17 year old boy gunned down

I can't wait for the wall to wall coverage and discussion of this event and subsequent trial.

1 Dead, 4 Hurt in Shooting at Teen Girl's Birthday Party

A day of celebration turned to a night of chaos for a teenage girl and her friends and family. Police say a teenage boy is dead and four others injured after a shooting broke out during a birthday party for a 15-year-old girl in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.

A party with up to 100 people was taking place inside a home on the 1100 block of Deutz Avenue. Around 11:20 p.m., a gunman opened fire inside the living room area of the house.

Shakir Williams, 17, of Trenton, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. Police also say a 16-year-old boy, 18-year-old boy and two 17-year-old boys were all struck and injured in the shooting.

Police say one of the survivors suffered a gunshot wound to the calf and was treated and released from the hospital. Another victim was struck in the torso, arm, leg and groin and is currently undergoing surgery. The other two victims were struck in the legs and are both currently in stable condition.

I'll wager the news trucks and anchors are racing to the scene as I type.

Here's your NRA approved, 2nd amendment spouting, vomiting on dog Phoenix shooter right here

Anthony Jamar Houston, 22, was booked into the Maricopa County jail on various felony charges, including three counts of aggravated assault, after his arrest about 7 p.m., said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Houston was sought in connection with the Tuesday night shooting that was sparked when Houston allegedly vomited on a dog being walked by the man.

Houston is suspected of firing at the man and then at his apartment, where the man and two children were wounded.

Other charges possibly facing Houston are two counts of felony, three counts of felony endangerment, prohibited possessor of a firearm and discharging a firearm at a residence, Holmes said.

I'm sure that even the most ardent gun-grabber would agree that this POS deserves a life sentence in an Arizona prison for vomiting on a dog let alone being in possession of an illegal firearm.

We need stronger laws against dog vomiting.

Rising CO2 Promoting Desert 'Greening'

July 08, 2013; 2:11 PM
Increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the past 30 years have caused an 11 percent increase in foliage over arid regions of North America, Australia, Africa and the Middle East, according to researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) from Australia.
The image below is satellite data that shows the percent amount that foliage cover has changed around the world from 1982 to 2010. Note the biggest increases are in the arid regions of western North America, Africa and western Australia. Image courtesy of CSIRO.

This process, also known as CO2 fertilization, occurs where elevated CO2 enables a leaf during photosynthesis, the process by which green plants convert sunlight into sugar, to extract more carbon from the air or lose less water to the air, or both, according to the CSIRO press release.
The elevated CO2 causes individual leaves of a plant to use less water, thus plants in arid regions will respond by increasing their total number of leaves, according to the report.
Scientists have long known the effects of CO2 on foliage, but until now it has been difficult to demonstrate, according to CSIRO research scientist Dr. Randall Donohue.

In findings based on satellite observations, CSIRO, in collaboration with the Australian National University (ANU), found that this CO2 fertilisation correlated with an 11 per cent increase in foliage cover from 1982-2010 across parts of the arid areas studied in Australia, North America, the Middle East and Africa, according to CSIRO research scientist, Dr Randall Donohue.

It appears to me that an increase in CO2 triggers an increase in vegetation, or a decrease in desertfication, leading to a greater sequestration of carbon dioxide.

Or in other words the earth's natural systems will balance themselves out over time.

Friday night holiday weekend Obamacare news dump

I sure missed this, the Twitter and a few blogs are starting to repeat it...

Health insurance marketplaces will not be required to verify consumer claims

The Obama administration announced Friday that it would significantly scale back the health law’s requirements that new insurance marketplaces verify consumers’ income and health insurance status.

Instead, the federal government will rely more heavily on consumers’ self-reported information until 2015, when it plans to have stronger verification systems in place.

The White House delay on the employer mandate to provide health insurance has raised questions about the readiness of the Affordable Care Act on the whole.
A new rule says the online exchanges can accept statements about income and health insurance status.

The delay comes after a Tuesday announcement that the federal government would postpone for one year a requirement that employers with 50 or more full-time workers provide health coverage.

“I think that Health and Human Services is doing the best that it can under the circumstances,” said Sara Rosenbaum, a health policy professor at George Washington University.

In other words the ENTIRE ACA is pretty much being delayed until after the midterm elections.

It's the optics and it looks like a cluster fluck.
