Futures plunge on virus fears as California declares emergency

Source: Reuters

BUSINESS NEWS MARCH 5, 2020 / 8:10 AM / UPDATED 22 MINUTES AGO

Medha Singh 3 MIN READ

The S&P 500 had ended 4% higher on Wednesday as Joe Biden’s near sweep at the Democratic presidential primaries distracted investors from the widening spread of the pathogen in the United States.

But fears about economic growth returned to the forefront as the U.S. death toll from the flu-like virus rose to 11 and California declared a state of emergency after the first U.S. fatality outside Washington state.

The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved an $8.3 billion bill on Wednesday to combat the spread of the outbreak.

A sales warning by the International Air Transport Association that the epidemic could hit revenue at passenger airlines by up to $113 billion sent shares in American Airlines Group Inc, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines down more than 3%

There are actually two coronaviruses -- which will make developing a vaccine harder: report

Published 1 min ago on March 4, 2020
By Matthew Chapman

While researchers are already hard at work on developing a coronavirus vaccine, experts say it is unlikely to be ready for at least a year.

One of the reasons for that might be that it turns out, technically, there are two strains of coronavirus — and people can be infected with either, or even both simultaneously.

That’s according to a new study reported by The Telegraph.

“Researchers at Peking University’s School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, discovered the virus has evolved into two major lineages — dubbed ‘L’ and ‘S’ types,” stated the report. “The older ‘S-type’ appears to be milder and less infectious, while the ‘L-type’ which emerged later, spreads quickly and currently accounts for around 70 per cent [sic] of cases.”

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump lashed out at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for criticizing his Supreme Court appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh — and suggested that a Republican doing the same thing would be “arrested or impeached”:

Exclusive: Lufthansa to ground 150 aircraft due to coronavirus

Source: Reuters

BUSINESS NEWS MARCH 4, 2020 / 8:55 AM / UPDATED 23 MINUTES AGO

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) will ground 150 aircraft out of its total fleet of around 770 due to the coronavirus, the German airline said on Wednesday, confirming what company sources had told Reuters earlier.

“We are dynamically adjusting our plans to reflect extraordinary circumstances,” a Lufthansa spokesman said, adding that 25 of the 150 grounded aircraft are long-haul jets.

Last week Lufthansa said it had grounded 23 long-haul aircraft.

European airline bosses warned on Tuesday that the worst is still to come for the airline industry in terms of economic damage from the coronavirus outbreak, but they predicted that travel demand could stabilise in the coming weeks.

U.S. carries out air strike on Taliban, calls for halt to 'needless attacks'

KABUL (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday carried out its first air strike on Taliban fighters in Afghanistan since the two sides signed a troop withdrawal agreement on Saturday.

A U.S. forces spokesman confirmed the incident in southern Helmand province, hours after President Donald Trump spoke by phone with chief Taliban negotiator Mullah Baradar Akhund on Tuesday, the first known conversation between a U.S. leader and a top Taliban official.

The Taliban fighters “were actively attacking an (Afghan National Security Forces) checkpoint. This was a defensive strike to disrupt the attack,” said Colonel Sonny Leggett, a spokesman for the U.S. Forces in Afghanistan in a tweet.

He said Washington was committed to peace but would defend Afghan forces if needed.

Supreme Court takes up anti-abortion law it struck down in 2016

By Associated Press -March 4, 2020 9:11 AM

It's the Supreme Court's first big abortion case in the Trump era.

The Supreme Court is taking up the first major abortion case of the Trump era, an election-year look at a Louisiana dispute that could reveal how willing the more conservative court is to roll back abortion rights.

The outcome could have huge consequences at a time when several states have passed laws, being challenged in the courts, that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks.

The justices on Wednesday are examining a Louisiana law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. A federal judge found that just one of Louisiana's three abortion clinics would remain open if the law is allowed to take effect.

It is similar to one in Texas that the Supreme Court struck down in 2016. Since then, though, Donald Trump was elected president and he appointed two justices, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, who have shifted the court to the right. Even with those two additions to the court, Chief Justice John Roberts almost certainly holds the deciding vote.

We're The Closest We've Ever Been To Campaign Finance Reform

By Adam Eichen

This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis.

The movement for major campaign finance reform is closer to overhauling our system than at any point in the previous four decades.

Last year, the House of Representatives passed HR 1, the For The People Act, an omnibus pro-democracy bill that included public financing of congressional elections — the most effective way to democratize political influence. Though the bill languishes in the Senate thanks to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), every major Democratic presidential candidate has now pledged to pass public financing if elected.

In other words, with a change in control of government, meaningful money in politics reform is finally within reach. But underneath this progress is a growing split among reformers over the details of a federal public financing system. And the stakes of this debate could have radical implications for the future of democracy.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who has centered her 2020 presidential bid on an anti-corruption platform, has endorsed a small donor matching system in which all donations under $200 are matched at a rate of 6-to-1. That means that a $10 donation becomes $70 dollars.

Such a plan is largely based on that of New York City, which has boasted a successful public financing system for decades. It was also the model included in the For The People Act.

Trump Really Wants Warren To Drop Out...For The Sake Of Her 'Friendship' With Bernie

By Cristina Cabrera

March 4, 2020 8:24 a.m.

It’s Wednesday morning, and President Donald Trump is doling out his takes on the primary race in the form of bizarre fanfiction, particularly with regards to Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Trump started off with his typical attempt to sow division between Sanders’ (I-VT) supporters and the Democratic establishment by claiming the latter “CRUSHED” the Vermont senator. Then he dragged Warren for not dropping out.

“Even the fact that Elizabeth Warren stayed in the race was devastating to Bernie and allowed Sleepy Joe to unthinkably win Massachusetts,” Trump tweeted. “It was a perfect storm, with many good states remaining for Joe!”

The (definitely good faith) indignation on Sanders’ behalf continued several minutes later.

“So selfish for Elizabeth Warren to stay in the race,” Trump tweeted. “She has Zero chance of even coming close to winning, but hurts Bernie badly. So much for their wonderful liberal friendship.”
