NEW YORK (Reuters) - A man who lives in a New York suburb and works in Manhattan tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the total confirmed cases in the state to two, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old man had an underlying respiratory illness and is hospitalized, Cuomo said at a news conference. He added that the patient had not traveled to countries considered the epicenter of the outbreak but had visited Miami recently.

Cuomo disclosed the second case after an Orthodox Jewish school in New York City canceled classes on Tuesday to allow for precautionary measures after a suspected case of coronavirus turned up within its community.

Airlines face worsening coronavirus impact, European bosses warn

BUSINESS NEWS MARCH 3, 2020 / 5:00 AM / UPDATED 14 MINUTES AGO

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The worst is still to come for the airline industry in terms of economic damage from the coronavirus outbreak, European bosses warned on Tuesday, but they predicted that travel demand could stabilise in the coming weeks.

Coronavirus has hit demand, forcing airlines to cancel flights and cut costs, and ask governments and regulators for help as they battle to get to grips with what they hope will be short-term, rather than long-term, disruption.

The heads of Europe’s biggest carriers discussed the impact of the epidemic at an annual industry conference. They included Ryanair (RYA.I) chief Michael O’Leary; Willie Walsh, boss of British Airways-owner IAG; and easyJet’s EZY.L Johan Lundgren.

“We have seen a drop in demand when you look particularly in the northern part of Italy, but that has also spilled over to the other parts of the network,” easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said.

Italy has suffered the biggest outbreak of the illness in Europe.

GOP senators ask for more CDC funds after voting previously to cut them

By Dan Desai Martin -March 2, 2020 3:25 PM

Many lawmakers now calling for additional CDC funds to address the coronavirus outbreak voted in 2017 to repeal Obamacare, which would have cut hundreds of millions from the agency's budget to fight public health crises.

Several Republican senators facing tough reelection races are now clamoring for more federal funds to deal with the new coronavirus outbreak.

But just a few years ago, those same lawmakers voted to repeal Obamacare, which would have slashed $1 billion in funds for the CDC's Prevention and Public Health Fund, including hundreds of millions set aside "for detecting and responding to infectious diseases and other public health threats."

Last week, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) said that $2.5 billion proposed by the Trump administration to deal with the coronavirus outbreak "may just be a down payment."

Earlier in the month, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) wrote a letter to congressional appropriators requesting "sufficient funding for both current and potential future efforts" to deal with outbreaks.

GOP lawmaker: Senate should be able to ignore impeachments it doesn't like

By Josh Israel -March 2, 2020 5:15 PM

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) said the chamber should have no responsibility to take up trials when the House submits articles of impeachment.

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) wants to change Senate rules to make it so that an impeachment trial is no longer automatic when the House impeaches a president. His reasoning? Trials "derail Senate legislative activity."

Cramer announced on Monday that he had submitted some "final thoughts on the impeachment trial" of Donald Trump for the congressional record. In his lengthy statement, he first reiterated his belief that the House of Representatives did not prove its case against Trump.

Next, Cramer suggested a reevaluation of current rules that require immediate trials if the House votes for articles of impeachment, especially when they are — in his view — "entirely partisan."

"While I agree such an enormous responsibility should elicit our undivided attention, it seems illogical to automatically grant primacy to impeachment articles, especially those as flawed as the ones presented by House Democrats," he wrote.

Medical experts have to tell Trump that flu vaccine won't work on coronavirus

By Oliver Willis -March 3, 2020 10:10 AM

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases quickly shut down the suggestion during a meeting at the White House.

During a meeting with pharmaceutical executives at the White House on Monday, Donald Trump asked whether the existing flu vaccine could be used to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, immediately rejected the proposal.

From the March 2 White House meeting:

DONALD TRUMP: But the same vaccine could not work? You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that would have an impact or much of an impact on corona?

DR. ANTHONY FAUCI: No. Probably not.

TRUMP: Probably not.

The flu and COVID-19, the disease caused by the strain of coronavirus that originated in China, are completely different afflictions. In fact, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes, the flu vaccine is not even able to prevent all the different strains of the flu itself which is why it changes year to year.

Sen. Johnson Pushes For Subpoenas In Ukraine-Hunter Biden Probe

By Josh Kovensky

It still hasn’t ended.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) sent a letter March 1 indicating that he wants to begin issuing subpoenas in his investigation of the same debunked allegations that featured in President Trump’s impeachment.

So the Senate’s Ukraine-Hunter Biden investigation continues, as does former Vice President Joe Biden’s candidacy, which received a weekend boost with a victory in South Carolina and with South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg’s exit from the race.

The upshot of the letter is that Sen. Johnson has been fighting to issue subpoenas to former Ukraine embassy in D.C. staffer and Rudy Giuliani buddy Andrii Telizhenko, and to Blue Star Strategies, a D.C.-based lobbying firm that Burisma hired in 2016 to burnish the gas company’s image.

The missive reveals that Sen. Johnson may be days from sending subpoenas in the probe, saying that he plans to hold a vote to issue the demands for documents and testimony.

How Bloomberg Trashed Public Education in New York

I’m an art teacher. Mike’s policies gutted my school. During those years, I was lucky to have enough copy paper for my students to draw on.

Mike Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City now running for President, often brags about being one of the most prolific charter school creators in the United States. Bloomberg says he “absolutely” intends to expand charters in his federal education plan. This is a serious threat to public education, especially given Bloomberg’s history of using his fortune to shape policy.

Since 2013, Bloomberg has been one of the nation’s biggest donors to candidates and ballot initiatives promoting charters and vouchers, giving more than $4 million to candidates in New Jersey, Colorado, Minnesota, and Louisiana, often through “dark money” PACs. In California, Bloomberg spent a whopping $39 million, backing both Democrats and Republicans who support charters. In Pennsylvania, he gave $6 million to pro-charter incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, who won re-election with a narrow 1.5 percent edge, and ended up casting a critical vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

New York City teachers are vocal critics of Bloomberg, who not only used public money for school privatization but usurped the power of elected community school boards as the state granted Bloomberg “mayoral control” of New York City schools in 2002.

Bloomberg proceeded to appoint corporate attorney Joel Klein as head of New York City’s education department. Klein began a "test-and-punish" regime, which led to the closure of 150 schools and earned him an 80 percent disapproval rating with teachers.

The Disappearing Songs of Hawaii's Endangered Native Birds

New research finds that different species of honeycreepers are singing the same songs. What does that mean for survival?

DANIELLE BEURTEAUX

This piece was originally published in Undark and appears here as part of our Climate Desk Partnership.

The sounds of Kauai’s forests are changing. Thirty years ago, David Kuhn could hear a dawn chorus and identify the many different birds that lived on the Hawaiian island. But more recently, Kuhn, a wildlife recordist based on Kauai, began noticing that not only are the forests becoming quieter, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to tell the remaining birds apart by their songs.

Investigating further, in 2014 he recorded a native honeycreeper, an akekee, singing the songs of other endangered honeycreeper species. “That confirmed my confusion up to that point,” says Kuhn. “I thought, what the heck, these guys are starting to sound alike.”

Kuhn’s discovery prompted research into the plight of three of Kauai’s six remaining honeycreeper species: the anianiau, the Kauai amakihi, and the akekee. His hunch was correct—the three species now sing much more similar songs, with less complex vocal signals, due to the decreasing size of their populations, especially among mature birds that pass on song repertoires to younger offspring. It’s the first time this type of behavior among endangered birds has been recorded, says Kristina Paxton, lead author of a paper on honeycreepers published last year in the journal Royal Society Open Science, and a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
