Former Jan. 6 defendant who was arrested near Obama's house is convicted on gun charges

Taylor Taranto, a military veteran, was one of the roughly 1,500 Capitol riot defendants

WASHINGTON — A former Jan. 6 defendant who was arrested after he showed up at former President Barack Obama’s home in 2023 was convicted Tuesday of illegal possession of guns and ammunition.

Taylor Taranto, who was apprehended while he was livestreaming video near Obama’s house in Washington, D.C., was also found guilty of a false information and hoaxes charge related to a video he streamed a day earlier claiming he was on a “one-way mission” to blow up the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols ruled on the case following a bench trial that got underway last week.

Taranto's attorney, Carmen Hernandez, blasted the verdict.

..............

Taranto had posted about appearing outside Obama’s residence the same day in June 2023 that Trump shared a screenshot on social media that included what he said was Obama’s Washington address.
Prosecutors said Taranto reposted what Trump had shared and then posted about being outside Obama’s home, writing,
“We got these losers surrounded!”

Investigators said they found two guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in Taranto's van, along with a machete, when he was arrested. Prosecutors alleged that Taranto repeatedly said that he was trying to get a “shot” and that he wanted to get a “good angle on a shot.”....................

Federal judge blocks immigration authorities from revoking international students' legal status

Source: AP

By JANIE HAR Updated 1:56 PM CDT, May 22, 2025

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A judge in California blocked the Trump administration Thursday from terminating the legal status of international students nationwide while a court case challenging previous terminations is pending.

The order by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White in Oakland bars the government from arresting, incarcerating or moving students elsewhere based on their legal status until the case is resolved. Students could still be arrested for other reasons and their legal status can still be revoked if they are convicted of a violent crime carrying a prison term of more than a year.

Most courts hearing these types of cases have granted protections to the person suing, but White said the government’s actions “wreaked havoc” not only on the lives of plaintiffs but other nonimmigrants in the U.S. on student visas.

White, who was nominated by President George W. Bush, a Republican, issued the nationwide injunction sought by attorneys for about two dozen students who sued after their legal status was abruptly terminated in early April by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

More than 4,700 international students had their permission to study in the U.S. canceled this spring, with little notice or explanation, as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigrants and foreign nationals. In court hearings, Department of Homeland Security officials said they ran the names of student visa holders through an FBI-run database that contains the names of suspects and people who have been arrested, even if the charges were dropped or they were never charged with a crime............................

Tesla Loses a Major Record for the First Time Amid Musk Backlash

Source: daily beast

Janna Brancolini Updated 05.22.25 7:04AM EDT /

Tesla cars were outsold by a rival electric-vehicle manufacturer in Europe for the first time. The Chinese company BYD sold 7,231 fully electric cars in April compared to Tesla’s 7,165, according to the automotive data firm Jato Dynamics. The numbers represent a breakthrough for BYD as Tesla has dominated the European battery electric vehicle market for years. BYD only began operating beyond Norway and the Netherlands in late 2022, but has apparently benefited from Tesla’s reputation tanking since CEO Elon Musk joined President Donald Trump’s administration. This week, it emerged that even King Charles III decided not to go with Tesla when he bought a $210,000 fully electric SUV. Instead, the eco-conscious monarch chose to buy a Lotus, a historically British brand that now has a 51 percent Chinese ownership stake and manufactures in Wuhan, China.

Bad, bad news.

Clearly, this isn’t about efficiency or saving money. It’s about giving tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations at the expense of our kids, families, seniors, and veterans by cutting critical programs like Medicaid.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth held a Christian prayer service at the Pentagon on Wednesday morning in the building’s auditorium during working hours, The New York Times reported.

During the service, Hegseth’s pastor said President Donald Trump had been anointed by God to lead the country and to provide “moral clarity.”

The 30-minute event, which Hegseth said he intends to hold once a month, was called the “Secretary of Defense Christian Prayer & Worship Service.” The main speaker was Hegseth’s pastor, Brooks Potteiger.

“King Jesus, we come humbly before you, seeking your face, seeking your grace, in humble obedience to your law and to your word,” Hegseth prayed as those in the standing room only crowd bowed their heads. “We come as sinners saved only by that grace, seeking your providence in our lives and in our nation. Lord God, we ask for the wisdom to see what is right and in each and every day, in each and every circumstance, the courage to do what is right in obedience to your will. It is in the name of our lord and savior, Jesus Christ, that we pray. And all God’s people say amen.”

Massive floods strand over 50,000 in eastern Australia

Source: msn

Story by AFP • 11h •

Rising floodwaters stranded more than 50,000 people in eastern Australia on Thursday, as torrential rain pummelled water-logged towns for a second day and engorged rivers swallowed roads, leaving two dead.

Police have pulled two bodies from floodwaters on the Mid North Coast, a river-braided region of rugged hills and fertile valleys about 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of Sydney.

Authorities launched a major search and rescue mission as people clambered atop cars, houses and highway bridges to escape the tide of muddy water.

The storms have in some areas dumped more than half a year's worth of rain over just three days, the government weather bureau said.

"I must also say that we're bracing for more bad news in the next 24 hours. This natural disaster has been terrible for this community," New South Wales (NSW) state premier Chris Minns told reporters on Thursday. .....................
