How a Tax Cut Turns Into a Tax Increase

House Republicans today put forward a plan to fundamentally revamp the tax code and provide large tax breaks to the highest income Americans through rate cuts on business income and repeal of the estate tax. However, House Republicans have also claimed that the plan provides significant tax breaks to middle-income families. It turns out, though, that those tax breaks for the middle are small as compared to whatís offered to the top, and disappearing.

In rolling out their plan, House Republicans focused on an example family ó a married couple making $59,000 per year and with two kids. They said that family would get a tax cut of over $1,182 in 2018 (compared to what they paid in 2017). But, what they didnít say is that a family making $59,000 would face a tax increase by 2024 relative to current law, with the tax increase potentially rising to $500 by 2027. This is even as tax cuts for those at the top are maintained.

The figure below shows the tax change under the House plan by year relative to current law. It starts with a tax cut of $1,106 in 2018. (This is a bit less than the figure advertised by the House Republicans since this compares apples to apples: their 2018 plan as compared to 2018 current law, as opposed to comparing the plan in 2018 to 2017 liability like the House Republicans did.) But, that tax cut dissipates over time and finally reverses.

guess who owns over 100 Papa Johns Restaurants

Is this the pizza phase of Jerry Jonesí plan?

There are rumblings that the Cowboys owner is behind the CEO of Papa Johnís calling out NFL leadership Wednesday, when John Schnatter blamed declining Papa Johnís stock on the NFLís national anthem protests.

Pro Football Talk, in a juicy (saucy?) story, reported the whispers in league circles about whether Jones had put Schnatter up to the Roger Goodell hit job during the companyís third-quarter earnings conference call.

Papa Johnís has been the official pizza sponsor of the NFL since 2010 and has strong ties to the Cowboys, having been the official pizza sponsor of the team since 2004. Jones owns more than 100 Papa Johnís franchises in Texas, according to D Magazine, and has appeared in a truly awful rap commercial for the chain.

Senators troll Facebook with fake ad campaign

Showing they plan to continue playing hardball with Big Tech, Democratic Senators Mark Warner (Va.) and Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) created a Facebook page for a fictional political group ó Americans for Disclosure Solutions (ADS) ó then paid to target the newsfeeds of thousands of journalists and Hill staffers.

Why it matters: A Warner aide tells me the senator was surprised that "there was literally no mechanism on [Facebook] for us to [prove] we were who we said we were," adding, "it was really easy for Russian operatives to use the same micro-targeting tools as they attempted to meddle in last fall's presidential election ... [Y]ou can see why this would be so appealing to the Russians."

How they did it: Warner and Klobuchar ó who have introduced a bill, backed by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), to require more disclosure about online politics ads ó created a "Political Organization" page on Facebook for the fictional group.

"Using campaign funds in accordance with Senate ethics rules," according to aides, they "launched a small, 24-hour ad buy on Facebook targeting Washington, D.C. journalists and Capitol Hill staffers."
"For just $20, ... Warner and Klobuchar reached 1,369 self-identified Hill staffers in under 24 hours."
"For just $20, Warner and Klobuchar reached 1,407 Washington, D.C.-based journalists."

GOP tax bill would allow churches to endorse political candidates

The House Republican tax bill released Thursday would allow churches to endorse political candidates, rolling back a 1950s-era law that bars such activities.

The proposed change is listed at the end of the 429-page legislation.

It states that churches should not lose their tax-exempt status based on statements about political candidates made during the course of religious services.

The change to what is known as the Johnson Amendment has long been a priority of leaders on the religious right. They say the policy violates the First Amendment.
