Having Sworn To Protect Social Security, Trump Is Scheming To Cut It

Nancy Altman May 25, 2019

Donald Trump’s recent budget proposal included billions of dollars in Social Security cuts. The proposed cuts were a huge betrayal of his campaign promise to protect our Social Security system. Fortunately for Social Security’s current and future beneficiaries, he has little chance of getting these cuts past the House of Representatives, which is controlled by Democrats.

So Trump and his budget director/chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, who has long been hostile to Social Security, are trying another tactic to cut our earned benefits. They are pursuing a long game to reach their goal. In a divide-and-conquer move, the focus is not Social Security. At least, not yet.

Last week, the Trump administration revealed that it is planning to employ the so-called chained Consumer Price Index (CPI) in a way that does not need congressional approval. “Chained CPI” might sound technical and boring, but anyone who has closely followed the Social Security debate knows better. It has long been proposed as a deceptive, hard-to-understand way to cut our earned Social Security benefits.

Trump plans to switch to the chained CPI to index the federal definition of poverty. If he succeeds, the impact will be that over time, fewer people will meet the government’s definition of poverty—even though in reality, they will not be any less poor. The definition is crucial to qualify for a variety of federal benefits, including Medicaid, as well as food and housing assistance. The announcement was written blandly about considering a variety of different measures, but anyone who knows the issue well can easily read the writing on the wall.

-snip-

If you want to forestall another fight over cutting Social Security through the chained CPI, call your members of Congress, write to your local paper, and tell your friends: No chained CPI! No chained CPI for our earned benefits! No chained CPI for the most vulnerable among us!

This quiet effort to embed the chained CPI is a fight Trump does not want to have, certainly in an election year. But it is one we will bring to him. Grassroots activism defeated the chained CPI before. This time it will be harder because Trump can substitute the chained CPI without legislation. That means we have to simply fight harder. If we stick together, we surely will win. And we must. All of our economic security depends on it.

Trump campaign views healthcare as a 2020 campaign weapon

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign believes he can turn Republicans’ biggest liability from last year’s congressional elections - the debate about the future of healthcare in America - into a winning issue for his reelection.

That would have appeared highly unlikely just months ago, when Democrats seized upon the issue of coverage for pre-existing medical conditions to capture control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Since then, the 2020 Democratic presidential field has been locked in a debate about how far to go to transform the U.S. healthcare system. Some candidates have suggested abolishing private insurance in favor of a single government-run plan, sometimes referred to as “Medicare for All,” while others favor more modest reforms.

Trump’s campaign is betting that whoever emerges with the Democratic nomination next year will have been forced to embrace a sweeping healthcare reform proposal that may spook moderate voters.

Trump uses farmer event to make each of his aides say how 'calm' he is

By Oliver Willis -
May 23, 2019

Trump is upset the world is mocking his meltdown, so he begged aides to say he was 'calm.'

Trump spoke at a Thursday White House event that was supposed to be about helping farmers — and managed to turn it into a bizarre public therapy session to soothe his hurt feelings about negative news coverage.

Trump has been widely criticized and mocked for petulantly shutting down negotiations over infrastructure with Democrats on Wednesday.

As farmers and other officials stood behind him, Trump called upon several of his White House underlings to reassure him that, in fact, he had been very "calm" during his meltdown the day before.

"I walked out, I was so calm, you all saw me minutes later, I was at a news conference, I was extremely calm," Trump said. He wasn't.

I really would like to know if the two "dudes" in the kooooooooboy hats are corporate farmers, and the "guy" in the red hat, how much money is / are they taking from the taxpayers to subsidize this bullshit of standing in that room looking like they would enable treason, which is happening......................from an asshole that should have had his ass spanked when he was younger....................for misbehaving.....................absolutely amazing.......................

Trump wants another $16 billion to bail out farmers he's bankrupting

By Dan Desai Martin -
May 23, 2019

The cost of Trump's disastrous trade war keeps going up, and taxpayers are paying the price.

Trump's costly trade war with China just got more expensive. Now he's planning to force taxpayers to spend another $16 billion to bail out farmers his policies are bankrupting.

On Thursday, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Purdue announced the new $16 billion bailout fund, which is in addition to a $12 billion bailout for farmers the Trump administration approved last year.

Because of Trump's failed trade war with China, farmers are seeing bankruptcies skyrocket, hitting the highest rates in a decade. Farmers are losing access to markets in China, one of America's largest trading partners, as Trump continues to escalate the trade war.

When it comes to bailing out farmers for Trump's bad decision-making, Purdue lied about where the money is coming from. On Thursday morning, Purdue falsely claimed "China's gonna pay for these" through tariffs imposed by Trump.

And the farmers in this article, did you vote for this asshole......................if you say yes, then maybe you should have read the books out on how this asshole "bankrupted" mom and pop operations in New Jersey, Florida and elsewhere.......................he is now at 28 billion in tax dollars through his fucking shell and pea game.........how do like his winning bullshit.............

Attorney General Barr posed for photos at Trump hotel with hate group leader

By Oliver Willis -
May 23, 2019

Trump's attorney general smiled as he posed with Brigitte Gabriel, a 'notorious anti-Muslim hate group leader.'

On Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr made yet another ethically dubious decision by posing for a picture in the lobby of Trump's D.C. hotel alongside Brigitte Gabriel, the leader of a major anti-Muslim hate group.

"I ran into Attorney General William Barr at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC," wrote Gabriel in a post alongside the photo. "The Trump is where all the best people come together!"

Barr has already proven a couple of times over that he's a Trump lackey rather than an independent law enforcement agent. But posing with someone like Gabriel takes things another step further.

Gabriel is a vocal Trump ally who's been described by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a "notorious anti-Muslim hate group leader." She's also the head of ACT for America, the "the largest anti-Muslim group in the U.S." that "pushes wild anti-Muslim conspiracy theories, denigrates American Muslims and deliberately conflates mainstream and radical Islam," according to the SPLC.

And then the country has a no show asshole Mitch McConnell confirmed Federalist Society POS consorting with ACT for America racists bigoted organization ( and he is now in charge of immigration stuff................... )..................instead of honoring subpoena and requirement to be questioned at a committee meeting on his criminal intent to break the law ................

California agencies fought fires on federal land. Now Trump won't pay in full

The US Forest Service audited the reimbursement sent by the state and is withholding $9m, saying they needed more documentation

As California prepares to enter wildfire season, the Trump administration is holding back millions of dollars in requested reimbursement to local fire agencies for battling wildfires on federal lands last year.

After the most destructive and expensive season on record, California issued a $72m reimbursement request for local firefighting efforts on federal lands. Rather than reimburse the local agencies in full, the US forest service audited the agreement that made this exchange possible and is now withholding $9m.

“A local fire department doesn’t budget to go help the US forest service,” said Brian Marshall, fire chief for the state office of emergency services. “You pay it up front, expecting reimbursement. If you don’t get the money, a fire chief’s job could be in jeopardy because then they’re operating in the red and the elected officials start asking the tough questions. And that’s unacceptable.”

According to the forest service, the audit was prompted by a 2017 letter from the director of the state office of emergency services that criticized the forest service’s reimbursement practices.

North Carolina GOP Looks To Ram Through Anti-Abortion Law

By Cameron Joseph
May 23, 2019 6:00 am

North Carolina state Rep. Sydney Batch (D) had planned to take off work this week as she recovered from a recent mastectomy procedure to treat her breast cancer. Instead, she spent it at the statehouse, making sure Republicans couldn’t come up with enough votes to pass new abortion-related restrictions into law.

North Carolina Republicans have been pushing to pass a “born alive” bill that would make it illegal for doctors not to help babies that somehow survived abortions. They’re just a handful of votes away from being able to override a recent veto from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D). Republicans put the bill on the legislative calendar for Monday. When it became clear they didn’t have the votes, they decided to shelve it and force Batch and the rest of the legislature to return day after day until they have the numbers.

“I was hoping to take three weeks off to recover, but unfortunately I did not have that ability,” Batch told TPM about the GOP’s latest effort. “When I realized that Monday, [Republicans were] planning to hold the vote it was worth physical sacrifice and pain to come in to vote. It was extremely important for me to vote.”

Her presence was needed. Republicans already overrode Cooper’s recent veto in the state Senate, and believe they are just three or four votes away from being able to do the same in the state House. If enough Democrats hadn’t shown up, they would have been able to ram through the legislation, since all their members attended session on Monday — a rarity in a chamber where members on both sides regularly miss votes.

Trump's EPA is 'cooking the books' to justify its attack on clean air rules

Experts call it a “deeply cynical strategy” that puts lives at risk.

Kyla Mandel
May 23, 2019, 9:00 am

Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working to distort the way it measures the benefits of some of the agency’s most impactful policies, regulations that safeguard human health by limiting air pollution. The primary beneficiary of such distortion? The coal industry.

When the government evaluates the health and financial benefits of clean air, the calculation typically incorporates the number of lives saved and the scale of reduced health impacts thanks to reducing pollution — also known as “co-benefits.” Incorporating these factors into a cost-benefit analysis forms the very foundation upon which many environmental protections are based.

But now, experts warn the EPA is opening the door to industry challenges to these clean air rules by changing the way it evaluates the long-accepted science on the risk of particulate matter — microscopic particles polluting the air that are linked to increased heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory disease.

The agency may also be laying the groundwork, experts say, for using these “biased and misleading” calculations in other policy contexts. That fear was stoked by a new EPA memo released this week, ushering in a formal process to change the way the agency calculates its cost-benefit analysis across a slew of issues, from water pollution to pesticides.

Theresa May clings to power as Brexit gambit backfires

Guy Faulconbridge, Kate Holton 6 Min Read

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May was clinging on to power on Thursday after her final Brexit gambit backfired, overshadowing a European election that has shown a United Kingdom still riven by division over its EU divorce.

May’s departure will deepen the Brexit crisis as a new leader is likely to want a more decisive split with the European Union, raising the chances of a confrontation with the bloc and an election which could usher in a socialist government.

In such a fluid situation, the world’s fifth largest economy faces an array of options including an orderly exit with a deal, a no-deal exit, an election or a second referendum which could ultimately reverse the 2016 decision to leave the EU.

May, who won the top job in the turmoil which followed the 2016 referendum on EU membership, has repeatedly failed to get parliament’s approval for the divorce deal she pitched as a way to heal the Brexit divisions of the country.

Tonight I decided to watch a little of Chuck Todd and caught and watch at least a 5 million a year

person interview one John Kennedy from Louisiana.

During the discussion and listening to the rant from both of them, I heard Kennedy state about him putting judges on the bench..................yes he and his fellow fucking right wing POS's and (Leo Leonard) are packing the court, in fact Toodles didn't even have the comprehension to ask this other POS how he could vote to put one Wendy Vitter on the bench, knowing that her husband has taken Russian money to be placed in Kentucky and if it was some strange coincidence that she is on the bench.

And how Toodles could not ask do you support a woman's right to privacy, and if he, Kennedy thought it was right that Vitter, thinks that a woman's right to privacy is just plain bullshit and settled law from 1973 should be overturned in his state.
And that in his state they are getting ready to pass a bill to attack doctors and other people when in comes to that privacy!

But nope Toodles, let Kennedy do his rant, and say if the House of Representatives is going to Impeach his enabling criminal enterprise leader, then they (Pelosi and our team) basically should either piss and get off the pot....................my question to Kennedy would have been from the point is do you support lawbreaking from Barr, Mnuchin and your boss Moscow Mitch, since he after all violated the Constitution when it came to Merrick Garland..........................and to let the woman in his state know if he has there back when it comes to privacy on National TV, because Vitter sure has the hell doesn't have one iota.

https://www.theroot.com/senate-oks-trump-s-latest-federal-judge-pick-despite-de-1834828794

But nope, the country got at least a 5 million a year individual so called talking head giving this Kennedy asshole a pass.........................
