A California man who was one of at least five people that tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a disco-themed birthday party at the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes has died.

A California man who was one of at least five people that tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a disco-themed birthday party at the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes has died. According to The Washington Post, 75-year-old Bert Argo passed away Friday, March 27. Argo and his wife Carol attended the 70th birthday party of Susan Brooks, the former mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes, on March 8.
Brooks’ daughter says her mother consulted Los Angeles County Supervisor (and family friend) Janice Hahn about whether they should hold the party. They knew that the virus was an issue but since Los Angeles had yet to issue any bans on large gatherings, they opted to send an email telling attendees not to come if they were feeling unwell or showing any symptoms of illness. Since then, at least five people tested positive for the virus while 11 others who attended the party felt ill.
According to Argo’s daughter Melanie Young, her mother Carol also got sick but has thankfully recovered from her illness. Young also said that her parents had not shown signs of illness before the party.

'The Flash' actor Logan Williams dies at the age of 16

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Logan Williams, who appeared in CW’s “The Flash” as the young Barry Allen, has died. He was 16.
Williams’ agent, Michelle Gauvin, says he died Thursday. Gauvin did not give the cause of his death, but she said his sudden death comes as a “shock.”
“The Flash” star Grant Gustin posted a photo of him with Williams and actor Jesse L. Martin on Instagram that was taken during the filming of a series pilot in 2014. Gustin called the news of Williams’ death “devastating” then spoke highly about his talent and professionalism.
John Wesley Shipp, who played Barry Allen in the CBS version of “The Flash,” posted photos with Williams on Twitter. Shipp said he was “heartsick” after hearing the news.
Williams started acting at the age of 10. He appeared in other television shows, including “When Calls the Heart” and “The Whispers.”

China-to-New York ventilator shipment shows supply scramble

Andrew Cuomo said Saturday the Chinese government was facilitating a shipment of 1,000 donated ventilators to his state, highlighting the extreme measures leaders are taking in what has become a cutthroat scramble to independently secure enough lifesaving devices during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a sign of the disorganized response to the global crisis, Cuomo went out of his way to praise the collaboration of the Chinese government in securing a shipment of the breathing machines that was scheduled to arrive at Kennedy Airport on Saturday, while acknowledging that the U.S. government’s stockpile of medical supplies would fall drastically short.
“We’re all in the same battle here,” Cuomo said, noting that the state of Oregon also volunteered to send 140 ventilators to New York. “And the battle is stopping the spread of the virus.”
Leaders like Cuomo have been forced to go outside normal channels and work with authoritarian governments and private companies, or create partnerships with other states, as the U.S. stockpile of medical supplies is being limited and the Trump administration has threatened to cut off exports, which could erode diplomatic relations.

Democrats say Trump pick for coronavirus recovery watchdog is not independent enough

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump’s pick for the new watchdog overseeing $2.3 trillion in coronavirus-related fiscal spending is not independent enough to do the job, congressional Democrats said on Saturday.
The White House said late on Friday Trump would nominate Brian Miller, a special assistant to the president and senior associate counsel in the Office of White House Counsel, to the role of special inspector general for pandemic recovery.
“The Inspector General providing oversight of the federal response of this historic relief package for workers and families must be independent from politics,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed in her own statement. “The President’s nomination of one of his own lawyers clearly fails that test.
Senate Democrats, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and the top Democratic senator on the Senate Finance Committee, also criticized the move.

(Reuters) - When Reuters photographer Carlos Barria boarded American Airlines flight 4511 from Washington Reagan National Airport to New Orleans on Friday for an assignment, he was the only passenger on the 76-seat jet.
“There were some awkward moments,” Barria said.
Like when the gate agent announced a formal boarding process only to remember that Barria was the sole passenger who would board, or when the pilot approached his seat to personally explain a delay in take-off due to a mechanical issue, rather than speak over the PA system.
The two flight attendants invited Barria to sit in a first-class seat and went through the safety demonstration for Barria alone.
“I felt I had to pay attention,” he said.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced borrowers and lenders across the globe to discuss ways to pay debts
The Trump Organization has laid off or furloughed about 1,500 employees at hotels in the U.S. and Canada as the coronavirus pandemic inflicts pain on the president’s private business, the Washington Post reported late Friday.
With most of U.S. President Trump’s hotels and clubs closed amid stay-at-home orders around the world, the Trump Organization has responded by cutting costs, like other companies in the hospitality and tourism industries.
The family business of President Trump is also in informal discussions with Deutsche Bank AG about delaying some loan payments as the coronavirus forces widespread disruptions to the economy, Bloomberg reported Friday.
Trump Organization representatives reached out to the Deutsche Bank’s private banking unit in New York late last month and the talks are ongoing, according to the New York Times.

In Palm Beach County, Fla., the Trump Organization has not paid rent of $54,534.25 that was due April 1 on land it leases from the county government for the Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, a county representative said Friday. The Trump Organization said it has until April 10 to make the monthly payment without penalty.
“Because payment has not become due, and in light of Governor’s DeSantis’ executive order shutting down businesses throughout the State of Florida as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, the County advised us to refrain from making payment until they have finalized their policy for the handling of their numerous leases,” Alan Garten, a Trump Organization executive, said in a statement. “As soon as the County finalizes its guidance, we will, of course, fully and timely comply with its directives as well as continue to comply with the requirements of the lease.”
Palm Beach County officials did not respond to a question about Garten’s comment that the company was advised not to make the payment.

LONDON (Reuters) - A conspiracy theory that links 5G mobile telecommunications masts to the spread of the novel coronavirus is dangerous fake news and completely false, Britain said on Saturday after masts in several parts of the country were torched.
When asked by a reporter about the so called “theory” that 5G telecommunications masts could play a role in the spread of the disease, British Cabinet Officer Minister Michael Gove said: “That is just nonsense, dangerous nonsense as well.”
Mobile phone masts have in recent days been vandalised and telecoms staff abused in Birmingham in central England and Merseyside in northern England, damaging connectivity at a time when people are relying on it more than ever.
An arson attack at a tower in Birmingham owned by BT (BT.L), Britain’s biggest telecoms company, caused significant damage. It provided 2G, 3G and 4G services to thousands of people, but did not have 5G capability, the company said.

Coronavirus wreaks grimmest toll yet in New York state: 630 dead in a day

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Coronavirus-related illnesses killed 630 people in the last day in New York state, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday, in the bleakest 24 hours yet for the U.S. state hit hardest by the pandemic.
The novel coronavirus has now killed 3,565 people in the state and the situation is particularly worrying on Long Island, east of New York City, where the number of cases “is like a fire spreading,” Cuomo told a news conference.
Health experts calculate that New York, home both to bustling Manhattan and hilly farm country stretching to the Canadian border, might be around a week away from the worst point in the health crisis which has killed about 60,000 people worldwide.
“We’re not yet at the apex, we’re getting closer ... Our reading of the projections is we’re somewhere in the seven-day range,” Cuomo said.
