It wasn't a debate, but CNN's 7-hour climate forum laid bare key differences among Democrats

2020 Democrats range in how they see nuclear power, abolishing the filibuster, and accountability.

CNN’s seven-hour town hall on the climate crisis wasn’t the debate many activists have spent months calling for. But Wednesday night’s marathon event teased out notable differences among Democratic presidential contenders, giving voters a taste of how each candidate might approach climate policy if elected.

Two of the main issues where candidates staked out wildly different stances were nuclear power and abolishing the filibuster. They also differed on fracking, the process of extracting natural gas to be used for energy.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Joe Biden took heat over a controversial fundraiser scheduled for Thursday night and hosted by an oil executive. And Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) criticized the forum’s focus on personal sacrifices — like giving up eating meat or using plastic straws — arguing instead for accountability from the fossil fuel industry.

In back-to-back segments beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern time and stretching late into the night, candidates laid out their climate plans and responded to questions from moderators and selected audience members.

Manafort's lawyers: State charges are double jeopardy

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort filed court papers seeking the dismissal of his New York mortgage fraud case, arguing that the charges brought in the wake of his federal convictions amount to double jeopardy.

The state case involves some of the same allegations as federal cases that have landed Manafort behind bars, violating a state law that bars repeat prosecutions for the same general conduct, lawyer Todd Blanche wrote in the filing late Wednesday.

The factual overlap between the federal and state cases “is extensive — if not total,” Blanche wrote.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. announced the state charges in March, minutes after Manafort was sentenced in the second of his two federal cases, which stemmed from the special counsel probe of Russian election meddling.

Brexit: Boris Johnson to table motion for general election - live news

Source: The Guardian

More than a dozen Tories defy leader by voting in favour of seizing control of Commons timetable

Boris Johnson has announced that he will ask parliament to support plans for a snap October general election after suffering a humiliating defeat in his first House of Commons vote as prime minister.

Former cabinet ministers including Philip Hammond and David Gauke were among 21 Conservative rebels who banded together with opposition MPs to seize control of the parliamentary timetable on a dramatic day in Westminster.

The move was aimed at paving the way for a bill tabled by the Labour backbencher Hilary Benn, which is designed to block a no-deal Brexit by forcing the prime minister to request an extension to article 50 if he cannot strike a reworked deal with the EU27.

NYT tells 2020 Dems to avoid scaring white people -- at all costs

Published 8 hours ago

By Salon

Thomas Edsall’s demographic analysis is almost always misleading (FAIR.org, 2/10/15, 10/9/15, 6/5/16, 3/30/18, 7/24/19) — and his latest column for the New York Times is no exception.

“We Aren’t Seeing White Support for Trump for What It Is,” the headline complains — with the subhead explaining, “A crucial part of his coalition is made up of better-off white people who did not graduate from college.”

Why does this matter? Edsall’s column is largely a write-up of a paper by two political scientists, Herbert Kitschelt and Philipp Rehm, who note that better-off whites without college degrees “tend to endorse authoritarian noneconomic policies and tend to oppose progressive economic policies,” and are therefore “a constituency that is now decisively committed to the Republican Party.” (By “authoritarian policies,” the researchers are mainly talking about racism and xenophobia.) Low-income, low-education whites, by contrast, “tend to support progressive economic policies and tend to endorse authoritarian policies on the noneconomic dimension,” and are therefore “conflicted in their partisan allegiance.”

What’s at stake in presenting one of these constituencies as “crucial” is how you approach the task of defeating Trump: If he’s turning out his key supporters through race-baiting and immigrant-bashing, the argument goes, then Democrats need to take care not to be too outspoken on issues of race and immigration. And so Edsall confidently concludes:

Mitch McConnell suggests Trump cannot be trusted to mean what he says on guns

"If the president is in favor of a number of things he has discussed openly and publicly and I know we will pass it and it’ll become law, I’ll put it on the floor."

In the wake of another series of mass shootings, President Donald Trump has repeatedly waffled and wavered on whether to take any action to stop the epidemic of gun violence in America. NRA-backed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has long opposed any such progress, said Tuesday he will wait and see if Trump actually means any of the things he said in public before scheduling any Senate votes.

After mass shootings in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Gilroy, California, left dozens of people dead, Trump — who benefited from more than $29 million in NRA spending in his 2016 race — initially said he wanted to ensure that all gun purchases required background checks.

“Frankly, we need intelligent background checks,” Trump told reporters in early August. “I spoke to Mitch McConnell yesterday…. He is totally on board,” the president claimed.

But after speaking with NRA officials, Trump changed his tune. Later in August, he reminded the nation that “we already have a lot of background checks.”

Odessa mass shooter used gun show loophole Mitch McConnell refuses to close

By Oliver Willis -
September 3, 2019

The Democratic House passed a background check bill in February that would have closed the gun show loophole the Odessa mass shooter exploited. But Mitch McConnell has refused to hold a vote in the Senate.

The mass shooter in Odessa, Texas, used the "gun show loophole" to acquire the assault rifle he used to murder seven people and wound 23 on Monday.

The shooter was considered a "prohibited person," banned from purchasing a gun through traditional channels because he had been diagnosed as mentally ill. So he bought his weapon in a private sale.

In a private sale, there is no requirement for a background check like there would be at a gun store.

"Law enforcement sources tell me the shooter in the #OdessaShooting purchased that AR-style rifle in a PRIVATE SALE, evading a federal background check," ABC reporter Matt Gutman said on Tuesday.

Legislation addressing such sales, named the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, or H.R. 8, passed the House in February by a vote of 240-190. A total of 188 of the votes opposing the bill came from Republicans.

Coast Guard spouse of the year: Military families shouldn't have to rely on food banks

By Jessica Manfre -
September 3, 2019

'How could the needs of those who would sacrifice their lives for this country be ignored?'

When Americans see military men and women in their uniforms, a common greeting is "Thank you for your service." Service members will smile, nod, and continue on in quiet pride to serve the United States. I know, because I am married to one.

What Americans do not know is that many of our junior service members live in poverty.

At a time when our defense budget is nearly as high as it has ever been, you'd imagine that those who serve would not have to worry about putting food on the table. Unfortunately, you'd be wrong and that is because there is a lack of affordable child care and employment opportunities for military spouses.

The partial government shutdown that started last December and lasted more than a month — making it the longest government shutdown in U.S. history — rattled the lives of so many Americans across the country.

https://shareblue.com/coast-guard-spouse-of-the-year-military-families-shouldnt-have-to-use-food-banks/

-snip-

Although the government shutdown is months behind us, food insecurity persists for a quarter of our military families. As time goes on, it becomes increasingly more difficult for our junior families to provide for their families.

Military families are a proud and resilient group of people, but even we need help. Today, many families of those who would willingly die for our country are lining up at food banks. This can't be our reality — but it is. I implore our elected officials to recognize the needs of our military families. Stand for them the way they do for you.

She has spent the past decade working with vulnerable populations and advocating for those in need, and is currently finishing her master's in social work. She resides in Illinois with her husband of 12 years and her two children.

During WWII and prior to that war a lot of people men and woman joined the service to get a paycheck....................out of that paycheck they sent home money, so that family could survive......................the right wing libertarian BS mantra........................this is outright shameful.....................................

Economics U.S. Manufacturing Gauge Contracts for First Time in Three Years

By Reade Pickert
September 3, 2019, 10:00 AM EDT Updated on September 3, 2019, 1:52 PM EDT

A key U.S. factory gauge unexpectedly contracted for the first time since 2016, sending stocks and bond yields lower and boosting expectations for interest-rate cuts as global manufacturing woes deepen.

The Institute for Supply Management’s purchasing managers index fell to 49.1 in August, weaker than all forecasts in a Bloomberg survey of economists, data released Tuesday showed. Figures below 50 indicate the manufacturing economy is generally shrinking. The group’s gauge of new orders dropped to a more than seven-year low, while the production index hit the lowest since late 2015.

The data add to concern a broader U.S. recession is coming and may complicate the re-election chances of President Donald Trump, whose pledges to revive manufacturing have been a signature issue. At the same time, Trump’s escalating tariffs on imports from China have been a major reason behind factory weakness that threatens to spread to consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of the world’s largest economy.

In the U.S. stock market, the ISM numbers torpedoed a morning rebound and left the S&P 500 poised for its worst loss in seven sessions, down as much as 1.2% to erase almost half of last week’s rally. The 10-year Treasury yield and the dollar fell.

-snip-

A separate factory PMI from IHS Markit came in at 50.3 on Tuesday, showing manufacturing was barely expanding. Economists and investors tend to more closely follow the ISM report, which dates to 1931.

The “shock effect” of the latest ISM report “adds to recession fears, and the components were also pretty weak,” said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, in an interview. “This does confirm that we’re not bottoming out yet in manufacturing in this country, and that’s significant.”

Collins says voting with Trump not in 'interests' of her state after doing it 93% of time

By Oliver Willis -
September 3, 2019

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) admits it's bad to vote 'straight party line' — but that hasn't stopped her from doing it.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) argued in an interview that she doesn't vote along a "party line" and that to do so is "one of the thing things that's wrong" with modern politics. But Collins has closely voted for the Trump agenda and was a champion of his Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh.

"You could argue politically that it would be easier for me to just follow a straight party line, but that's not what I think is in the best interests of the people of Maine or this country," said Collins in an interview with the Bangor Daily News published Monday.

"In fact, I think that's one of the things that's wrong with our politics today, and I believe we need more people who will seek common ground and try to work things out."

Yet, Collins' record in the Senate in the last two years shows someone closely aligned with Trump.

According to Congressional Quarterly's study of "presidential support" votes from 2017 to 2019, Collins voted with Trump 93.3% of the time. Rather than placing her in between the two major parties, Collins' voting record puts her near the top of the list of Trump supporters.

Hong Kong leader says she never discussed resigning with Beijing

Jessie Pang, Clare Jim 7 Min Read

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday she had never asked the Chinese government to let her resign to end the Chinese-ruled city’s political crisis, responding to a Reuters report about a recording of her saying she would step down if she could.

China for its part expressed confidence in Lam and her government but said it would not sit idly by if the unrest threatened Chinese security and sovereignty.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets of the former British colony since mid-June in sometimes violent protests against now-suspended draft legislation that could have seen people sent to mainland China for trial in Communist Party controlled courts.

Lam told business leaders last week that she had caused “unforgivable havoc” by introducing the bill and that if she had a choice she would apologize and resign, according to a leaked audio recording.
