Immigration officials say Pelosi attacker was in US illegally

David DePape, the man accused of violently attacking Paul Pelosi last week, was in the United States illegally and may face deportation, the Department of Homeland Security said late Wednesday.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer on Canadian national David DePape with San Francisco County Jail, Nov. 1, following his Oct. 28 arrest,” the department said.

ICE issues so-called immigration “detainers” to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to inform them that the agency intends to take custody of an individual and requests that ICE be notified before that individual is released.

The detainer is unlikely to affect DePape’s case since deportations often happen after criminal cases are resolved. But after conviction and prison sentence, the US normally would seek deportation.

Rush City mayor calls emergency meeting on diversity mural

Rush City mayor calls emergency meeting on diversity mural

The mayor of Rush City has called a special City Council meeting to discuss a mural that celebrates diversity.

The new mural is on the exterior of a hair salon in Rush City, located in Chisago County. The mural has created some controversy, and the city issued a zoning violation notice about it.

City leaders insist the mural is not authorized under local statutes and have ordered the business to remove it. But the owners argue, the painting sends a message of inclusivity and unity, and they are not touching it.

Now, Rush City Mayor Dan Dahlberg has called a special meeting of the City Council to "discuss" the zoning violation the city issued. The meeting will be held on November 7.

Meanwhile, a "Save the Wall" rally is planned for Saturday.

Day of the Dead altar created in Minnesota Capitol for 1st time

For the first time in state history, a Day of the Dead altar is standing in the Minnesota State Capitol to honor the Mexican holiday.

In partnership with Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs (MCLA) and (Neo) Muralismos de Mexico, artists Monica Vega and Flor Soto created the first-ever altar de muertos, or community altar, at the Capitol.

“It leaves you breathless to see this community come together in a place that’s so powerful,” Jessica Oasaca, an attendee, said.

Some compare the Day of the Dead to a family reunion, but loved ones who died are the guest of honor.

Man shot by officer after 'recklessly' driving through barricaded Halloween event: Police

Man shot by officer after 'recklessly' driving through barricaded Halloween event: Police

An investigation is underway after a driver "recklessly" went through a barricaded area during a Halloween event in Omaha, Nebraska, and was shot by an officer, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Monday in a residential area of Omaha where the street had been closed off to cars for trick-or-treating.

Officers who were handing out candy at the event were alerted that someone was "driving recklessly" down the boulevard, the Omaha Police Department said in a press release. The driver was traveling in the wrong direction with no headlights on, police said.

One of the officers ran in front of the car and "gave multiple loud verbal commands to the driver and held out his hand gesturing for the driver to stop the vehicle," police said.

Question: how crazy do you have to be that Jesse Ventura can't take it?

Answer: Scott Jensen

‘This election is too important;’ Ventura endorses Gov. Walz

In a bit of a rare move, former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura released an endorsement Thursday morning.

The state’s 38th governor, who served as an independent from 1999 to 2003, endorsed DFL incumbent Gov. Tim Walz for reelection.

“As an independent statesman, I don’t believe in the major political parties. Since leaving office, I’ve rarely endorsed a candidate for office in Minnesota – of any political persuasion,” Ventura said in a video shared by Walz’s campaign. “But this election is too important. That’s why I’m endorsing Governor Tim Walz for reelection.”

Ventura cited Walz’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his support for women’s rights and abortion rights, as reasons he’s voting for Walz. He added that he won’t stand with anyone “who cannot condemn the January 6th insurrection.”

Roseville police: 1 dead, 4 hurt; 17-year-old suspect in custody

Roseville police say a homicide suspect is in custody after a shelter-in-place order was broadly issued Tuesday morning.

According to Roseville Police Chief Erika Scheider, who spoke during a news conference Tuesday afternoon, police responded to the 1100 block of Ryan Avenue at about 10:23 a.m. on a report of an assault in progress.

Upon arrival, officers found one person they pronounced dead at the scene, as well as two people with serious injuries and two people with minor injuries. The suspect, later described as a 17-year-old male, had left the scene by the time officers arrived.

Scheider said a preliminary investigation revealed the suspect, the person found dead, and the four people found injured are all family members.

Sacheen Littlefather's sisters say she was not Native American. The actress had disputed similar claims before.

In 1973, actress Sacheen Littlefeather stepped on stage at the Oscars on behalf of Marlon Brando, identifying herself as a member of the Apache tribe and turning down his award because of the way Native Americans were treated in the U.S. Now, her two sisters are saying she lied — their family is not Native American.

Littlefeather, who died earlier this month at age 75, was active in the Native American Bay Area community. During her speech at the Oscars, she said she was president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. In an interview published in a San Francisco Chronicle opinion column over the weekend, her biological sisters, Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi, said Littlefeather did not tell the truth that night.

"It's a lie," Orlandi told activist and writer Jacqueline Keeler in the exclusive interview. "My father was who he was. His family came from Mexico. And my dad was born in Oxnard," a city near Los Angeles.

Littlefeather said she was part White Mountain Apache and part Yaqui, two tribes located in Arizona.
