Alive is good.

Alive and living through a crushing defeat is good.
Alive and forced to deal with multiple investigations and indictments is good.
Alive and forced to spend what money is left (because he’s burned Duetche Bank and lost his usefulness to Putin) is good.
Alive and on TV daily, but now broken and forced to sit behind the defendant’s table, with no adoring crowds or adulation.
Alive and sitting in jail is good.

Why our minds can't make sense of COVID-19's enormous death toll

When the COVID-19 pandemic started nine months ago, the current reported death tolls were unthinkable. Yet this week, the fatality count will reach 200,000 people in the United States, and global deaths are approaching one million.
Although health officials say the real toll is likely much higher, due to a percentage of coronavirus deaths not being officially classified, the 200,000 statistic is a heartbreaking milestone. It’s a symbolic grim number that’s seared into the public’s consciousness and marks another alarming level of escalation in the pandemic.
The tally means a U.S. death has happened every 1.5 minutes, on average, since the first official fatality in late February. It’s also the equivalent of wiping out a small city—such as Salt Lake City, Utah or Akron, Ohio—or a quarter of Washington D.C. It means we have lost 1,450 plane loads full of people. (Here's where cases are growing and declining in the U.S.)

Anyone have a salmon recipe they love?

I just grill it and I’d like to try something different tonight!

ISO good bean recipes ...

... trying to eat meat rarely but it’s tough during the pandemic. I’m trying to stockpile for when things get worse in the fall and cook for fun with my kids. And I have a picky eater that refuses 98% of all veggies and healthy foods. 🙄 I was vegetarian before the plague but it seemed silly to make two meals each night and wasteful to do so. Anyway, I frequently just eat the sides and let them at the meat but I need more protein sides.

So talk to me about beans. I love Lima beans and chickpeas, split peas are ok and red kidney beans are a favorite too. What are some recipes you guys love?

Cooking show on Netflix I found/love

Nadiya Hussain's Time to Eat is focused on shortcuts for moms but has some interesting desserts, breakfasts and flavor combinations.

Trout!

Costco had gorgeous packages of clear-eyed trout this week so I bought some. I had never scaled and cooked whole fish before.

I planned to grill it but it was too rainy so I just baked it with some lemon and this great blueberry/lemon salt. It was really good. We will definitely have it again but the family said I have to cut off the Heads next time. 🤣

Is anyone else terrified listening to this...

... expert on Rachel? She’s really painting a scary picture of the coming months and the spread of Covid. Much of the future spread across the US will likely be because we do not have a national strategy (Go to Florida where it’s “open” and come home to NYC and infect the dude at the bodega), and because the CDCis being stifled.

Proud liberal mama...

I just had to post. My college freshman just headed out with friends (complete with BLM sign and mask) to protest.

Might not be a big deal for every family but my great grandpa was a white knight something in the Joplin KKK. My dad used to go to picnics in their cave outside of town and as a teen helped the local grocer package up baskets of fruits to take to local widows and poor whites that the KKK paid for.

I grew up with a racist parent and rejected it although I have to fight the crap that was beaten into my head.

She is different. Her generation is really going to change the world.
