Janis Joplin: the singer who screamed a very American pain

When did pop first show that it had the capacity to feel bad? Not bad in the sense of feeling blue or worried or cross or cray-zee, or bothered by intimations of existential dread, but bad in the sense of feeling disturbed. That pop, rock, soul or whatever had the potential to take both hands off the banisters and let itself fall backwards without thought into abysmal, chaotic feeling. When did rock first show signs that it had the power to express what we might now call, for want of a better expression, pathology?

My first encounter with extreme feeling in pop music came a couple of years before I was capable of registering any kind of extreme feeling myself. In 1971, Janis Joplin was the sound of approaching anguish for my generation of 11-year-olds. Her sandpaper howls were for us, I suppose, what we thought of when we thought of the existential scream of nature, as we often did: an auditory update of Edvard Munch for the post-hippy generation. When she let rip, the world formed its mouth into an O and put its hands up to the sides of its face.

But what did we know of her really? Very little. I remember registering at the time (probably from advertising copy, poster art and LP sleeves) her vivid personal iconography: round, tinted specs, feather boas in her hair and a hungry grin that opened her face to the sky. I also think I acquired the knowledge that she was Texan, that she was a roustabout and that she had expired only recently, as part of the same hippy decimation that had disposed of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, all of them victims of excess of one kind or another. Had she lived, she would have been 75 this month.

Russian-trained mercenaries back Bosnia's Serb separatists

Russian-trained mercenaries are helping to establish a paramilitary unit serving the Serb separatist leader in Bosnia, it was reported in Sarajevo on Friday.

The report on the Žurnal news site, which was confirmed by the Bosnian security minister, comes at a time of mounting western anxiety about Russian efforts to destabilise the Balkans and resist Nato enlargement in the region.

On Tuesday, Milorad Dodik, the hardline leader of the Serb half of Bosnia, staged a military parade in Banja Luka in defiance of a ruling by the country’s constitutional court.

The Žurnal report said that a militia called “Serbian Honour” – which it said had been trained in a Russian-funded “humanitarian centre” in Serbia – was in the process of setting up a paramilitary group to be used against Dodik’s opponents.

Trump Administration Gives Lucrative Waiver To Trumps Bank

Source: National Memo

David Sirota

Posted with permission from International Business Times

The Trump administration has waived part of the punishment for five megabanks whose affiliates were convicted and fined for manipulating global interest rates. One of the Trump administration waivers was granted to Deutsche Bank — which is owed at least $130 million by President Donald Trump and his business empire, and has also been fined for its role in a Russian money laundering scheme.

The waivers were issued in a little-noticed announcement published in the Federal Register during the Christmas holiday week. They come less than two years after then-candidate Trump promised “I'm not going to let Wall Street get away with murder.”

Under laws designed to protect retirement savings, financial firms whose affiliates have been convicted of violating securities statutes are effectively barred from the lucrative business of managing those savings. However, that punishment can be avoided if the firms manage to secure a special exemption from the U.S. Department of Labor, allowing them to keep their status as “qualified professional asset managers.”

In late 2016, the Obama administration extended temporary one-year waivers to five banks — Citigroup, JPMorgan, Barclays, UBS and Deutsche Bank. Late last month, the Trump administration issued new, longer waivers for those same banks, granting Citigroup, JPMorgan, and Barclays five-year exemptions. UBS and Deutsche Bank received 3-year exemptions.

Call It The Who Cares About Consumer Safety Commission

Trump Wants Manufacturers’ Representatives Overseeing Product Safety Agency

By Sarah Okeson

Trump is putting people with long histories opposing product safety in charge of the agency responsible for product safety.

He has re-nominated attorney Ann Marie Buerkle, who is abetting the portable generator industry as it kills about 70 people a year, to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He has also re-nominated Boston attorney Dana Baiocco to the commission. Baiocco represented Yamaha in lawsuits brought by the families of boys injured while riding all-terrain vehicles. Baiocco’s husband, Andrew Susko, was involved in defending Ikea against three lawsuits filed by families of children who died after the company’s dressers tipped over on top of them.

“The Trump administration is filling the nation’s chief consumer product safety agency with friends of big business whose main aim is to weaken health and safety standards and increase profits,” said attorney Remington A. Gregg of Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group.

Portable generators are one of the deadliest consumer products on the market. A 5,000-watt portable generator gives off as much carbon monoxide an hour as 450 idling mid-sized late-1990s cars. From 2005 to 2016, 849 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generators. Another 2,800 suffered from carbon-monoxide poisoning but didn’t die.

After a Sweet Deal With Dad, Eric Trump Assembles a Valuable Penthouse

This story was co-published with The Real Deal.

President Donald Trump’s son Eric is preparing to capitalize on a windfall he received from his father during the presidential campaign: He’s combining three luxury Manhattan high-rise apartments, one of which he purchased at a throwaway price from his father, into one potentially lucrative penthouse.

In the spring of 2016, Eric Trump got a great deal from his father. He bought two previously unsold condominium apartments at Trump Parc East for just $350,000 each, about half of the price they had recently been listed for.

Such bargain basement sales are usually treated as gifts by the IRS. But they might not have been taxed that way, tax experts said, because of advantages available only to real estate developers.

Last month, Eric transferred ownership of one of the condos — unit 14G — and two other adjacent apartments he owns into a new entity called 100 CPS Penthouse LLC.
