Hong Kong leader says extradition bill is dead, but critics unconvinced

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday the extradition bill that sparked the Chinese-ruled city’s biggest crisis in decades is dead and that government work on the legislation had been a “total failure”, but critics accused her of playing with words.

The bill, which would allow people in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party, sparked huge and at times violent street protests and plunged the former British colony into turmoil.

In mid-June, Lam responded to protests that drew hundreds of thousands of people on to the streets by suspending the bill, but that did not stop demonstrations that shut government offices and brought parts of the financial center to a standstill.

Her latest attempt to restore order did not satisfy many protesters who stood by demands that she completely withdraw the bill.

'Protesters as terrorists': growing number of states turn anti-pipeline activism into a crime

Conservative lawmakers have put forward laws criminalizing protests in at least 18 states since 2017 that civil liberties advocates say are unconstitutional

From the Standing Rock camps in North Dakota to tree-sits in Texas, activists have attempted to stop pipeline construction with massive shows of civil disobedience. Now they could be forced to change those tactics, or face heavy penalties under a wave of new anti-protest laws that civil liberties advocates say violate the first amendment.

Conservative lawmakers have put forward laws criminalizing protests that disrupt the construction and operation of pipelines in at least 18 states since 2017.

Seven states have passed laws that ratchet up the penalties for activists protesting or even planning protests of oil and gas pipelines and other “critical infrastructure”

At least six more states are considering such laws

In each case, misdemeanors are elevated to felonies, and criminal and civil punishments are escalated drastically

The ACLU and the Center for Constitutional Rights have mounted challenges against such laws in Louisiana and South Dakota.

“This is a trend that shows no sign of slowing, let alone stopping,” said Elly Page, who has been tracking anti-protest legislation for more than two years as a legal adviser for the International Center for Non-Profit Law.

Experts warn of climate change's impact on Chesapeake Bay

By DAVID McFADDEN 2 hours ago

CONOWINGO, Md. (AP) — When the Conowingo Dam opened to fanfare nearly a century ago, the massive wall of concrete and steel began its job of harnessing water power in northern Maryland. It also quietly provided a side benefit: trapping sediment and silt before it could flow miles downstream and pollute the Chesapeake Bay, the nation’s largest estuary.

The old hydroelectric dam spanning the lower Susquehanna River is still producing power, but its days of effectively trapping sediment in a 14-mile (22.5-kilometer) long reservoir behind its walls are over. Behind the 94-foot (29-meter) high barrier lies a massive inventory of coal-black muck — some 200 million tons (181 million metric tons) of pollutants picked up over decades from farmlands, industrial zones and towns.

How big a threat this sediment stockpile poses to the Chesapeake Bay or whether anything can even be done about it depends on who one talks to. With Maryland pushing to curb pollution in dam discharges, the issue has become a political football as Conowingo’s operator seeks to renew its federal license to operate the dam for 46 more years after its old license expired.

And as negotiations drag on, the lack of agreement about curbing runoff pollutants following the wettest year on record imperils hard-won gains in restoring the Chesapeake Bay.

Nominee to lead FAA faces questions about tenure at Delta

By DAVID KOENIG and TOM KRISHER today

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into whether Delta Air Lines violated FAA rules about promoting safety at a time when President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the agency was in charge of Delta’s flight operations.

The FAA investigation grew out of allegations by a Delta pilot that the airline retaliated against her for raising safety concerns. The Associated Press obtained a copy of an FAA letter sent to the pilot’s attorney detailing the investigation. The FAA declined to comment on the probe.

Trump’s nominee, Stephen Dickson, is under growing criticism from Senate Democrats over his initial failure to disclose his involvement in the case of the whistle-blowing pilot, who was grounded a few weeks after she raised safety issues to Dickson and other Delta executives.

Dickson authorized grounding the pilot for a psychiatric evaluation. Outside doctors later cleared her, and she has since returned to flying at Delta.

King Duped Into Tweeting Earnest Praise For Col. Jessup From 'A Few Good Men'

By Kate Riga
July 5, 2019 8:00 am

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) spent his Fourth of July getting duped on Twitter, first retweeting Ken Klippenstein of the web series “Young Turks” and earnestly praising Klippenstein’s “uncle” — actually Jack Nicholson’s character in “A Few Good Men.”

King has since deleted the retweet, as Klippenstein changed his Twitter handle to “Steve King is a white supremacist” after the congressman retweeted him.

King was burned by the Twitter name change once more on the holiday, retweeting someone who changed their handle to “Steve King drinks pee pee.” As of early Friday morning, the tweet is still on King’s timeline.

Trump's Casting His Census Citizenship Question Ire At Wilbur Ross

By Nicole Lafond
July 5, 2019 8:11 am

President Trump decided to post a cryptic tweet that befuddled members of his administration and broke with his own Justice Department on the census citizenship question after he had some long chats with conservative friends on the phone, Trump’s favorite mode of communication.

The main target of his ire in those long phone calls? Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, according to the Washington Post. Trump reportedly thinks his Justice Department and Commerce Department backed down too easily and privately believes that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is out to get him.

Trump continued his phone calls on the Fourth of July, complaining to aides and friends about Ross. He reportedly told advisers that he intends to make the citizenship question issue the Trump administration’s top priority in the next several days.

“Fix this,” Trump has repeatedly told aides.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Thousands of mothers marched in Hong Kong on Friday in support of students who have taken to the streets in recent weeks to protest against an extradition bill that would allow people to be sent to mainland China for trial.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam has asked to meet students in the Chinese-ruled city as she tries to fend off pressure after a month of protests over a proposed law that has plunged the Chinese-ruled city into turmoil.

Protesters stormed Hong Kong’s legislature on Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the former British colony’s return to China. This followed mass demonstrations last month against Lam’s extradition bill.

Beijing-backed Lam has suspended the bill but protesters are demanding a full withdrawal.

Shouted down: Voters give Indiana Republican an earful on Mueller and Medicare for All

Published 1 min ago

By Matthew Chapman

On Wednesday, Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) held a town hall meeting with constituents in Fort Wayne, Indiana — and according to KPC News, it did not go well for him, as attendees shouted him down on numerous issues.

Local citizens did not care for Banks’ proposal for deep 14 percent across-the-board discretionary spending cuts that exempted national defense. When asked about debt relief for student loans, he replied, “Why should anybody pay off student loans for someone else?” One man who said he was drowning in student debt replied furiously, “How am I supposed to survive? Why is defense spending not touched?”

On health care, Banks’ positions were similarly ill-received. He referred to Obamacare as a “disaster” and Medicare for All as “a dangerous proposal brought forth by the left,” which led the crowd to erupt in anger. “Every other developed country has some form of socialized medicine,” said constituent Marty Lemert.

The town hall also delved into the Russia investigation by former special counsel Robert Mueller, who highlighted 10 potential episodes of obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump. Banks refused to acknowledge this, saying he had read no examples of collusion or obstruction of justice in the report and challenging attendees, “Show me in the report where there’s an impeachable offense.” That caused the crowd to roar with anger again.
