The UC-AFT council voted unanimously to endorse Bernie Sanders for president. Although our national organization has endorsed Hillary Clinton, we feel that Sanders’ position on free public higher education, Wall Street reform, universal healthcare, unions, campaign finance, and climate change represent a rare chance to push for a truly progressive agenda.

Sanders’ is the only candidate who has tied the rising cost of higher education and student debt to Wall Street. His plan pushes to increase the number of full-time faculty, reduce administrative costs, and increase spending on instruction. Many of his ideas on universities coincide with my book Why Public Higher Education Should be Free.

Bernie Sanders Becomes Object of Republican Fascination in Iowa

They can't stop talking about him

WATERLOO, Iowa — For Ted Cruz, he is the punchline of a joke that begins with Donald Trump’s health care approach. To the influential talking head Glenn Beck, he is an honest “LSD-flashback, sixties socialist.” To Marco Rubio, he is “an excellent candidate for president”—of Sweden. And for early state primary voters, he is an increasing object of fascination.

As Bernie Sanders has risen in polls, the curiosity of a democratic socialist challenging the powerful Clintons has increasingly captured the attention of conservatives. For many voters, the white-haired senator is an easy caricature of the big-spending, big-government, East-Coast liberal. For others, he is the likable and truth-telling foil to Hillary Clinton. And sometimes, he seems more myth than man. “This guy Bernie Sanders? Give me a break,” Donald Trump said at a rally on Sunday Muscatine, IA. “He’s a socialist, but some people say he’s a communist."

Zephyr Teachout, Bernie ally, just declared she's running for Congress.

ALBANY — Zephyr Teachout, the liberal law professor who ran against Gov. Andrew Cuomo from the left in 2014, has formally declared herself a candidate for a congressional seat in the Hudson Valley.

Teachout, who teaches at Fordham Law School, issued a press release (and posted on Facebook) with her official statement on Monday. She had telegraphed her interest earlier this year, and in doing so received the backing of Democratic county chairs in the 19th district, which covers part of 11 counties in the Hudson Valley and Catskills.

Teachout should have a clear shot at the Democratic nomination after Ulster County executive Mike Hein announced last year he would not be a candidate for the seat.

The seat is currently held by Rep. Chris Gibson, a Republican from Kinderhook who is not seeking re-election so he can explore a statewide campaign in 2018. John Faso, a former Assembly minority leader, and Andrew Heaney, an investor, are vying for the Republican nomination.
