Bill Clinton spoke socially with Attorney General Loretta Lynch for awhile yesterday morning after he realized they both happened to be at the same airport at the same time, and republican leaders immediately tried to spin it as being evidence of some kind of phony larger controversy in which Hillary Clinton is about to be “indicted” on one imaginary charge or another. Cable news immediately bit on the topic, but then almost as quickly moved on once it realized no one in the mainstream cared. And yet a day and a half later, some Hillary Clinton supporters are still debating what the whole thing meant.

Some among Hillary Clinton’s own support base have been making the argument online that Bill Clinton should have realized that chatting with the Attorney General in any context would open the opportunity for the republicans to pretend that he was somehow trying to influence the outcome of an FBI investigation of which Hillary has never been a target and in which Lynch has never been a participant, and therefore he should have avoided any interaction with her at all costs.

Other Hillary supporters have argued that asking Bill Clinton to be that paranoid is unreasonable, and that if he has to avoid being seen with Loretta Lynch, then perhaps he has to avoid being seen with Barack Obama or any of the other people whom the republicans might be able to rope into being a part of the imaginary “FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton” despite the sheer number of times in which the FBI has clarified that Hillary is not being investigated.

Even as that internal debate has played out within Hillary’s own base over the past day and a half, the story largely disappeared from cable news within the first few hours. It received a few obligatory mentions during the evening news shows, but by this morning it was such a dead story that the republicans were forced to quickly play their final card of pushing Lynch to make a statement affirming that she has no intention of interfering with any investigation of any kind. Because this is a Friday heading into a holiday weekend, almost no one heard her statement. And because she got it out of the way now, it means the republicans have no more cards to play on this story next week once the American mainstream is ready to resume paying attention to the news.

In other words, in terms of impact, the whole thing is over already. Those who obsessively hate Hillary Clinton may still be kicking the story around by this time next week for their own amusement, but it’s now clear that the story will have no impact on anyone whose vote is yet to be decided. That means it’s up to Hillary’s supporters to decide whether they want to continue theoretically debating the sageness of Bill’s decision to meet with Loretta Lynch, or if they’re now ready to move on from a story that ended up quickly going nowhere, in favor of focusing on storylines that can still impact the election.

Former President Bill Clinton learned that current Attorney General Loretta Lynch was on an airplane on the same tarmac in Arizona today, and the two decided to chat for a bit before going along their way. Clinton has been known for such impromptu social meetings on a regular basis, once even chatting up republican candidate Ted Cruz on a tarmac despite the two men having almost nothing in common politically. But it took all of a few minutes today for the republican conspiracy nuts to spin Bill’s conversation with Loretta Lynch into an abominable part of a fictional Hillary Clinton conspiracy. Science fiction, in fact.

In the deluded minds of the republican conspiracy theorists, Bill Clinton cornered the Attorney General as some kind of last ditch effort to either beg or bribe or threaten her not to “indict” Hillary Clinton for the imaginary email scandal, or the imaginary Benghazi scandal, or whatever insane thing happened to pop into their heads this time. Nevermind that the FBI has repeatedly clarified that Hillary is a not a target of its email investigation of a Romanian hacker who compromised the State Department server that Hillary wasn’t using, and nevermind that Attorney General Loretta Lynch has nothing to do with the FBI. Because, of course, the facts don’t matter.

Bill Clinton probably should have known that his decision to have a casual social conversation with a fellow politician from his own party would end up being spun into yet another vicious false narrative by the republicans. After all, the Clintons have long lived in a world where they have to think through every single word they say or thing they do in advance, for fear of how the republicans will find a way to spin it into yet another lunatic conspiracy theory.

But it appears that the republican lies about this particular meeting haven’t had any real impact. It was intermittently a story on cable news for part of the day, but by the afternoon most of the networks had seemingly already determined that they couldn’t turn it into a ratings-worthy storyline and moved on to other things. Donald Trump briefly tried to play it up but didn’t get anywhere with it either.

What Trump and the republicans still haven’t figured out is that the nutjob lies and science fiction conspiracy theories they make up about the Clintons may play well with their own lunatic base, but there’s almost never any impact on those in the mainstream who seem to have long ago figured out that any ridiculous claim they hear about Bill or Hillary Clinton is indeed likely to have been made up by the other side.
