Protester who threatened city council facing 18 felony counts

Source: KGET-TV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A pro-Palestinian protester arrested after telling the Bakersfield City Council, “We’ll see you at your house, we’ll murder you,” has been charged with 18 felony counts.

Riddhi Patel, 28, is charged with eight counts of threatening a public official and 10 counts of making terroristic threats, according to court records. Held on $1 million bail, she’s due in court at 3 p.m.

Patel made the threat, which was captured on video, during the public comment section of Wednesday’s city council meeting.

She first railed against council members for not passing a resolution condemning Israel’s actions in its war against Hamas. Later, she harangued them for the recently implemented security measures, saying they were put in place to retaliate against protesters.

Big donation to Rudy Giuliani defense fund is target of lawsuit alleging fraud by donor

Source: CNBC

One of the largest donations to Rudy Giuliani's legal defense fund is at the center of a new lawsuit that argues the $100,000 contribution rightfully belongs to victims of an alleged online fraud scheme.

The donation by Matthew Martorano in September accounted for nearly 13% of all the money that Giuliani, the former attorney for Donald Trump and onetime New York City mayor, raised in the fund.

The fund was intended to help Giuliani pay for lawyers in the Georgia election interference case — where Trump is a co-defendant — and in a civil defamation case that Giuliani lost, brought by two Georgia election workers.

But the plaintiff in the new civil suit — filed after CNBC reported on Martorano's donation earlier this year — claims that $100,000 flowed from Martorano's participation in an alleged online skin care product scam. They are seeking "to unwind" the donation to Giuliani.

Multiple people were injured after gunfire broke out at a celebration to mark the end of Ramadan in Philadelphia, police said.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in the Parkside neighborhood at an Eid al-Fitr event that was attended by approximately 1,000 people, police said. The holiday marks the end of Ramadan, Islam's holy month of fasting.

Two "factions" pulled out guns and started shooting at each other at the outdoor gathering, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. About 30 shots were fired, he said.

A 22-year-old was shot in the stomach during the gunfire and a juvenile self-transported to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand, Bethel said. Both are in stable condition, he said.

Trump supporters trying to recall Wisconsin GOP leader failed, elections review concludes

Source: Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The effort by supporters of former President Donald Trump to recall Wisconsin’s top elected Republican did not gather enough signatures to trigger the recall election and therefore should be rejected, state elections officials said Wednesday.

Trump backers angry with Assembly Speaker Robin Vos launched the recall effort, citing his refusal to decertify President Joe Biden’s narrow win in the state in 2020. Vos further angered Trump supporters when he did not back a plan to impeach Meagan Wolfe, the state’s top elections official.

Trump also renewed his criticism of Vos and Wolfe this week.

Vos dismissed petition organizers as “whack jobs and morons” and said previously that the effort had failed after challenging the validity of thousands of signatures.

Florida Rapper Wants to Unseat Democrat, Warns It Could Get 'Nasty'

Source: Newsweek

Luther Campbell, the Miami-based rapper, known as Uncle Luke, said he is mulling a challenge to Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

Campbell—known for his work in the musical group 2 Live Crew, whose album As Nasty as They Wanna Be became the first album to be ruled obscene in federal court—revealed his interest in running for Congress in a new interview with news outlet The Bulwark published on Friday.

He told the publication he will make a formal decision about whether he will run by Florida's April 26 qualifying deadline and that he believes he has "the opportunity to bring something back to the community."

"And I get to fight these mother*******," Campbell, 63, told the publication, adding that he was referring to "Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, and all these crazy-a** Republicans who want to divide us."

Trump posts $91 million bond and files notice to appeal in E. Jean Carroll case

Source: NBC News

By Adam Reiss, Lisa Rubin and Dareh Gregorian
Attorneys for former President Donald Trump filed official notice Friday they're appealing the $83 million defamation verdict awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll — and that they've posted the $91 million bond needed to keep her from collecting while the appeal plays out.

The lawyers asked the judge in a court filing for an order approving the $91,630,000 bond and staying execution of Carroll's judgment.

The terms of the bond — and how much money or collateral Trump put down — are unclear. The source of the bond is the Federal Insurance Company, a corporation authorized to transact business in New York. They are based in Chesapeake, Virginia and New Jersey and the company appears to be a subsidiary of Chubb Insurance Company. The document is signed by the former president.

The filing came as a surprise because Trump's lawyers have repeatedly asked the judge for more time to post the bond and to reduce the amount. The bond was needed to prevent Carroll from moving to collect on the judgment during the pendency of the appeal, which could take months or even years. It's greater than the amount of the actual verdict to account for New York's 9% annual interest rate.

Huffington Post: Biden's Use Of 'Illegal' To Describe Migrants Raises Red Flags For Democrats

President Joe Biden, briefly responding from the podium to jeering from Republicans during his State of the Union speech called a migrant “an illegal,” prompting criticism from his party’s progressive wing.

“No human being is illegal,” said Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) in a social media post soon afterwards.

In the section of his speech Thursday dealing with immigration policy and the recent failure of a bipartisan bill aiming to secure the border, Biden’s criticism of Republicans for killing the bill drew sharp jeers and boos from the GOP side of the chamber.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) shouted, “It’s about Laken Riley!” loudly enough to be heard throughout the chamber — including, apparently, from the podium.

Jewish Democrats wrongly listed as backers of pro-Palestinian bill

A pair of Jewish House Democrats said Wednesday they were incorrectly listed as co-sponsors of a pro-Palestinian resolution.

Why it matters: One of the lawmakers, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), said he plans to investigate the discrepancy and try to "prevent this from happening to anyone else."

The mixup comes as the bloody Israel-Hamas war has deeply divided Democrats in Congress.
The details: The non-binding resolution, H.Res.902, "affirms Palestine's right to exist and at a future time to become a nation State."

Hochul deploys National Guard for subway bag checks amid rising crime numbers

Source: CBS News

NEW YORK -- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new subway safety plan Wednesday, following several violent incidents underground in the past week and rising subway crime numbers so far this year.

"Anyone looking to do harm or spread fear on our subways, you will be caught, plain and simple. There will be consequences. This has to end. New Yorkers deserve no less," Hochul said. "To those who are feeling anxious whenever they walk through those turnstiles, we will stop at nothing to keep you safe, you and your family members, and restore your peace of mind."

The governor laid out a five-point approach that includes:

Adding 750 National Guard members and 250 MTA and State Police officers to help with random bag searches

Working to change the law to stop people who commit violent transit crimes from riding subways and buses
