Colbert Refuses to Let Omarosa Laugh Off Trump Support

Stephen Colbert Grills Omarosa Over Her Trump White House ‘Plantation’ Claims

The ‘Late Show’ host took Omarosa Manigault-Newman to task for turning her time in Trump’s White House into reality-show drama.

Stephen Colbert couldn’t quite believe he got Omarosa Manigault-Newman to appear on his CBS show Wednesday night. But there she was, fresh off her surprisingly revealing stint on that same network’s Celebrity Big Brother.

“My next guest went from the White House to the Big Brother house, and managed to make it out of both of them alive,” Colbert said, giving his guest a warm welcome.

Despite her dire warnings about the fate of the republic, Omarosa appeared to be in good spirits when she walked onto the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater. And if she saw any of the clips of Colbert brutally mocking her on The Late Show while she was trapped inside the Big Brother house, she didn’t let on.

Right off the bat, Omarosa admitted that working for Trump’s White House was “a little crazier” than living in an enclosed space with a group of mostly D-list celebrity strangers for 30 days.

Australians Turn in 57,000 Guns in Landmark National Amnesty

Source: BBC

In 1996, a man walked into a tourist resort in Tasmania, Australia, and shot 35 people dead, wounding 23 others. Known as the Port Arthur Massacre, it was the deadliest mass shooting in Australian history and forever changed the country’s relationship with guns, leading to laws that heavily restricted their purchase and ownership. On Thursday, Australian authorities announced that 57,000 firearms were turned in last year during the country’s first guns amnesty since the 1996 massacre, which allowed people to hand in illegal, unregistered firearms without fear of prosecution. The guns were then either destroyed or properly registered. “Taking these unregistered firearms off the streets means they will not fall into the hands of criminals, who might use them to endanger the lives of innocent Australians,” said Law Enforcement Minister Angus Taylor. Among the returned firearms were 2,500 automatic weapons, 2,900 handguns, and one rocket launcher.

Jared Kushner & Ivanka Trump Came to Washington Seeking Power & Glamour. They'll Leave With Neither

Jared and Ivanka are just the latest in a long line of presidential family members who didn’t exactly bowl Washington over. But they’re also the lamest.

MARGARET CARLSON
02.28.18 10:30 PM ET

In many ways, Jared Kushner won’t be any worse off than prior presidential family members working in the White House. Sure, he won’t be privy to classified intelligence. He’ll be asked to leave the room when the topics turn top secret. If he tries to enter the Situation Room, a large person talking into his wrist will bar him.

But these limitations didn’t stop Webb Hayes (Rutherford B.’s chief of staff), John Eisenhower (aide-de-camp to and son of Ike), Alice Roosevelt (Teddy’s right-hand woman and eldest daughter) or Bobby Kennedy (so infamous for being JFK’s attorney general a law was passed to keep it form happening again) from influential positions counseling presidents of the same surname.

Sixteen children of presidents officially worked in the White House, by the estimate of author Doug Wead in All the Presidents’ Children, and even more unofficially. James and Elliot Roosevelt were constantly at their father’s side after polio rendered him paraplegic, their strong arms, Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote, making it seem in public as if he were still able to walk. Daughter Anna moved in to the White House in 1943 filling the role of first lady leaving Eleanor to turn her ceremonial role into a substantive one.

But in Kushner’s case, given his portfolio, his demotion to the kid’s table could prove fatal. Trump flouted the anti-nepotism rules like every other norm, whether giving up his business, releasing his tax returns, or accounting for the money he promised to charity.

Putin claims Russia has nuclear arsenal capable of avoiding missile defenses

Source: The Washington Post

By Anton Troianovski March 1 at 7:01 AM

MOSCOW — Russia has developed nuclear weapons that can avoid missile defense systems and plans to bolster its arsenal with nuclear-powered cruise missiles capable of hitting any point on the globe, President Vladimir Putin claimed in his annual address to lawmakers Thursday.

He also warned that Moscow would consider any nuclear attack, of any size, on it or its allies an attack on Russia that would lead to an immediate response — adopting Cold War-style overtones that appeared to ramp up Russia’s posturing against the West and its allies.

Putin speech began with a rundown of domestic projects, then veered into a harsh rendering of East-West tensions and boasts over purported major advances in Russia’s arsenal such as a nuclear-powered cruise missile that could strike anywhere.

Putin did not specify any of Moscow’s allies that it would defend or cite any immediate threats. But his remarks could be seen as a message to Washington over souring relations with Moscow, including U.S. investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump refers to Sessions as 'Mr. Magoo': report

BY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 02/28/18 07:39 PM EST

President Trump refers to Attorney General Jeff Sessions as “Mr. Magoo,” The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Trump has been comparing his top law enforcement official to the bumbling cartoon character, an elderly man who lands in comic situations largely due to his severe near-sightedness.

The president has also been complaining to associates that he generally has hired the best lawyers for himself, but that as president he’s forced to utilize Sessions, who isn’t defending Trump to the best of his ability, according to The Post.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly investigating whether Trump tried to oust Sessions from his administration last summer.

Trump repeatedly upends GOP lawmakers in gun session

Jeremy Diamond 2017CNN Digital Expansion 2017
By Jeremy Diamond and Dan Merica, CNN

Updated 6:59 PM ET, Wed February 28, 2018

Washington (CNN) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday signaled his support for a hodgepodge of policies -- from strengthening background checks to raising the minimum age to buy certain guns and taking guns away from the mentally ill -- during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House.

But after the hourlong televised session, it was still unclear what specific legislation Trump would support. And the wide-ranging meeting, which included blunt back-and-forths between the President and members of both parties, laid bare the vast divide on gun legislation and Trump's own unfamiliarity with the searing, years-old gun debate.

Trump did make clear, though, that he hopes lawmakers will put together a more comprehensive bill that will change gun laws, tackle mental health issues and include other provisions to stop mass shootings from recurring. It's an approach that contradicts the more narrow ideas Republican leaders have pushed in the wake of the Parkland, Florida school shooting two weeks ago.

"I'd rather have you come down on the strong side, instead of the weak side," Trump told the lawmakers as he wrapped the meeting. "The weak side would be much easier. I'd rather have you come up with a strong, strong bill and really strong on background checks."

His approach was largely in opposition to National Rifle Association priorities, and he undercut Republicans throughout the session.

NRA on Trump meeting: Great TV, but 'bad policy'

Source: The Hill

BY LYDIA WHEELER - 02/28/18 07:26 PM EST

The National Rifle Association (NRA) on Wednesday issued a blistering statement criticizing a meeting held by President Trump and lawmakers to discuss gun proposals in the wake of a mass shooting at a Florida high school.

During the bipartisan meeting, Trump said guns should be taken from dangerous individuals even if it violates due process rights, and suggested lawmakers remove a concealed-carry measure from a bipartisan background checks bill.

The measure, which would allow concealed weapons to be carried over state lines, is a top NRA priority.

“While today’s meeting made for great TV, the gun-control proposals discussed would make for bad policy that would not keep our children safe,” NRA Spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said in a statement to The Hill.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's NRA visit among several trips being questioned

By Cristina Alesci, Sara Ganim, Rene Marsh and Gregory Wallace, CNN

Updated 9:52 PM ET, Tue February 27, 2018

(CNN) In September, women gun owners and enthusiasts from the National Rifle Association headed to a plush Four Seasons resort in Texas for an annual retreat and clay shooting at the Dallas Gun Club with one of the weekend's headliners: Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.

Zinke went to target practice with the women, posting about their marksmanship on Twitter -- #GalsWithGuns -- as part of his two-night stay. He also stopped at a posh office park in Dallas to meet with a small group that included wealthy Republican donors who raised money for Trump's presidential campaign. The meeting appears on the secretary's official schedule as an informal luncheon with community leaders focused on sporting and conservation.

Zinke's choice to meet with donors in the midst of official business is one of several travel decisions during his first year as secretary that have some critics questioning his priorities, even if they don't necessarily violate agency rules. Zinke's travel habits have already spawned two investigations, including one looking into whether his activities are in violation of the Hatch Act, which limits the political activity of federal employees.

A CNN review of documents found several examples that ethics watchdogs say raise questions about whether Zinke is misusing his travel privileges, despite receiving approval from the department's lawyer and ethics officer.

Tucker Carlson, Sham Hannity issue corrections on CNN smear

By Erik Wemple February 28 at 11:54 AM

Actually, CNN did not attempt to impose some “scripted” questions on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab. Such was the message on Tuesday night issued from Fox News hosts Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity in corrections to the bogus media story of last week. “For the sake of honesty and full disclosure, to which we are committed, we have to tell you there is no evidence as of right now that CNN tried to give Colton Haab a scripted question. And we want you to know that,” said Carlson on his eponymous show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” That admission followed an extensive summary of the events as Carlson had reported them.

For his part, Hannity stuck with a smaller disclosure:

We have a quick update on a story we told you about last week. Colton Haab is a Stoneman Douglas High School student. He was supposed to appear on CNN’s gun-control town hall. He said the network tried to script his question. Both he and his father said they had emails to prove that, told the entire media. Tonight Glenn Haab told the AP that he omitted some words from the email; he says he didn’t do it on purpose. Therefore, what Haabs told all news outlets last week was inaccurate. Our job is always to strive for the truth, and we want to correct the record.

Both corrections were prompted by an Associated Press story reporting that Glenn Haab, father of Colton Haab, had admitted to altering an email that was part of a back-and-forth between the Haab family and a CNN producer. The alteration left some ambiguity as to whether CNN may have imposed a question on the 17-year-old Colton Haab. CNN on Friday released its own email records of the correspondence after two news outlets — Fox News and HuffPost — had forwarded allegedly doctored correspondence as part of an effort to authenticate the records.
