Junk Bonds Are Tanking and Icahn Says Meltdown `Just Beginning' Dow -309

Source: Bloomberg

Third Avenue freeze on redemptions sends chill through market

A day after a prominent Wall Street firm shocked investors by freezing withdrawals from a credit mutual fund, things only got nastier in the junk-bond market. Prices on the high-risk securities sank to levels not seen in six years and, to add to the growing sense of alarm, billionaire investor Carl Icahn said the selloff is only starting.

"The timing could not be worse," said Peter Tchir, head of macro strategy with Brean Capital LLC in New York. "Everyone is already nervous about liquidity, oil, the Fed hike -- and you get this extreme event on top of it all. There is a lot of confusion. It’s put people on edge."

‘Liquidity Problem’

The fund, which had $3.5 billion in assets as recently as July of last year, suffered almost $1 billion in redemptions this year through November. The Third Avenue fund lost 13 percent in the past month and is down 27 percent this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Assets have declined to $788 million as of Dec. 8 as clients pulled an estimated $979 million this year through November, according to Morningstar Inc.

Updated - Authorities identify couple who killed 14 at San Bernardino holiday party

Source: LATimes

Dressed in black masks and tactical gear, armed with long guns and pistols, they entered a holiday party for county health workers in San Bernardino as it was in full swing. Before they fled, they had killed 14 people and wounded 17 others.

Four hours later, as fearful residents were ordered to stay home and scores of officers swarmed the streets, authorities chased a black SUV carrying two suspects from a home in the nearby city of Redlands. As TV news stations broadcast live overhead, the chase spilled back onto San Bernardino's streets, where authorities and the suspects traded gunfire.

When it was over, a man and woman connected to the assault were dead. One body lay in the street, blood pooling. Another was recovered from the vehicle. A police officer also was wounded in the firefight but is expected to survive.

Late Wednesday night, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan identified the people killed in the gun battle with police as Syed Rizwan Farook, a 28-year-old American citizen, and 27-year-old Tashfeen Malik. Police did not know where Malik was born or where she had lived.

Burquan said police are "reasonably confident" Farook and Malik, who may have been married or engaged, were the same two people who opened fire at the holiday party Wednesday morning.

4 Million Muslims Killed In Western Wars: Should We Call It Genocide? Aug 2015

AUSTIN, Texas — It may never be possible to know the true death toll of the modern Western wars on the Middle East, but that figure could be 4 million or higher. Since the vast majority of those killed were of Arab descent, and mostly Muslim, when would it be fair to accuse the United States and its allies of genocide?

A March report by Physicians for Social Responsibility calculates the body count of the Iraq War at around 1.3 million, and possibly as many as 2 million. However, the numbers of those killed in Middle Eastern warscould be much higher. In April, investigative journalist Nafeez Ahmed argued that the actual death toll could reach as high as 4 million if one includes not just those killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also the victims of the sanctions against Iraq, which left about 1.7 million more dead, half of them children, according to figures from the United Nations.

Hating Muslims is not Christians, what would Jesus do?

Wow I had no idea that’s how many have been killed; I bet the rest of America has no idea either. If a Born Again Christian killed over 100 thousand Iraqis and injured Tens of thousands more should we hate all born again Christians? I cant see hating all Muslims but I think if nothing else we should do a lot of fence mending of every kind. If we spent a million dollars on medicine to tents a month would be a start in every town that we bombed. It would save us millions more or ten fold and help mend are stupidity and ignorance! Hating Muslims is not Christians, what would Jesus do?

The State of Voting in 2014

• Since the 2010 election, new voting restrictions are slated to be in place in 22 states. Unless these restrictions are blocked — and there are court challenges to laws in six of those states — voters in nearly half the country could find it harder to cast a ballot in the 2014 midterm election than they did in 2010. The new laws range from photo ID requirements to early voting cutbacks to voter registration restrictions. Partisanship and race were key factors in this movement. Most restrictions passed through GOP-controlled legislatures and in states with increases in minority turnout.

• In 15 states, 2014 will be the first major federal election with these new restrictions in place. Ongoing court cases could affect laws in six of these states.

• The courts will play a crucial role in 2014, with ongoing suits challenging laws inseven states. Voting advocates have filed suits in both federal and state courts challenging new restrictions, and those suits are ongoing in seven states — Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. There is also an ongoing case in Iowa over administrative action that could restrict voting. More cases are possible as we get closer to the election.
