My Daughter's First Grade Homework.

This is the math problem:

Bella had 15 valentines to give to the class. She gave 7 of the valentines to the girls in the class. The rest she gave to the boys in the class. How many valentines did Bella give to the boys? SOLVE THE PROBLEM. SHOW YOUR WORK.

So I helped her with this problem and this is how we answered and showed her work.

15-7=8

The teacher graded it and marked this answer as wrong. The teacher said if the answer isn't shown in "circles", it doesn't count. WTF? The paper said nothing about drawing circles but this is what is expected? I'm a little upset about this.

Btw, this is the official answer according to the teacher:

Fuck Rand Paul!

I'm not sure if there's a thread on this article already so I apologize in advance if this is a repost.

Democrats hit Rand Paul for disability comments

Washington (CNN)Democrats blasted Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday for arguing that a majority of people collecting Social Security disability benefits are taking advantage of the system.

Speaking at a New Hampshire diner about government waste, the Kentucky Republican said "there's always somebody who's deserving" of entitlement programs, "But everybody in this room knows somebody who's gaming the system."

"What I tell people is, if you look like me and you hop out of your truck, you shouldn't be getting a disability check. Over half of the people on disability are either anxious or their back hurts -- join the club," he said, drawing a few laughs from the audience. "Who doesn't get a little anxious for work everyday and their back hurts? Everybody over 40 has back pain."

So in one sentence, this asshole declares that anyone who "looks normal" is not disabled.

You want to talk about real anxiety Mr. Paul? How about how I wake at night and shake my child awake because I think she has died! Or how about holding my son in my arms as he stairs at me and takes his final breaths! Shall we even talk about the seven different meds I take for anxiety, depression, and PTSD?

Fuck you, you generalizing ignorant son of a bitch!

Something to ponder.....

I just received my first disability denial letter

I was hoping for an approval but knew the odds were against me. I contacted a law firm yesterday and they are taking the case. The bad part is they get 25% of any back pay. It just seems that the system is designed to make you give up. After looking around online last night, I found these statistics about social security applications. It makes me wonder what the real purpose is to have people in the lower levels decide anything. It seems they deny deny deny and finally a judge has to step in to make the real decision.

ACA Question

I have a question to anyone with experience or knowledge about the ACA. My wife and I found out last week that we're expecting a baby. Of course I'm digging in and trying to plan for everything ahead of time. Today's question is about breast pumps. While researching our options online, I stumbled across this on the ACA website:

Coverage of breast pumps

Your health insurance plan must cover the cost of a breast pump – and may offer to cover either a rental or a new one for you to keep.

Your plan may have guidelines on whether the covered pump is manual or electric, how long the coverage of a rented pump lasts, and when they’ll provide the pump (before or after you have the baby).

But it’s up to you and your doctor to decide what's right for you.

We live in Ohio and our current insurance is Caresource. Is Caresource required to follow the above provision in the ACA? Will Caresource cover the cost of a breast pump or will this have to be an out of pocket expense? Thanks!

They just issued a Winter Storm Warning for my area.(Southern Ohio)

did I miss something? This seems awful early.

Ebola Q&A Thread

Yay! Another ebola thread!

Ok everyone, the purpose of this thread is simple:

1. To provide factual data as it is presented in regards to Ebola.

2. To end the misinformation and bickering that has come from this.

There's good people here and I don't like seeing DU descending into chaos over bad info.

The following Q&A is provided directly from the CDC.

What are body fluids?
Ebola has been detected in blood and many body fluids. Body fluids include saliva, mucus, vomit, feces, sweat, tears, breast milk, urine, and semen.

Can Ebola spread by coughing? By sneezing?
Unlike respiratory illnesses like measles or chickenpox, which can be transmitted by virus particles that remain suspended in the air after an infected person coughs or sneezes, Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with body fluids of a person who has symptoms of Ebola disease. Although coughing and sneezing are not common symptoms of Ebola, if a symptomatic patient with Ebola coughs or sneezes on someone, and saliva or mucus come into contact with that person’s eyes, nose or mouth, these fluids may transmit the disease.

What does “direct contact” mean?
Direct contact means that body fluids (blood, saliva, mucus, vomit, urine, or feces) from an infected person (alive or dead) have touched someone’s eyes, nose, or mouth or an open cut, wound, or abrasion.

How long does Ebola live outside the body?
Ebola is killed with hospital-grade disinfectants (such as household bleach). Ebola on dry surfaces, such as doorknobs and countertops, can survive for several hours; however, virus in body fluids (such as blood) can survive up to several days at room temperature.

Are patients who recover from Ebola immune for life? Can they get it again - the same or a different strain?
Recovery from Ebola depends on good supportive clinical care and a patient’s immune response. Available evidence shows that people who recover from Ebola infection develop antibodies that last for at least 10 years, possibly longer.

We don’t know if people who recover are immune for life or if they can become infected with a different species of Ebola.

If someone survives Ebola, can he or she still spread the virus?
Once someone recovers from Ebola, they can no longer spread the virus. However, Ebola virus has been found in semen for up to 3 months. Abstinence from sex (including oral sex) is recommended for at least 3 months. If abstinence is not possible, condoms may help prevent the spread of disease.

Can Ebola be spread through mosquitos?
There is no evidence that mosquitos or other insects can transmit Ebola virus. Only mammals (for example, humans, bats, monkeys and apes) have shown the ability to spread and become infected with Ebola virus.

If you have any more facts to add, please do and cite your source. If you have a question your curious about, please ask. Let's help each other with facts and become a good source for reliable information. Thanks!

Did Hillary Clinton receive money from the Koch brothers?

I was talking to someone earlier today who claimed this. When I googled it, all I could find was sources I didn't think were trustworthy, so Im asking here. Did she or is this just another RW lie? Thanks!

Retirees' Social Security checks garnished for student loans

Joshua Cohen works with troubled student loan borrowers.
What's surprised Cohen lately is the increasing number of gray-haired people walking in his doors with a problem: A portion of their meager Social Security benefits are being taken by the government to pay for old student loans they had mostly forgotten about.

It's a growing national trend. Last year, 156,000 Americans had their Social Security checks garnished because of student loans they had defaulted on. It's tripled in number from 47,500 in 2006, before the Great Recession. That's according to analysis done by the U.S. Treasury for CNNMoney.

This is so sad.
