Where is Childhood Homelessness Getting Worse?

Map: Where is Childhood Homelessness Getting Worse? ( 2013)

The number of homeless students in the United States reached a record high last year, according to new data from the Education Department showing that 1.2 million children had no place to call home.

The troubling new report casts light on a problem that four years into the nation’s economic recovery, has only grown worse. The total number of homeless children enrolled in preschools and K-12 programs rose 10 percent during the 2011-12 school year and 24 percent since the beginning of the 2009-10 academic year, according to the report.

In all, 41 states saw a rise in homelessness among school-aged children last year. Fifteen states reported a gain of at least 10 percent while another 10 states reported spikes of 20 percent or more. The map below breaks down the changes:

Who Were the Ancient Bog Mummies? Surprising New Clues

Who Were the Ancient Bog Mummies? Surprising New CluesOngoing research suggests at least two 2,000-year-old corpses had traveled before their deaths.

Tollund Man, who was hanged with a leather cord and cast into a Danish bog, is housed at Denmark's Silkeborg Museum.

Over 500 Iron Age bog bodies and skeletons dating to between 800 B.C. and A.D. 200 have been discovered in Denmark alone, with more unearthed in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. (Read "Tales From the Bog" in National Geographic.)

Much of the bodies' skin, hair, clothes, and stomach contents have been remarkably well preserved, thanks to the acidic, oxygen-poor conditions of peat bogs, which are made up of accumulated layers of dead moss.

Tollund Man, for example, found in 1950 on Denmark's Jutland Peninsula and perhaps the most famous bog body in the world, still "has this three-day beard—you feel he will open his eyes and talk to you. It's something that not even Tutankhamun could make you feel," said Karin Margarita Frei, a research scientist who studies bog bodies at the National Museum of Denmark.

In Denmark, about 30 of these naturally mummified corpses are housed in museums, where scientists have worked for decades to figure out who these people were and why they died.

Because some bear horrific wounds, such as slashed throats, and were buried instead of cremated like most others in their communities, scientists have suggested the bodies had been sacrificed as criminals, slaves, or simply commoners. The Roman historian Tacitus started this idea in the first century A.D. by suggesting they were deserters and criminals. (SeeNational Geographic's pictures of bog bodies.)

Toxic Behaviors/Joy Stealing

11 Toxic Behaviors That Will Steal Your Joy (And How to Move Past Them)

Dawn Gluskin 07/17/14 08:50 AM ET

Our thoughts, actions and behaviors play a powerful role in what type of energy we attract into our lives. That's the good news. It's also the bad news. Oftentimes, we find ourselves participating in negative behavior patterns, even if at a subconscious level. Like a giant lightning rod in a crazy thunderstorm, we become super-attractors... bringing in even more bad energy. These toxic habits can steal the joy right out from under our nose... and nobody wants that

We Are Women Rally Washington, D.C., September 12th & 13th, 2014

We Are Woman Constitution Day Rally in Washington, D.C., 2014. The rally is focused on voter rights and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Info here:

What is your Constitutional Equality worth?

What would you do or sacrifice for it?

139 women have paid the ultimate price in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They died for a Constitution that has no enumerated rights for women other than the vote. Why?  Because corporations want cheap labor, and that labor is done by women.

On average, White women make 77 cents to every man’s dollar.
Asians women 83 cents
Black women 65 cents
Latina Women 55 cents

US House members, including conservative women, voted against equal pay.

Demand that they support equal rights through the removal of the deadline or the ERA.
