While others upgrade their venues, Aloha Stadium sits and rusts

Outside the Davis Family ownership, perhaps the most jubilant person about the Oakland Raiders’ impending move to Las Vegas is Tony Sanchez.

Small wonder since Sanchez is the University of Nevada-Las Vegas head football coach and his team will get to ditch the metal erector-set bleachers of wind-blown Boyd Stadium and take up residence in the palatial $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat home that is to be built for the Raiders near McCarran International Airport by 2020.

“Sharing a state-of-the-art stadium with the Raiders is another thing that will allow us to recruit at a high level,” Sanchez crowed in a statement. “The combination of an NFL stadium and our upcoming Fertitta Football Complex brings so much energy to this program and campus.”

While the Vegas edifice is, far and away, the biggest luxury item in the Mountain West Conference’s escalating building boom, it is hardly the only new stadium or set of renovations undertaken.

Pet dog is shot dead after it breaks free at Honolulu Airport

Leisha Ramos had just returned to her home island of Oahu when a series of events led to a security guard fatally shooting her dog, Kai‘ele, at Honolulu Airport.

“I was just in shock. … He was such a sweetheart,” said Ramos, 25. “He never attacked anybody.”

State Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahara declined to provide details, saying the incident is still under investigation.

Securitas Security Services USA, which provides security at the airport, did not respond to a query about the airport incident.

White House appeals latest Hawaii ruling blocking travel ban

President Donald Trump’s administration today appealed the latest court ruling against his revised travel ban to the same court that refused to reinstate the original version.

A day earlier, U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii handed the government its latest defeat by issuing a longer-lasting hold on Trump’s executive order.

Watson’s decision came after the Department of Justice argued for a narrower ruling covering only the ban on new visas for people from six Muslim-majority countries. The department urged the judge to allow a freeze on the U.S. refugee program to go forward.

Government attorney Chad Readler said halting the flow of refugees had no effect on Hawaii and the state has not shown how it is harmed by the ban. Watson disagreed.

Former Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority legal counsel and friend charged with fraud

The two defendants in a recently filed, multiple-count federal indictment for money laundering, wire fraud and other charges pleaded not guilty in the federal court yesterday.

Attorney Mark Smith, former Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority legal counsel; and his friend, flight attendant Glenn Wong, appeared in the U.S. District Court in front of Judge Joaquin Manibusan.

The defendants were arrested last week on an indictment that accuses them of conspiring to hide Smith's ownership of certain houses, apartment units and a condo so he could continue to receive payments as landlord to GHURA clients, whose rent is paid by the federally funded Section 8 housing rent voucher program.

They're accused of creating real estate and bank transactions to show Smith had sold the properties to Wong and that Wong was the new landlord. However, the bank transactions allegedly showed the federally funded rent money went from Wong to Smith, the indictment states.

Wong also faces an additional charge of falsely claiming more than $680,000 cash in a bank account as his asset, when filling out a bank loan application.

Former Boy Scouts in Guam allege abuse

Peter Damian was only 9 years old when he was subjected to sexual abuse at the hands of Father Louis Brouillard, court documents state.

The Sinajana resident is the latest victim to come forward alleging the priest sexually abused young boys during Boy Scout outings.

Damian, through his local attorney Anthony C. Perez and two off-island law firms, filed a civil lawsuit in the Superior Court of Guam yesterday against the Archdiocese of Agana, the Boy Scouts of America and the Aloha Council Chamorro District. Seattle-based James, Vernon and Weeks and Honolulu-based Rosenberg McKay Hoffman filed the lawsuit with their local associate.

Brouillard was the parish priest at Santa Teresita Church in Mangilao in 1961.

May we add a separate folder in the U.S. place group for American territories?

I occasionally post stories about Guam, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Marianas Islands in the General Discussion forum. However, it would be nice if they had their own dedicated space on DU instead of getting buried in the General Discussion forum after a couple of hours. The territories are important to Democrats because they send delegates to the DNC so issues pertaining to those territories deserve better coverage. Thanks.

GovGuam to feds: Go ahead and sue

The government of Guam has essentially told the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division: See you in court.

The issue stems from the Justice Department's letter on Jan. 13, telling GovGuam that after an investigation, the federal government has found the Chamorro Land Trust Act "discriminates on the basis or race or national origin."

The Justice Department has taken a stance that the local law giving Chamorro residents an opportunity to hold land to build homes on, is considered a violation of the federal Fair Housing Act, because it limits "certain housing-related benefits to persons who are 'native Chamorros.'"

The Justice Department gave the government of Guam time to enter into a pre-lawsuit consent decree, or court-ordered agreement that corrects what the Justice Department views as a discriminatory local law, to avert getting sued.

FBI Agents Visit Office of Saipan Casino Run by Trump Protege (Northern Marianas)

Agents from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation visited an office belonging to the operator of a casino on the remote U.S. island of Saipan that has attracted attention for its huge revenues, according to a local legislator and residents.

FBI personnel, accompanied by uniformed police officers, arrived Thursday morning at a local office used by Imperial Pacific International Holdings Ltd., the Hong Kong-based company that owns the Best Sunshine Live casino, local residents said. They stayed for several hours, with local police blocking access to the building.

“There definitely was some kind of investigation or raid being done," said Ed Propst, a member of the territorial legislature. "It appears to be a joint effort between local and federal authorities."

The FBI "is not in a position to comment at this time" on any enforcement actions in Saipan, said Michele Ernst, a spokeswoman for the bureau in Hawaii, whose jurisdiction includes the island. An Imperial Pacific representative declined to confirm or deny a visit to its facility by federal law enforcement.

Trust in Northern Marianas Islands government sinks

A court in Hong Kong has found factual ties between NMI local politicians and their favorite gambling firm from the outset or 2013. What I call the “quintuplet” denied that the firm paid for their trips. This revelation only decimates or trashes trust in our governmental institutions.

The denial took a lot of fancy footing. Was it the decision granting a non-applicant exclusive rights to run a single license casino here?

Woefully troubling the deal struck that includes zero taxation of casino income. Macau levies 39 percent on its casino income. Why in the world is the casino here the only one in the global gambling industry exempt from taxation?

Perhaps the quintuplet: Raffy Torres, Biktot Hokog, and Tinian senators Francisco Cruz, Francisco Borja, and Raffy Demapan could explain why the denial of their ties with the firm. It’s only a trip, so why shy from the truth? That explains why the “tiptoe” syndrome hailing from their treatment of the casino law. It’s down to an art!
