Log Cabin Republicans officially denounce Texas GOP Platform

Log Cabin Republicans of Texas has officially denounced the 2014 Texas Republican Platform due to the inclusion of the plank endorsing “reparative therapy,” according to a statement released this afternoon by Jeff Davis, LCR-Texas chairman.

But the gay Republican group did applaud the removal of some “archaic” anti-gay language from the GOP platform.

Davis said, “While we are proud of the progress made by removing some of the archaic and damaging anti-gay language from the platform, Log Cabin Republicans of Texas is outraged over the addition of the plank regarding reparative therapy. Texas Republicans, regardless of sexual orientation, do not support this plank of the platform. The Republican Party of Texas should be ashamed that they are not representing the people.”

The archaic language to which Davis referred was found in a plank included in previous platforms, which read: “The practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit.” His organization also praised the removal of a plank saying that the LGBT community should not be allowed to serve in the military.

How does a drag queen keep her figure? For Mistress Ginger, vegan does it

GINGER GRANTS | Adding vegan options to a diet — even if it’s not every dish you eat — doesn’t have to be a drag, according to cabaret performer and cookbook queen Mistress Ginger.

Oh, snap (peas)!

Pink-haired cabaret performer Mistress Ginger proudly proclaims herself a rare and rather elusive quadruple threat — singer, dancer, actress … and vegan know-it-all. She combines showgirl glamour, bawdy humor and a broad knowledge of plant-based cuisine in a new cookbook, Mistress Ginger Cooks!: Everyday Vegan Foods for Everyone.

There is some controversy, however, as to whether credit should go entirely to Mistress Ginger — who earned the title “mistress” as a dominatrix in a 2006 BDSM-meets-song-and-dance revue called Broadway Bound and Gagged — or should be shared with Justin Leaf, a 2001 Juilliard graduate with a BFA in dance and Ginger’s alter ego.

“Justin Leaf is, shall we say, my creative advisor,” Ginger explains. “He is sort of behind the scenes, giving me little ideas now and then.

But, of course, I am the true author of Mistress Ginger Cooks! You can read it right there on my cookbook — by Mistress Ginger. So there you go.”

One of Mistress Ginger’s primary motivations for writing the glitzy, photo-laden cookbook was to introduce the notion that a variety of plant-based food alternatives are readily available for vegans and non-vegans alike. And a recurring theme in the book is the romantic notion that food and passion are inextricably intertwined.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas refuses to ship some HIV drugs to certain doctors

Two of Texas’ most experienced AIDS physicians say Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas has refused to ship certain specialty medications they ordered to them because the doctors also offer cosmetic treatments.

Specialty medications, including some used in treating HIV and AIDS, often aren’t readily available through neighborhood pharmacies. Because of the costs associated with those drugs, insurance companies control their distribution, sometimes distributing the medications through their own pharmacies.

But spokespeople with Dr. Steven Pounders and Dr. Jaime Vasquez say this system has forced them to refer patients needing some medications to specialists.

Chris Brown, Pounders’ medical assistant, said that two such drugs are Egrifta and Serostim, injectibles that are used in treating the wasting syndrome associated with AIDS. Accredo, Blue Cross’ pharmacy, ships the two medications to physicians for infusion. But the pharmacy won’t ship them to Pounders.

As Perry Exits, Texas GOP Shifting Away From Toll Roads

The Texas Republican state convention drew national headlines last month with candidates and activists staking out hard-line positions on homosexuality and immigration.

Less noticed was a significant shift in the party’s stance on transportation, particularly the state’s reliance on toll roads. In the new platform, Republican delegates removed a provision backing “the legitimate construction of toll roads in Texas” and replaced it with language opposing some aspects of toll projects in Texas, particularly the use of public money to subsidize private entities.

The conservative pushback against toll roads comes as Gov. Rick Perry prepares to leave office after 14 years marked by a sustained push for toll roads and toll lanes. With about 25 toll roads in the state, according to the Texas Department of Transportation, the state has used the projects to stretch limited funds and expand its highway network. Most of the state’s toll roads had been opened or expanded since 2000, the year Perry became governor.

“There is an enormous amount of toll fatigue in Texas,” said Susan Fletcher, a Republican delegate from Collin County who supported the new platform language.

Wylie cat sanctuary welcomes 5-year-old white tiger

WYLIE, TEXAS -- A 5-year-old white tiger named Karma has found a home at a Wylie-based big cats rescue center.

In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center welcomed the female tiger this week, after receiving a phone call from a breeder who wanted to give her up because he wasn’t getting the results he had hoped for. Karma will be the first female white tiger to call In-Sync Exotics home.

Karma’s white coat is due to a recessive gene that is passed down from a mother and father who both carry the gene. White tigers are often the result of inbreeding, which rarely happens naturally in the wild, and many do not survive, according to the cat sanctuary.

In-Sync Exotics is a rescue center for abused, neglected and unwanted exotic cats, including tigers, lions, cougars and leopards. Last summer, seven large cats died there after an outbreak of a dog disease — canine distemper — spread through the center.

Univ. of Texas President Powers refusing ultimatum to resign

Austin -- University of Texas President Bill Powers has refused an ultimatum to resign but is open to discussing a timetable for leaving office, a well-placed source told the American-Statesman on Friday.

UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa gave the president of the Austin flagship the ultimatum late Wednesday in a meeting at the system’s offices in downtown Austin. Simply put, Powers must resign by sometime today, effective in the fall, or be fired next week, two sources told the Statesman.

“There wasn’t a clear reason given,” said a well-placed source who was not authorized to speak publicly. “As far as we know, it was a quick conversation but there was no specific reason given.”

The ultimatum was apparently first reported on the website breitbart.com.
