Koch Troops Queasy About Killing State and Local Tax Deduction to Fund Tax Breaks for the Rich

The Koch brothers and their network of billionaire political spenders have made their marching orders to Republicans in Congress clear this year -- kill the Affordable Care Act and pass sweeping new tax breaks for corporations and the top 1% or don't come looking to us to bankroll your 2018 campaigns.

But in order to execute those orders, lawmakers may have to pay a steep political price by eliminating health benefits and tax breaks that benefit millions of middle income voters as well as state and local governments.

Pouring SALT Into the Wound

The Trump tax plan is already taking a pounding as a gift to the super rich and to Trump himself. The elimination of a popular tax deduction throws salt into the wound.

That explains why the troika of institutions that make up the Koch's state-based political network -- Americans for Prosperity, the State Policy Network, and the American Legislative Exchange Council -- are muted or silent on the proposed elimination of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction in the midst of the biggest push to overhaul federal taxes in almost 40 years.

Report: Trump Told Tribal Leaders To Just Do It And Ignore Drilling Laws

By MATT SHUHAM Published NOVEMBER 6, 2017 10:28 AM

President Donald Trump in June reportedly told tribal leaders to simply drill for energy resources on their land, regardless of regulations that would prevent them from immediately doing so, Axios reported Sunday.

Citing one unnamed source in the room during a meeting between Trump and Native American tribal leaders in June, and another unnamed source who confirmed the account, Axios reported that the tribal leaders told Trump that “there were regulatory barriers preventing them from getting at their energy.”

The President reportedly replied: “But now it’s me. The government’s different now. Obama’s gone; and we’re doing things differently here.”

“So what I’m saying is, just do it,” Trump said, according to Axios.

The President reportedly continued after a pause, addressing a meeting attendee: “Chief, chief, what are they going to do? Once you get it out of the ground are they going to make you put it back in there? I mean, once it’s out of the ground it can’t go back in there. You’ve just got to do it. I’m telling you, chief, you’ve just got to do it.”

By NICOLE LAFOND Published NOVEMBER 6, 2017 2:33 PM

Tom Steyer wants President Trump to be impeached. Fox News decided to impeach his new ad instead.

On the same day that Fox News first ran an advertisement funded by Steyer, a Democratic mega-donor, President Donald Trump tweeted about Steyer, calling him “wacky” and “totally unhinged.”

Just four days later, the outlet stopped playing the advertisement. “Due to the strong negative reaction to their ad by our viewers, we could not in good conscience take their money,” Jack Abernethy, Fox News co-president, said in a statement obtained by TPM on Monday.

Steyer, through his attorneys, said he was not given an explanation for the cancellation of the advertisement.

The world is keeping track of U.S. gun deaths following Texas shooting even if Trump isnt

Source: Think Progress

After a Sunday shooting that left 26 people dead in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, President Donald Trump’s response followed the script of his previous responses to such incidents: These incidents happen because of the shooter’s “evil” character or “mental illness,” and that they are not related to U.S. gun laws.

Trump, currently on a four-country tour of Asia, was in Japan when news of suspected shooter Devin Patrick Kelly’s deadly rampage broke. Agence France Presse reported that this is all he had to say about it on Monday before pivoting to talking about reshaping U.S. trade agreements with Japan:

Trump called the ‘horrific shooting’ an ‘act of evil,’ ordering flags be flown half-staff at the White House and federal buildings. ‘Our hearts are broken but in dark times – and these are dark times – such as these, Americans do what they do best: we pull together,’ he said. Though he said ‘it’s a little bit soon to go into it’ regarding calls for gun control, the president promised his administration’s ‘full support’ for the investigation.

The [U.K.-based] Independent, meanwhile, incredulously reported that the response to the shooting by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was to encourage people to start bringing guns to church. The piece also noted that “more Americans have died in firearm-related incidents since 1968 than in all wars in US history. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.5 million US citizens have died as a result of guns in the last 49 years.” It added: “Around 1.2 million Americans have been killed in conflicts in US history, NBC reported, citing data from the Department of Veterans Affairs and a database on iCasualties.org.”

Meet Trump's Anti-Worker Labor Department Nominees

Wednesday, November 01, 2017
By Michael Arria, Truthout | News Analysis

On October 18, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee advanced a number of Trump labor picks to the full Senate, where they will likely be confirmed by the GOP-controlled body.

While Trump's labor efforts have received little attention from the mainstream media, the administration has effectively begun to chip away at the few protections which still exist for workers and increase the already expansive power of business. Earlier this year, Trump killed an Obama-era rule that would have given millions of people a raise. The action came just a couple months after the administration moved to tilt the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) back to a Republican majority via the selection of two union-busting nominees. The labor nominees currently making their way through the Senate fit the same pattern, portending an even harsher climate for workers in the years to come.

Mattis, Tillerson Want Blank Check to Wage Illegal War

Saturday, November 04, 2017
By Marjorie Cohn, Truthout | News Analysis

Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on October 30 that the Trump administration has all the legal authority it needs to kill people anywhere in the world. But just in case Congress wishes to update its old Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF), Mattis and Tillerson told them how to do it: Write a blank check to the president.

The October 4 killings of four US soldiers on a "routine training mission" in Niger brought the committee's hearing into sharper focus. It turns out the presence of these troops in Niger was unlawful.

Mattis claimed the four dead US soldiers were just there on a train-and-advise mission. "I think it was reasonable to think they could go out there and train these [Niger] troops without the idea they're going into direct combat; but" he admitted, "that's not a complete answer. I need to wait until I get the investigation to fully appraise it."

Derek Gannon, a former Green Beret, said, "[US military involvement in Africa] is called Low Intensity Irregular Warfare, yet technically, it's not considered war by the Pentagon. But," he added, "warfare is warfare to me."

The GOP Is Proposing a 250 Percent Tax Hike on Millions of Americans

By David Cay Johnson / DC Report November 2, 2017, 1:28 PM GMT

The GOP just declared war on the strivers who start their own businesses.

Or to put it another way: The nice young couple who just opened their own independent coffee shop around the corner will likely be hit with a huge tax increase—as much as 250%—while the corporation that operates thousands of coffee shops all around the world is getting its taxes cut 43%.

The complicated new bill (remember when the GOP promised tax simplicity?) also lavishes federal tax favors on rich individuals and on those who live in low tax states.

No wonder the GOP developed the nearly 500-page tax bill in secret. Had the public’s business been conducted in public, this bill simply would not exist. But it may become law because, if there is anything we know about Washington in the age of Trump, it is that our elected leaders don’t listen to us, they listen to the political donor class, and in Trump’s case, to those advisers he says reside in his head.

Gerrymander 5k: run highlights absurdity of Republican redistricting

Runners taking part in a 5km race in a small city in North Carolina on Saturday afternoon could have been forgiven for feeling dizzy, as they followed a zig-zag course that took them, literally, all around the houses.

The event was intended as a live demonstration of the absurdity and insidiousness of the way voting boundaries have been re-drawn – or gerrymandered – in Asheville, a liberal town at the western end of the state.

The head-spinning route of the “Gerrymander 5k” turned sharp corners and went forward and back on itself, snaking through town and wriggling along barely populated streets and odd blocks with no sidewalks.

-snip-

After Barack Obama won the White House for the Democrats in 2008, Republicans raised massive election war chests. In 2010, they duly won control of the House of Representatives and many state legislatures.

State legislatures have the power to redraw electoral boundaries every 10 years, to coincide with the national census. Many Republican-controlled statehouses took advantage of the 2010 census and fast-emerging, house-by-house mapping software to reshape electoral districts, packing opposition voters into fewer seats or, as in Asheville, dividing and diluting them with a majority of Republicans.

“North Carolina is particularly known for gerrymandering,” said Alana Pierce, president of the League of Women Voters of Asheville-Buncombe County, which organized the 5k run.
