I was dumbfounded.

I told her that if the focus of what her school was teaching about MLK and the civil rights movement lead her to believe that it was only a black topic then they were really doing it wrong.

I tried to explain that the extension of human rights to all Americans was vital for America's survival. That without The leadership of the civil rights movement American Democracy was doomed to unravel from the pressure of it's own hypocrisy...

That Dr. King held up a true picture of the state of the USA and to our credit enough people hated what that picture showed to make changes. Barely enough people, true - but enough to make a profound difference.

And unfortunately instead of expanding on that change and working for justice, America is reduced to trying to keep the gains we've made and defend them against those to whom even "tolerance" is a bridge too far. Let alone "Justice"...
