A Congressman skipped the coronavirus relief vote -- he went home to tell seniors to blame the media

Published 4 hours ago on March 20, 2020
By Pro Publica

Alaska’s lone member of the U.S. House, Rep. Don Young, skipped a vote early Saturday on a federal coronavirus relief package. Turns out, he was in Alaska, where hours earlier he had told a gathering of senior citizens that dangers posed by the coronavirus pandemic — the “beer virus,” he called it — have been overblown because of media-fueled hysteria.

Young isn’t the only politician to downplay the threat posed by the virus. Over the weekend, the governor of Oklahoma tweeted a photo of himself eating dinner with his children at a busy Oklahoma City restaurant. He deleted the tweet and subsequently has advised the state’s residents not to congregate in groups of 10 or more and to pick up food at restaurants instead of eating in.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice on Monday told residents, “For crying out loud, go to the grocery stores. If you want to go to Bob Evans and eat, go to Bob Evans and eat.” He subsequently decided to ban eating at restaurants.

And Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Getting coronavirus is not a death sentence except for maybe no more than 3.4 percent of our population (and) I think probably far less.” He said he wants people to keep the virus in perspective.

Ron fucking Johnson...........................if people die in your state because of your malfeasance, right along with the asshole from Alaska, and also the asshole from West Virginia, maybe they should be charged with Manslaughter............ after all they are in essence ripping off the tax payer and getting paid to be completely incompetent and having no fucking empathy ...................

'An utter disgrace': GOP stimulus plan would cut taxes for corporations

while denying benefits to poorest

Published 2 hours ago on March 20, 2020
By Jake Johnson, Common Dreams

“Senate Republicans are using the COVID-19 pandemic to cut corporate taxes again and stop you from getting paid sick leave.”

“Heartless,” “cruel,” and “appalling” were just some of the adjectives progressive critics and analysts used late Thursday to describe the Senate GOP’s newly unveiled trillion-dollar economic stimulus package which—by design—would completely deny direct cash payments to the poorest Americans while cutting taxes for corporations, dishing out tens of billions in bailout funds to major industries, and restricting paid leave benefits that were just signed into law this week.

“The Senate GOP package is an utter disgrace,” tweeted Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO. “It gives free money to corporations, ignores the health crisis, and does nothing to keep people working or help the unemployed. The labor movement will oppose this Main St. bailout of Wall St. with everything we have.”

“I don’t know how else to describe this but wantonly wicked. The poorest get zero; low-income households get half of what middle-income households get; and a kid counts for 40% of an adult.”
—Daniel Hemel, University of Chicago Law School

The Republican plan, released as the economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak continues to worsen, would provide means-tested cash payments of up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child, with the precise amount dependent upon 2018 tax filings.

FUCK this shit.........................I want fucking mortgage relief, renter relief, student debt relief, paid sick leave, credit card relief, car payment relief, these fucking corporations got a 1.5 trillion tax scam.....................this libertarian bullshit is what it is libertarian bullshit................and then to top it all off a fucking MEANS TEST.......................did the corporations and the oligarchs get a means test fuck no...................

Kansas GOP official says lack of Chinese people has spared his state from coronavirus

Published 1 min ago on March 20, 2020
By Brad Reed

A Republican official in Kansas this week said that his state has been spared the worst of the coronavirus pandemic so far because it doesn’t have as many Chinese people as other states and countries around the world.

The Kansas City Star reports that Marvin Rodriguez, the Republican Chairman of the Riley County Commissioners, said that Kansas’s problems with the virus would be much worse if it had a large number of Chinese immigrants like they have in Italy.

“There’s a garment industry and a lot of Chinese,” Rodriguez said of Italy. “If we were like Italy, we’d have it already.”

Rodriguez also seemed to suggest that he believed China intentionally put out the virus.

I just wonder if he knows where the 1918 Spanish Flue came from.................

While it’s unlikely that the “Spanish Flu” originated in Spain, scientists are still unsure of its source. France, China and Britain have all been suggested as the potential birthplace of the virus, as has the United States, where the first known case was reported at a military base in Kansas on March 11, 1918. Researchers have also conducted extensive studies on the remains of victims of the pandemic, but they have yet to discover why the strain that ravaged the world in 1918 was so lethal.

Coronavirus: A story of blatant GOP corruption and irresponsibility

Published 1 min ago on March 20, 2020
By Heather Digby Parton, Salon- Commentary

As we watch states around the country start to shut down, one by one, as if the lights were all going out across the country, there is plenty of discussion about President Trump’s bungled response and his compulsion to deliver happy talk and disinformation to the American people. Now that he is unable to hold his beloved rallies and has taken over the daily coronavirus briefing, the opportunities for the latter are unfortunately multiplying. His performances before the cameras every day are getting more and more surreal.

On Thursday, Trump came before the country touting a supposed wonder drug that he promised looked like a major breakthrough. (In fact, it’s a standard antimalarial medication.) As usual, the experts had to walk that back later, saying that it’s just one of many drugs being considered as a possible treatment but they won’t know for months. Reports coming from within the administration confirm that the bungling continues unabated. Between Jared’ Kushner’s “shadow task force” and turf wars among the various players, it seems nobody really knows who’s running the show. It certainly isn’t Trump, who is clearly spending most of his time watching Fox News and the stock market ticker.

There was a time when we might have expected Republicans in Congress to wake up from their stupor and exert some leadership in the face of a president’s overwhelming incompetence in such a crisis. Sure, maybe they felt it was no big deal that he engaged in a criminal cover-up from the moment he took his oath, or that he extorted a foreign leader to smear his political opponent.

Maybe it doesn’t mean anything to them that he’s pretty much dismantled the executive branch as a functional part of government and completely destroyed America’s reputation abroad. Assaulting the press, nepotism, rampant corruption and intentionally dividing the country into warring camps obviously aren’t things that keep them up at night.

Republican Jim Inhofe dumped up to $450,000 in stock -- the fourth GOP senator implicated in scandal:

Published 3 mins ago on March 19, 2020By Bob Brigham

The GOP Senate Caucus faced a massive scandal on Thursday after multiple GOP senators revealed in public filings that they had sold large stock holdings after private briefings on the coronavirus scandal.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) have all be implicated in the scandal.

Now conservative Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe has also been caught up, after reporting he sold in late February.

There have been calls for the implicated lawmakers to resign from office over the scandal.

Coronavirus forces U.S. lawmakers to overcome divide

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With coronavirus cases reported in all 50 U.S. states, lawmakers in Washington are working to limit the economic damage from the epidemic. To do so, they must overcome another problem - partisan gridlock.

The Republican-controlled Senate is due to take up a multi-billion dollar aid package on Wednesday that bolsters safety-net programs and provides free testing for the respiratory disease.

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed the package by an overwhelming bipartisan margin on Saturday.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is urging his colleagues to approve it quickly, despite their qualms.

“Gag and vote for it,” he said at a news conference on Tuesday.

That may be difficult for some Senate Republicans, who worry that its sick-leave provisions could heap costs on small businesses. Others have objected that it does not cover those who work at corporations that employ more than 500 people.

“I’m pretty concerned with the House bill making a bad situation worse in our economy,” Republican Senator James Lankford said on Tuesday.

Hey Lankford.................a bad situation worse.........your a fucking idiot, do you realize that some of these "small business" have loans from banks that got a 1.5 trillion tax cut package....................my idea asshole, is to suspend loans like mortgage , renters, student debt, small businesses, credit card and car payments for 6 months, give people paid sick leave, health check-ups ........................whats your fucking libertarian plan, you get a taxpayer funded health plan....... .........have the Hamm family fortune in your state of OK, get another tax break because there fracking business is using junk bonds to stay afloat .................

Russia deploying coronavirus disinformation to sow panic in West, EU document says

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Russian media have deployed a “significant disinformation campaign” against the West to worsen the impact of the coronavirus, generate panic and sow distrust, according to a European Union document seen by Reuters.

The Kremlin denied the allegations on Wednesday, saying they were unfounded and lacked common sense.

The EU document said the Russian campaign, pushing fake news online in English, Spanish, Italian, German and French, uses contradictory, confusing and malicious reports to make it harder for the EU to communicate its response to the pandemic.

“A significant disinformation campaign by Russian state media and pro-Kremlin outlets regarding COVID-19 is ongoing,” said the nine-page internal document, dated March 16, using the name of the disease that can be caused by the coronavirus.

Coronavirus hits Florida economy in threat to Trump's re-election hopes

KISSIMMEE, Florida (Reuters) - Since the coronavirus outbreak hit Florida this month, Uber driver Nelson Aliaga has lost a third of his business.

But by dismissing for weeks the danger posed by the virus, President Donald Trump did not respond quickly enough to the crisis, said Aliaga, a Republican who voted for Trump in 2016.

Aliaga, who makes a living shuttling tourists around the Orlando area, is now leaning toward voting for Joe Biden in the November presidential election, if the former vice president becomes the Democratic nominee.

“I’m pretty sure I’m not going to vote for him,” Aliaga said of Trump as he stood outside a polling station near Orlando as his son, a Democrat, voted in Tuesday’s Democratic nominating contest. Biden won the state in a landslide victory over Senator Bernie Sanders.

Boeing leads Wall Street slump as corporate damage grows

Source: Reuters

Boeing Co (BA.N) took another big hit, falling 16.1% as the planemaker called for a $60 billion bailout for aerospace manufacturers facing the pain of an extended collapse in global travel.

The S&P 1500 airlines index .SPCOMAIR dropped 13% while hotel operators Hilton Worldwide Holdings (HLT.N), Marriott International Inc (MAR.O) and online agency Expedia (EXPE.O) were among the top fallers on the S&P 500 .SPX.

The benchmark slipped 3.82%, inching close to the 7% threshold that triggers another 15-minute halt - a familiar feature of two weeks of huge losses which have shattered Wall Street’s longest ever bull run.

“We’re just in panic mode here,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities in New York.
