Senate probing new allegation of misconduct against Kavanaugh

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON —The Senate Judiciary Committee is inquiring about at least one additional allegation of misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, according to a letter obtained by NBC News and multiple people familiar with the process.

Republican Senate investigators asked Kavanaugh about the new complaint, NBC News has learned, during a phone call on Tuesday between Kavanaugh and committee staff. Sources told NBC News that Kavanaugh denied the allegation in the letter during the call and a spokesman for the committee declined to comment.

A Republican aide on the committee said the conversation took place shortly after noon. While Republican staff posed questions to Kavanaugh, their Democratic counterparts were also on the call but did not ask any questions.

According to an anonymous complaint sent to Republican Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Kavanaugh physically assaulted a woman he socialized with in the Washington, D.C. area in 1998 while he was inebriated.

#Lose45 to Lose 45

A woman on Twitter started this. Under the hashtag #lose45, she is documenting her progress. She wants to lose 45 pounds so she can wear skinny jeans to Trump's impeachment parade. Many people have joined in.

I would join, but I'm there solely for encouragement. I have lost 65 pounds over the past two years.

Crime show recommendations

So far, I've liked "Tin Star", "Luther", "The Fall", "Broadchurch". "Fallet" is excellent, too - it's about a British detective and a Swedish detective who have to work together. I also watched the "Dragon Tattoo Trilogy" in the original Swedish. I've also watched a bunch only to turn them off because they were so lame.

What do people recommend I watch next? What are your favorite crime dramas?

Disabled family member can't work outside the house

She is trying to get disability but hasn't gotten it yet. She was in three car accidents - none of them her fault - and has had to have numerous ankle surgeries over the past three years. Right now, she cannot walk or drive a car. This may change after another surgery, but for now she's recovering and in PT for her last one. Her husband works two jobs to pay the mortgage and the rest of the bills.

They are in a tough situation, and she wants to work, but can't right now, unless it's from home.

Does anyone have experience with this? It's hard to know from looking online who is legit. She has general office experience - administrative assistant-type stuff. I'm hoping there is something out there for her. But we're stumped on where to start.

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

After clashes with white nationalists, U-Va. library employee suffers a stroke

Source: Washington Post

A University of Virginia employee suffered a stroke Tuesday that some of his friends said was linked to an injury he suffered during the violent demonstrations by white nationalists in Charlottesville last week.

Tyler Magill, 46, a well-known musician and DJ for a local radio station who works for the U-Va. library, was with a small group of people who gathered at a statue of Thomas Jefferson on campus Friday night to resist white nationalists who were marching with torches. The marchers, shouting “Jews will not replace us!” surrounded the students and Magill, who had locked arms at the statue. Fights broke out, with punches and torches thrown, and chemical irritants sprayed.

Magill was struck in the neck by a torch, according to several friends.

I was watching "Manhunt: Unabomber" on Discovery ID, and it got me thinking...

It brought back strong memories from that era. I grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago - like Ted Kaczynski, and went to Northwestern, which was bombed twice by the Unabomber, so I followed the case closely.

I learned a few things about the role of profiling in the case against Kaczynski.

It got me thinking, though - I have a memory of that era being one in which we had a sense of government as STRONG, with capable people running things. Trump has undermined confidence in government. The 1990's was also the era of Waco and the Oklahoma City bombing. What if we had a domestic catastrophe or crisis NOW? The majority of Americans would have no confidence in the government to handle it well, or to pursue justice for the victims. We have a child in the Oval Office, who thinks that all government agencies are HIS agencies. I personally have no faith in the government anymore, and I worry how a crisis or catastrophe would be handled.

We have a President who spends a lot of time lying and boasting on Twitter as if he is still in seventh grade. It sickens me to think how he would react if a tragedy were to happen. He's so insincere, he makes it clear he doesn't truly care about anyone.

The NRA has become a full-on alt-right organization

Several incidents lately have shown that Democrats and black people are not welcome in their organization, they are race-baiting and directing their rhetoric toward their white and far-right supporters.

“Right, you know the parallels between what’s happening in South Africa and the blatant racism and violence we’re seeing from people like the Black Lives Matter crowd,” he said. “If we continue to let this get out of control, to go down this path of this racial tension, this racial hatred that is being forced on the American culture by the Black Lives Matter crowd.”

Got my Vanity Fair this month (Trump / Cohn article)

It includes an article on Trump's relationship with Roy Cohn. It had this memorable quote:

For author Sam Roberts, the essence of Cohn’s influence on Trump was the triad: “Roy was a master of situational immorality . . . . He worked with a three-dimensional strategy, which was: 1. Never settle, never surrender. 2. Counter-attack, counter-sue immediately. 3. No matter what happens, no matter how deeply into the muck you get, claim victory and never admit defeat.” As columnist Liz Smith once observed, “Donald lost his moral compass when he made an alliance with Roy Cohn.”
