Meet the congresswoman poised to tear up Obama's education legacy

This is a dated (4 year old) article, but I think people need to be aware that we need to be worried about more than Trump. Virginia Foxx is 76 now, and I kept hoping she would retire. But, no...she has plans if reelected.

"Foxx reels off a list of possible targets: The billions doled out annually under Title 1 — a Great Society program that boosts funding to schools serving poor students. The money is now considered a possible funding source for Trump’s school choice plan to allow low-income students to select private or charter schools."

I wonder if Trump's kids know

how much they are going to lose socially?

Ivanka, Eric and Don Jr. seemed like they had a vibrant social life in NY. I don't see that coming back; I think they will suffer social shunning, and probably are already. They have been pandering to trashy people publicly, and that will follow them.

The Trump name is already "mud" around the world, will there be enough wealthy people to sustain their properties? Even if one of the hotels were in an exact location we wanted to visit on vacation, I personally would not want to stay there. I would rather stay in a youth hostel with a bunk bed than attempt to sleep in a property branded with that name.

I know the two boys aren't smart-- but, Ivanka seems to be the smartest one of that group. She understand "branding." Personally, I think Tiffany is trying to distance herself already.

Why aren't they trying to distance themselves now? More than likely, it's already too late. Is it possible that they are surrounded by sycophants so tightly that they cannot see their own future, and self interests?

OK, what was the name

of that stupid Republican website that was so popular years ago?

Someone that DUers used to call "Rimjob" or something like that ran it.

What in the world are these Trump people so mad about all the time?

We live in NC.

I am sure everyone has seen the photos of those armed rednecks in Raleigh; and read about the KKK-like armed group led by a law enforcement officer to an African American household. (I write KKK-like because their robes hadn't been dry cleaned, or something. Anyway, they weren't wearing them)

What are these folks so angry about? Why do they hate liberals? We have been voting in their best interests for decades.

I know: racism (I am a Southerner, I get that), the NRA, and FOX news....but, there has to be something deeper going on here.

What is making these guys feel so disenfranchised?

Why is Trump always so mad? Every time you see him, he is pounding the podium, angry, yelling in that weird lisp, the anger tweets--- If I had inherited his wealth, at his age, I would be sitting in my condo thinking about my next museum tour of the world.

What is wrong with them?

So, Joe Biden just posted this on Facebook....anyone want to make guesses?

"My promise to you is this: If I'm elected president, my cabinet and my administration will reflect the diversity that makes our country strong. You have my word as a Biden. And that starts with a running mate who will make history as the first woman to serve as Vice President. I’m not ready to share big news yet, but I want to let you know as soon as I am. If you add your name before midnight tonight, I’ll see to it that you’ll hear about my VP pick first:"

OK, time for a light hearted thread! Let's play...."What can Republicans not claim anymore?"

I'll go first with a few ideas:

Family values...seriously-- gave that one up with a thrice married man who paid off a porn star!

Boot Straps! "Where's my stimulus check??"

Religion -- what denomination is the orange clown anyway? Has anyone actually ever seen him in a regular church service?

Does anyone here remember those cool little "health food" stores in the seventies?

The ones that had homemade things like soap, and lotion....sold vegan sandwiches....and bulk food such as split peas, flour, nutritional yeast, etc?

You would walk in, and the gentle, light smell of sandlewood and patchouli would greet you as you entered?

IF you could....would you shop in one again? This is a serious question, btw--- I am thinking of opening one.

Sheetz- up to 2 weeks *extra* paid time off if exposed to COVID-19

Most do suck (oh you can take unpaid leave!) but not Sheetz. Why can't all big companies do this? The are not at all perfect but check this out:

A letter to our customers:

For nearly 70 years, our family has committed to providing a Total Customer Focus (TCF) in everything we do. During this challenging time, that commitment will not change. While the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and rapidly changing environment surrounding it have produced a lot of fear and anxiety, I want to assure you that Sheetz is prioritizing the health and well-being of our team members, customers and communities above all else.

We’ve taken several steps over the last week to remain vigilant, including establishing an advisory board of senior leaders and experts in the field of sanitation and food safety. This group is regularly communicating with our stores and evaluating the impact of COVID-19 in every community where we operate. They are also working closely with local health and government officials as well as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In addition, Sheetz has established a number of preventive measures, in accordance with CDC recommendations, for both our employees and customers.

In addition to continuing with our routine cleaning procedures, we have added hours to our daily schedule dedicated to cleaning and sanitizing our stores. This effort is focused on high touch surface areas such as gas pumps, touch-screen order points, counter tops, door handles, cash registers, credit machines and ATMs.

As you well know, our team members are the heart and soul of this company. Their safety and well-being is of top priority to us, and of particular concern. To help prevent spread of the virus, we have reinforced proper hand washing and hygiene and are actively requesting employees stay home if they are sick. Team members are evaluated by management before the start of their shift. All of our employees receive paid time off, but we are providing up to an additional 2 weeks paid time to any employee who contracts the virus or is subject to quarantine due to exposure. For employees with pre-existing health conditions or compromised immune systems who are particularly vulnerable to the virus, they are eligible for leave without fear of losing their jobs. All of these measures are meant to help provide a safe environment for our Sheetz team members and customers.

Respect is at the core of Sheetz DNA and it is that respect for our ecosystem of employees, customers and communities that is driving our efforts during this difficult time. As you well know, Sheetz team members weather some pretty big storms, but these are unchartered waters for all of us. While we are driven to remain open and available to you, we will not jeopardize anyone’s health or safety in that effort and must follow the direction of local, state and federal health agencies and officials. As a last resort, some stores could close. At a minimum, you may experience staffing shortfalls, so we thank you for your support of our team members as they work tirelessly to continue to provide the TCF you are accustomed to at Sheetz.

Should you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to call our customer care line at 1(800) 487-5444. On behalf of the entire Sheetz family, I wish you and your family well as we all work through this challenging situation. Our hearts go out to anyone in your community affected by the virus. Thank you for being a loyal customer and we look forward to seeing you soon.

"What is Vietnam?"

I am a middle school librarian.

My student demographic reflects the city I live in. Some very wealthy, mostly middle class, some in section 8 housing.

Last week, I was working with a small group of kids on technology--- four students. Again, these four were in the different demographic range as reflected by our city. We were just having fun, exploring some new chrome books, and discussing how they could use this technology in the media center for their classroom projects.

I was not paying attention to the banter, and was demonstrating a chrome app, when one of the kids said, "My Dad went to Vietnam and has issues." OK, Now I am listening. These students are not anywhere near old enough to have a parent that served in Vietnam. Maybe grandparents....if that. I might have heard him wrong- he might have said, "My GRAND Dad..."

What floored me was the response from the other three: "What IS Vietnam? I have heard of it......"
