On revolutionary fantasies

http://www.thepeoplesview.net/main/2016/3/28/on-revolutionary-fantasies

By Liberal Librarian

Somehow Sarandon did not find John Edwards' support for the Iraq war so repugnant as she does Hillary Clinton's.

Noted Bernie Sanders supporter Susan Sarandon had this to say about the prospect of a Donald J. Trump presidency:

https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/714612094843404288?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Let me tell you a bit about revolution.

As anyone who reads my profile on Twitter knows, I'm a son of Cuban emigres.

Both my mother and father were sick of the Batista dictatorship. My mother was sanguine about the possibility of a Castro takeover. My father was a bit more perspicacious.

The Revolution happened, and within a couple of years my lower middle class father had his barber shop expropriated by the Communists. Private enterprise was an enemy of the people.

My family escaped Cuba, but I have no doubt that the stress brought about by the loss of of his livelihood and fleeing to a new land led to his ill health later in his life.

I have pictures of my dad when he lived in Cuba. He was a big, strapping man, full of life and vigor. Within a year of arriving in New York City, he suffered a heart attack and stroke. I never knew the man in those pictures.

People like Ms. Sarandon who speak cavalierly about "revolution" are the same type of people on the Right who speak about sending troops to every brush fire war across the globe. They have no knowledge on what they're speaking about, but they think their fantasies accord them a special insight.

Revolutions are brutish, violent things. Revolutions are more often like Petrograd 1918 than Berlin 1989. Unless you have no other choice, they're not things to be wished for.

The likes of Ms. Sarandon think that we're like Paris in 1789, pushed to the brink, ready for revolt.

We're not. We're the richest country in the world. Aside from the screeching on the fringes, most people are content with their lives. And the idea that a country which can't muster above a 40% turnout in off-year elections would be ready to take to the streets to overthrow a Trump presidency is laughable in the extreme.

If those of us on the left were more concerned with voting in every election rather than engaging in revolutionary fantasies, we wouldn't be in the current parlous state. People like Ms. Sarandon prattle on about revolution; it won't be their bodies on the front line.

Voting for Donald J. Trump, or not voting out of pique, will not engender the Revolution. It will merely be a replay of Ms. Sarandon's most famous movie, where she drives a car off the cliff. It's a fantasy, from which she won't suffer consequences. The rest of us will rue our lot.

Trump Supporter Derails CNN Segment by Accusing Fellow Guest of Having an Affair With Ted Cruz

A CNN debate between a Donald Trump supporter and former Ted Cruz communications director Amanda Carpenter went off the rails Friday when the Trump supporter suddenly accused Carpenter of having an illicit affair with her former boss.

CNN’s Kate Bolduan was hosting a segment on the feud between Trump and Ted Cruz. “Are you ready for Trump to move on?” she asked Boston Herald columnist Adriana Cohen.

“Oh, absolutely I think we should move on,” she responded. “Where we should move to is The National Enquirer story that has reported that has Ted Cruz has had affairs with five mistresses, including you’ve been named as well, Amanda.”

“I don’t think that’s ‘moving on’ at all, Adriana,” an exasperated Bolduan interrupted.

The Sexism in American Politics

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/barbra-streisand/sexism-american-politics_b_9548016.html

Barbra Streisand
Singer; Actress; Director; Composer; Activist

Why is it that today even a woman as impressive as Hillary Clinton is judged not by her merits and extensive resume alone, but held to a pernicious double standard?

Twenty-two years ago, I had the honor of introducing Hillary Clinton at a Humanitarian Award Dinner. I said of her then and it holds true today:

“There is no one in this country who would deny the competence, intellect, stamina, warmth and courage of Hillary Rodham Clinton... But the criticism of Hillary Clinton has again demonstrated that the strong, competent woman is still a threatening figure in our culture. ... A man who graduated high in his class at Yale Law school and made partnership in a top law firm would be celebrated. But a woman who accomplishes this is treated with suspicion. Blanche Wiesen Cook, author of the acclaimed biography of Eleanor Roosevelt said of Hillary Clinton, ‘I don’t think there is a First Lady who has been treated as rudely and meanly except for Eleanor Roosevelt.’” Both of these women boldly risked the scorn of “those threatened by the image of a woman carrying the fight for social justice into the public arena.”

I find myself looking back at the fact that nothing much has changed for powerful women. It’s been 24 years since I wrote, “Men and women are clearly measured by a different yardstick... Language gives us an insight into the way women are viewed in a male-dominated society.”

Hillary Clinton and Jimmy Kimmel Brilliantly Dismantle ‘Mansplaining’

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/hillary-clinton-and-jimmy-kimmel-brilliantly-dismantle-mansplaining/

by Tommy Christopher

Among many other challenges, former Secretary of State and current Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton has had to deal with sexist advice from the likes of MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough. On Thursday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hillary and Jimmy Kimmel brilliantly, and hilariously, took apart the condescending “mansplaining” advice she’s been getting. The bit opens with Kimmel asking Clinton if she’s heard of mansplaining, and when she answers him, of course he corrects her.

Politicians often come off stiff or stilted in scripted bits like this, but Hillary handled it like a pro, and struck a blow against mansplainers everywhere, even if she was a bit loud about it. Watch the video above, from Jimmy Kimmel Live.
