has ever gone that fast.”

and...
The overriding purpose of the process is abundant caution; a vaccine that unexpectedly proves harmful is the industry’s worst nightmare. In the literature, past mishaps flash like red warning signals. In 1942, a yellow fever vaccine contaminated with a hepatitis B virus was given to more than 300,000 American troops; nearly 150 of them died. The field’s classic reference text, Plotkin’s Vaccines, by the physician Stanley Plotkin, refers sombrely to “the Cutter incident” – a 1955 episode in which a manufacturer named Cutter Laboratories failed to properly deactivate the virus in its polio shot. The faulty vaccine caused roughly 40,000 cases of polio, paralysed 260 people and killed 10.

The US’s strict rules to regulate vaccines emerged, in part, because of Cutter Laboratories. The company survived, but paid out millions in civil damages. The Cutter incident set a precedent for more lawsuits during the next three decades, in which parents argued that their children had been disabled by malfunctioning vaccines. Some pharma firms, worried about multimillion-dollar claims settlements, abandoned vaccines altogether; others hiked their prices to cover any future legal costs. To keep vaccines cheap and vaccinations regular, the US government had to set up a compensation fund that eased most of the liability on vaccine companies.

The article is a long read but provides both an interesting review of vaccine history and of COVID-19's evolution into the scientific community as a challenge for the best and brightest.

All carriers will be considered crucial businesses because....

so many truly crucial services depend on cell and landline services such as police, fire, medical personnel, critical service companies, etc.

Phone carriers are also internet carriers without which we would be dead in the water......

Not likely to happen in America and could be dangerous.

Probably substantially effective only in very crowded city areas where some people go barefoot or wear sandals, or where people handle and remove their shoes prior to entering buildings.

With almost everyone sheltering indoors, there's no need.

There's also the issue of environmental effects of vast amounts of disinfectants going into our groundwater or sewers.

That all said, it is worthy of mention to say virus particles could in theory stay viable for a couple of days on outdoor surfaces under ideal conditions.
