During a photo op with White House interns on Monday, President Donald Trump refused to answer questions from Associated Press reporter Catherine Lucey about whether he thinks Attorney General Jeff Sessions should resign or has something he wants to say to the public about health care, instead telling her to be quiet.
Trump then turned to the interns and lectured them about how the press isnt supposed to ask questions.
Theyre not supposed to do that, but theyre doing it, but theyre not supposed to, he said. So, shes breaking you know, shes breaking a code, but they dont care. They dont care about breaking codes.

Has The Moment For Environmental Justice Been Lost?
Reprinted with permission from ProPublica.
Given how President Donald Trump has taken aim at the Environmental Protection Agency with regulatory rollbacks and deep proposed budget cuts, it may come as no surprise that the Office of Environmental Justice is on the chopping block.
This tiny corner of the EPA was established 24 years ago to advocate for minorities and the poor, populations most likely to face the consequences of pollution and least able to advocate for themselves.
It does so by acting as a middleman, connecting vulnerable communities with those who can help them. It heads a group that advises EPA officials about injustices and another that brings together representatives from other federal agencies and the White House to swap proposals.
When it works, all the talk leads to grants, policies and programs that change lives.

public Pension Funds Profit Trump Possible Shady Russian Deals
I bet you didnt know you were contributing to Donald Trump. If you are a teacher in Texas, a police officer in New York, or one of the nearly 2 million participants in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), your pension dollars help make Donald Trump richer and more powerful. They may also be supporting possibly shady business deals between Russians and the Trump Organization.
According to a report distributed by Reuters, public pension funds in at least seven states invest millions of dollars in the CIM Group that owns the Trump SoHo Hotel in New York City and pays a Trump company to operate it. CalPERS paid CIM $1,722,418 in management fees for the first three months of 2017.
Two public interest advocacy groups, Free Speech for People and the Courage Campaign, are organizing a campaign to get the pensions to divest from the Trump projects. They charge The money used for this investment comes from mandatory deductions from the paychecks of public employees. These employees are thus forced to indirectly subsidize President Trump beyond the Constitutions mandate of a fixed salary. Constitutional lawyers questioned by Reuters expressed concern that the investments, which produce payments to the Trump organization and Donald Trump, violate Article II of the U.S. Constitution. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a federal lawsuit charging that Trumps business holdings violate the Constitutions emoluments clause, which makes it illegal for government officials to accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State. The American Civil Liberties Union is considering a suit against Trump for using his position as President to attract business away from other hotels. A White House spokesperson dismissed all the accusations as partisan politics.

Pocket Vetoes and Recess Appointments: How Trump can bypass Congress
Notwithstanding his Twitter tantrums, Trump is about to be handed an array of other options for getting his own way. He wants Christopher Wray appointed as FBI Director. He want to scuttle Congresss Russian sanctions Bill. Above all, he wants to rid himself of Special Counsel Mueller and the Russia Investigation

Morning Digest: How California's two top primaries could wind up saving a vulnerable republican
The Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest is compiled by David Nir, Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, and Carolyn Fiddler, with additional contributions from David Jarman, Steve Singiser, Daniel Donner, James Lambert, and David Beard.
LEADING OFF
● CA-48: Ugh. This is some very frustrating newsand yet another reason why we hate top-two primaries with a passion. GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is looking decidedly vulnerable next year after his Southern California House seat swung from a 55-43 win for Mitt Romney to a 48-46 win for Hillary Clinton, and no fewer than four notable Democrats have jumped in to challenge the incumbent, who has only won by less than double digits once in his three-decade career.
But a new candidate in the race could screw everything up, and that's because businessman Stelian Onufrei is a Republican. In any normal state, Onufrei, who's pledged to self-fund $500,000, would simply run in the GOP primary against Rohrabacher, while Democrats would go about nominating their own candidateno problem.
In California, though, all candidates from all parties run together on a single primary ballot, and the top-two vote-getters advance to the November general electionregardless of what party they belong to. That means that two Democrats or two Republicans could win any given primary, something that happens with some frequency. Most of the time, one-party races take place in dark blue or dark red districts and no one really complains. But sometimes, when dark stars align, they happen in swing districts, and it's always been to the detriment of Democrats.

Perry study backfires again: Draft praises efficiency standards he is stalling
A leaked draft study of the electric grid requested by Energy Secretary Rick Perry found that federal energy efficiency policies are in the process of saving U.S. consumers and businesses more than a half trillion dollars.
Meanwhile, the new administration is halting energy efficiency policies and gutting funding for energy efficiency improvements for American homes. Perrys department is currently being sued by 11 states for stalling efficiency mandates for air conditioners and other high-energy products.
Back in April, Perry ordered a study from Department of Energy (DOE) staff to back up his claims that solar and wind power were undermining the U.S. electric grids reliability. But a July draft obtained by Bloomberg debunked that attack. Instead, the authors found that the power system is more reliable today than ever.
After obtaining a copy of the draft, ThinkProgress reported the study concluded a large fraction of Americas aging fleet of coal and nuclear plants are simply not economic to operate anymore.

Trump calls top Intel Dem 'Sleazy Adam Schiff'
Source: The Hill
President Trump criticized Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.) in a tweet on Monday, referring to the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence panel as "sleazy" and "biased."
"Sleazy Adam Schiff, the totally biased Congressman looking into 'Russia,' spends all of his time on television pushing the Dem loss excuse!" Trump tweeted Monday.
Schiff on Sunday said that Trump is concerned that the special counsel investigation into the Russian meddling could include his finances.
The president is clearly worried, about accusations that Russia laundered money through the Trump Organization, Schiff told CBSs Face the Nation.

Where are Charlie and Dave, Mrs. Kochs two mischievous boys? While the Koch brothers have stayed out of the national limelight since the White House was acquired by Trump and Company, that doesnt mean the two right-wing billionaire brats are any less active in trying to supplant American democracy with their little laissez-fairyland plutocracy. In fact, in late June, you couldve found them in one of their favorite hideaways with about 400 other uber-wealthy rascals, plotting some political hijinks for next years elections.
This is the Koch Boys Billionaire Club, which meets annually at some luxury resort to schmooze, strategize, hear a select group of GOP elected officials kiss up to them then throw money into a big pot to finance the Kochs planned takeover of America. It costs $100,000 per person just to attend the three-day Koch Fest, but participants are also expected to give generously to the brothers goal of dumping $400 million into buying the 2018 elections.
This year, the group gathered in Colorado Springs at the ultra-lux Broadmoor Hotel and resort, owned by the brothers billionaire pal and right-wing co-conspirator, Philip Anschutz. Among the recent political triumphs that these elites celebrated in the Broadmoors posh ballroom was the defeat this year of the Colorado tax hike to fix the states crumbling roads. After all, who needs adequate roads when you can arrive in private jets? This attitude of the Kochs privileged cohorts explains why the public is shut out of these candid sessions. A staffer for the Koch confab hailed such no-tax, no-roads policies as a renaissance of freedom. For the privileged, that is freedom to prosper at the expense of everyone else.

ALECs Scary Plan For Electing Your Senators
Reprinted with permission from AlterNet.
The New York Times and Washington Post reported that President Trump has had conversations with top officials about whether he could pardon himself and his family, and also suggested that the White House could be mounting an attack on the credibility of Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor leading the investigation into Russian influence on the 2016 campaign.
Trumps election integrity commission convened for the first time on Wednesday and he wasted no time assailing state election officials who have refused the panels unprecedented request for detailed voter data. The president alleged, darkly, that uncooperative states might have something to hide. One had to wonder what theyre worried about, Trump said. Theres something. There always is.
Then as the session concluded, an MSNBC reporter asked vice chairman Kris Kobach, Kansas Republican secretary of state, whether he believed, as Trump has suggested, that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 2.8 million votes because of voter fraud. We will probably never know the answer to that question, Kobach replied.

Open Burns, Ill Winds

RADFORD, VIRGINIA Shortly after dawn most weekdays, a warning siren rips across the flat, swift water of the New River running alongside the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Red lights warning away boaters and fishermen flash from the plant, the nations largest supplier of propellant for artillery and the source of explosives for almost every American bullet fired overseas.
Along the southern Virginia riverbank, piles of discarded contents from bullets, chemical makings from bombs, and raw explosives all used or left over from the manufacture and testing of weapons ingredients at Radford are doused with fuel and lit on fire, igniting infernos that can be seen more than a half a mile away. The burning waste is rich in lead, mercury, chromium and compounds like nitroglycerin and perchlorate, all known health hazards. The residue from the burning piles rises in a spindle of hazardous smoke, twists into the wind and, depending on the weather, sweeps toward the tens of thousands of residents in the surrounding towns.
