The full text of President Obama's remarks on common sense gun reform

I don't know if this has been already posted - but in case you wanted to read it, here it is:

Remarks by the President on Common-Sense Gun Safety Reform

Publicity Seeking Anti-government Zealots

By now every one has heard that a group of well armed anti-government protesters has occupied several deserted buildings on Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Oregon. They are apparently led by Ammon Bundy, the son of Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher infamous for his own weeks-long standoff with federal agents. Ammon Bundy claims the group is supporting two local ranchers convicted arson on the wildlife refuge, which of course is federal property. he also says the group also wants the land which makes up the refuge returned to local rangers.

(snip)

Based on what I have seen and read about Bundy and his group of anti-government zealots, they are not really concerned with the plight of the local ranchers. What they really crave is national media attention to publicize their anti-government rhetoric in hopes of igniting a widespread anti-government movement across the country. Always looking for ratings, so far the TV networks and cable news organizations have be more than happy to oblige.

Many on social media have been calling the armed protesters “terrorists” and referring to them as Y’all Qaeda. They are calling for the government law enforcement to physically remove the protesters which could easily lead to violence. I have even received a emailed request to sign a petition to have the protesters arrested. I wrote back saying, this is a dumb idea. Government agencies like the FBI have learned hard lessons from past violent clashes with armed anti-government groups at Waco, Ruby Ridge, etc. Federal authorities are giving every indication that they are not going to give Bundy and his group what they want, the publicity of an armed confrontation with local and federal law enforcement. There is presently no confrontation because law enforcement is no where to be seen around the wildlife refuge. It takes two to tango and Bundy and his group are without a dance partner.

(snip)

Despite the clams to the contrary, the protesters are occupying public property for one reason and one reason only – publicity. Take away the national publicity they are receiving and it won’t be long before they will decide pack up and go home. However, due to the rights provided to the press by the First Amendment of the Constitution, only the news media can make the decision to no longer attend their news conferences, interview their leaders, or even cover their activities with cameras from afar. Given their obsession with ratings, and the fact that they are normally drawn like flies to molasses to this kind of story, this will not be an easy decision for news organizations to make. However, these organizations make decisions on a daily basis whether it is in the public’s best interests to cover stories like this one.

You can help your favorite news organization make the decision to deprive these zealots of the media attention they crave but don’t deserve. Please contact your favorite news source and make your voice heard.

Don’t Let Them Terrorize You

The object of terrorists is to terrorize – to make enemies which they can’t possibly defeat by ordinary means fear them, normally by attacking civilian populations, in order to achieve their goals. By spreading fear throughout those populations, they seek to magnify their perceived ability to do harm far in excess of their actual capabilities. For instance by killing 14 people and wounding 21 at Christmas party, the terrorists in San Bernardino hoped to terrorize hundreds of millions of people throughout the United States. How can we win the war on terror? By refusing to be terrorized and then by working with all of our potential partner countries to root out the source of the threats at their source.

We have to think with our brains instead of our emotions and to put the actual terror threat in perspective. How do we do that – try this on for size – in the United States you were far more likely to be struck by lightening in 2015 than you were of becoming a casualty in a terrorist attack. If you have trouble believing this statistic, here is the proof:

"The chance of an average person living in the US being struck by lightning in a given year is estimated at 1 in 960,000,..... Lightening Strikes (from Wikipedia)]

List of US terrorist attack in US: Terrorist attacks by violent jihadis in the US since 9/11 ]

14 people and wounded 21 others in San Bernardino Christmas party – 14 killed, 21 wounded > 35 causalities

Firing on two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee - 5 killed one wounded > 6 causalities

Muhammad art exhibit event in Garland, Texas - 1 injured > 1 causality

Total causalities from terrorist attacks in the US in 2015: 42

Total population of the United States: 322,583,006 as of July 1 2015.

Therefore the calculated odds of being a casualty of a terrorist attack in the United States during 2015 are: 1 in 7,867,878

So in 2015 you were 8 times more likely to be struck by lightening than you were of becoming a causality in a terrorist attack in the US.

In 2015, police officers killed 1186 people, ........

Your New Year's Exercise Resolution – A Promise to Yourself You Can Keep

Each year about this time hundreds of thousands of people nationwide finally decide that they need to start exercising. These folks have many different reasons or combinations of reasons for starting an exercise program again, or maybe for the first time. They may be tired of being out of shape, they may have gained too many pounds, they may not like what they see in the mirror, they may be following doctors orders....and the list goes on and on. There is one thing many of these folks have in common....they intend to stick with their new exercise program at least until their goals are achieved, and perhaps for the rest of their lives. Far too many have something else in common…they will fail, and they will fail miserably.

People start exercise programs throughout the year, but early January sees the biggest number of new exercisers by far. After overeating through the holidays, for these folks it is a time of new beginnings, for New Year’s resolutions. Every January, health clubs across the nation brace for the onslaught of new members, many confidently signing contracts for several months or even a full year’s membership to take advantage of lower rates.

Veteran gym rats like me patiently put up with crowded aerobic machines and stand in line for weight machines while the new folks try to figure out how they work. We endure this stoically because most of us understand that it is this sudden influx of new members, and the new money they bring in, that allows many health clubs to continue to provide services for long time members like ourselves throughout the rest of the year. And more importantly we know from long experience that by the middle of March most of the “New Year resolutioners” (as we call them) will be gone, and we will again have the clubs to ourselves. I have spoken to others who participate in other types of exercises program and they relate the same situation. It seems that most folks are far better at starting new exercise programs than sticking with them.

As I watched this phenomenon repeat itself year after year, I began to try to figure out how people who begin working out with the best of intentions and resolve can ultimately be more successful. If you are one of those people who is seriously considering starting an exercise program, I have come up with some suggestions below that will hopefully increase your chances for success. Maybe some of these suggestions will not work for you. However, I truly believe that you can use at least some of my suggestions to successfully to make exercise a part of your life - not for a month, or even for a year, but for the rest of your time on earth. No one can guarantee your success. In fact from what I have seen the odds are against you; it certainly appears that far more people drop out than succeed. However, I believe that if you can make some of these concepts work for you, you can be one of those people who defy the odds. Here are my suggestions:

The article then goes on to provide a number of suggestions with titles like, "Chose an exercise you enjoy", "Start slowly" "How to overcome excuses" etc. Good reading for everyone who is intent on starting an exercise program and is determined to stick with it.
