City Council To Force NYPD To Account For The Millions They Seize From Innocent NYers

Every year the NYPD seizes millions of dollars in assets from innocent New Yorkers, who often have to fight a dizzying bureaucracy to get their property back. But today the City Council is poised to pass legislation that would make the practice vastly more transparent.

The bill, which is expected to pass this afternoon, will require the NYPD to release annual reports on how much they seize from New Yorkers during stops and arrests and through the use of civil forfeiture, and account for what happens to the assets after they’re in custody.

"This first-of-its-kind transparency bill will shed light on the reasons why the NYPD has seized someone's property, whether revenue is generated from property seizure, and if an individual has been able to get their property back," said Bronx Councilman Ritchie Torres, the bill's primary sponsor. "The legislation will help ensure that the civil forfeiture process is used legitimately.”

(Update: The bill passed 46-0, with five members absent, according to Torres' office.)

Lookups spiked on reports that Anthony Scaramucci was offered the position of White House communications director

Lookups for scaramouch spiked on July 21, 2017, after it was reported that President Trump offered the position of White House communications director to a man named Anthony Scaramucci. Press Secretary Sean Spicer resigned because he did not agree with the president’s choice.

Scaramouch (also sometimes spelled scaramouche) is the name of a stock character in the largely improvised Italian commedia dell’arte, a theatrical comic entertainment most popular from the 1500s to the 1800s. The characters often wore masks and improvised scenes based on well-known routines and situations. Scaramouch is defined in the dictionary as follows:

: a stock character in the Italian commedia dell'arte that burlesques the Spanish don and is characterized by boastfulness and cowardliness

Another of the stock characters was harlequin. Harlequin was portrayed as a gentleman’s valet and Scaramouch was an unscrupulous servant, and the stage routines often involved Harlequin beating Scaramouch with a wooden sword. These fights may explain the name of Scaramouch itself: it comes from the Italian word scaramuccia, meaning “to skirmish.”

Texas actress gets 18 years for mailing ricin to Obama

A minor actress from Texas was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in prison for sending ricin-tainted letters to President Obama, former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and the head of his gun-control group.

Shannon Guess Richardson, 36, was also ordered to pay $367,000 restitution as part of a plea bargain for pleading guilty in December to one count of developing, producing, possessing and transferring a biological agent for use as a weapon. She bought the materials — castor bean seeds and lye — online.

The FBI arrested her in June 2013 after she was indicted by a federal grand jury. She gave birth the next month while in jail.

Richardson mailed three letters in May 2013 from her home in New Boston, near Texarkana, and then drove to a Shreveport, La., police station to implicate her estranged husband, who had filed for divorce. She told the FBI she did not think the letters would be opened because of security measures.

Mueller asks WH staff to preserve all documents relating to June 2016 meeting

(CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller has asked the White House to preserve all documents relating to the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower that Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort had with a Russian lawyer and others, according to a source who has seen the letter.

Mueller sent a notice, called a document preservation request, asking White House staff to save "any subjects discussed in the course of the June 2016 meeting" and also "any decisions made regarding the recent disclosures about the June 2016 meeting," according to the source, who read portions of the letter to CNN.
The letter from Mueller began: "As you are aware the Special Counsel's office is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, including any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of Donald Trump. Information concerning the June 2016 meeting between Donald J Trump Jr and Natalia Veselnitskaya is relevant to the investigation."
