Somebody ought to write a self-help book for Republican politicians called “How to Profit from the Coming Trump Apocalypse.” Although, come to think of it, they’re doing pretty well at that already.
The newspapers have been filled with stories of Trump’s tense relationship with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. And Trump’s escalating war of words with North Korea is making everyone else tense, as the planet learns more about the man with the nuclear codes.
A Google search for the words “Trump unstable” yields more than 10 million hits. A search on “Trump” and “mental health” returns more than 28 million results, many of them reviews of a new book entitled “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President.”
Spoiler alert: They’re worried. So are the Trump allies who were interviewed without attribution for this genuinely frightening Vanity Fair article.
But, while the world obsesses about the president’s personality, few people are talking about the systemic failures of democracy that made him president in the first place. And while we’re distracted by Trump’s theatricality, Republicans in Congress are busy robbing working Americans of their scant remaining resources.

Lawsuit claims a MAGA hat is a ‘spiritual’ symbol
A man is claiming his Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat has religious significance, arguing he was unfairly discriminated against for his “spiritual” beliefs when he entered a New York City bar wearing the iconic red cap.
According to the Gothamist, Philadelphia accountant Greg Piatek filed additional court papers last week in an ongoing suit against West Village bar The Happiest Hour, which he says discriminated against him in January. Piatek initially filed suit in March with the Manhattan Supreme Court, claiming bartenders skipped giving him drinks and insulted him because of his political headwear.
But new documents have introduced a religious twist, the Gothamist reports. In a memo, Piatek and his lawyer now claim he is part of a “protected class” because his MAGA hat is an expression of “closely held spiritual beliefs” that ”entirely transcend the political realm.” He says the topper emblazoned with Donald Trump’s campaign slogan is expressive of a creed — legally speaking — that loosely revolves around sympathy for the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
As strange as it sounds, Piatek’s lawyer Paul Liggieri insists there is legal precedent to support his argument. Although he acknowledges their use of creed is “expansive,” he points to previous instances where the court has acknowledged the rights of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children because of their faith — regardless of whether they belonged to a religious tradition that generally opposes vaccinations, such as Christian Scientists.

The Trump administration just made its most Orwellian attack on abortion
The United States government is holding a woman prisoner to keep her from obtaining an abortion.
Let that fact sink in for a moment. The core issue at the heart of Garza v. Hargan is whether the coercive power of the state can be used to hold someone prisoner to keep them from obtaining an abortion.
It’s important to remember this fact — again, that the most powerful nation on the planet has locked up a woman to stop her from terminating her pregnancy — because the Trump administration wants a panel of three federal judges to believe that Garza is about something else. They want you to think this is a case about whether the Constitution requires the government to “affirmatively facilitate” an “elective abortion.” But this isn’t just a bad legal argument, it’s a bad factual argument. It is an Orwellian argument.
The case revolves around a 17-year-old undocumented immigrant, referred to by the pseudonym “J.D.,” who is currently being held in a government facility. Pursuant to federal law, unaccompanied minors are held in a facility run by the Department of Health and Human Services, which holds them there until a relative in the United States steps forward as the minor’s “sponsor,” until the minor agrees to voluntarily depart the country, or until the minor is deported.

But, of course, there’s a glaring problem with this argument. The only reason why J.D. cannot simply walk into an abortion clinic herself is that she is being held prisoner by the government. If that doesn’t constitute a “substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus,” then it’s hard to imagine that anything does.

Is Congresswoman Frederica Wilson lying about the President Trump’s call to Sgt. La David T. Johnson’s widow, Myeshia Johnson? Wilson said that, on the call, Trump told Johnson her husband “knew what he signed up for” before he was killed on a patrol in Niger.
Trump has said, unequivocally, that he Wilson is lying — he did not say that, he claims.
So either Congresswoman Wilson or President Trump is lying.
Friday morning on Fox and Friends, Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law, revealed there is a way to settle this definitively. There is, according to Lara Trump, a transcript of the conversation. Lara Trump, who does not work in the White House (but does work for Trump’s campaign) has read them.
“You read the transcripts, what were your thoughts?,” Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt asks Lara Trump.
Lara Trump replies with her interpretation of the call having “read exactly what he said.”
Oddly, Lara Trump’s description of the call appears consistent with Congresswoman Wilson’s account. Lara Trump, paraphrasing the conversation, says her father-in-law told Johnson “your husband went in to battle, you know, knowing that he could be injured, knowing that he could be killed.”

For Trumps EPA, the enemy is within

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has made no secret of his preference for industry over environmentalists.
But during a speech at the Heritage Foundation this week, Pruitt hinted at a philosophy that is deeply distrusting not only of environmental advocates, but also of the way environmental research is conducted and how his agency uses science.
Pruitt announced he plans to ban scientists whose work has been funded by EPA grants from advising the agency, and he questioned the scientists’ independence.
“There are dozens and dozens of these folks. Over the years these individuals, as they’ve served in those [advisory] capacities, guess what’s also happened? They’ve received monies through grants, and often substantial monies through grants,” Pruitt said. “That, to me, causes question on the independence and the veracity and the transparency of those recommendations that are coming our way.”

British Airways apologises for bed bug infestation
British Airways has apologised to a Canadian family after they were bitten by bed bugs on a transatlantic flight between Vancouver and London.
Heather Szilagyi, her seven-year-old daughter, Molly, and her fiance, Eric Neilson, were left covered with painful insect bites while travelling from Canada to Slovakia this month.
British Airways offered an apology to the family and upgraded their return flights to business class.
Szilagyi said she had first noticed the bed bugs on the seat in front of her, then spotted another crawling out from behind a TV monitor. “I wanted to grab it but they’re quick and it crawled back inside, behind the screen,” she told the Canadian broadcaster CTV.
Szilagyi says she alerted a flight attendant but was told the flight was full and nothing could be done. “It was nine hours of knowing that I was probably going to get bit, but not being sure,” she said.

Pollution kills at least nine million people and costs trillions of dollars every year, according to the most comprehensive global analysis to date, which warns the crisis “threatens the continuing survival of human societies”.
Toxic air, water, soils and workplaces are responsible for the diseases that kill one in every six people around the world, the landmark report found, and the true total could be millions higher because the impact of many pollutants are poorly understood. The deaths attributed to pollution are triple those from Aids, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
The vast majority of the pollution deaths occur in poorer nations and in some, such as India, Chad and Madagascar, pollution causes a quarter of all deaths. The international researchers said this burden is a hugely expensive drag on developing economies.

Retired Navy SEAL praising Trump on Fox News was a fake

Fox News ran a story on Oct. 8 about a decorated Vietnam War Navy SEAL and glass artist who created an enormous presidential glass seal he hoped to give to President Trump. On Thursday, 11 days later, the network retracted the story after being told the Trump supporter never served in the SEALs or in Vietnam, much less earned commendations for his service.
In the segment, John Garafalo said he served in the Vietnam War with the U.S. Navy SEAL team. Fox News reported that he also received two Purple Hearts and about two dozen other medals for his service.
The man’s claimed record turned out to be a fabrication. It was first discovered by former Navy SEALs. Both these SEALs and family members of Garofalo contacted Fox News about the story, according to the Navy Times.
Don Shipley, a retired SEAL, told the Navy Times that he contacted Fox on Oct. 9, the day after the story ran.

CIA director distorts intelligence communitys findings on Russian interference

CIA Director Mike Pompeo declared Thursday that U.S. intelligence agencies determined that Russia’s interference in the 2016 American presidential election did not alter the outcome, a statement that distorted spy agency findings.
“The intelligence community’s assessment is that the Russian meddling that took place did not affect the outcome of the election,” Pompeo said at a security conference in Washington.
His comment suggested — falsely — that a report released by U.S. intelligence agencies in January had ruled out any impact that could be attributed to a covert Russian interference campaign that involved leaks of tens of thousands of stolen emails, the flooding of social media sites with false claims and the purchase of ads on Facebook.
