LAPD Mum on Cop Who Pulled Gun on Anaheim Teens

Now that the Los Angeles Police Department has released the name of the off-duty officer who fired a gun near a crowd of teenagers last week in a residential neighborhood of Anaheim, the controversy has migrated to L.A.

For the past week, the voicemail greeting for the public information officer at the Anaheim Police Department has reminded those "calling to express displeasure over the video posted on YouTube" to call a separate complaint line and to "please also understand the officer works for the LAPD, not the Anaheim Police Department."

Last week, Anaheim officials bore nearly all the fallout from Officer Kevin Ferguson's aggressive actions, portions of which, including the gunshot, were filmed by some of the teens who stood by observing as the incident escalated.

Anaheim police arriving at the scene within moments after the shot was fired arrested not the off-duty LAPD officer, who fired his gun near a crowd of nearly a dozen teenagers, but rather two teenage boys, ages 13 and 15. Police later released the boys without charging them. As for Ferguson, Chief Raul Quezada said there was “insufficient evidence at the time to prove the officer's actions rose to the level of a criminal act."

More Allegations Emerge Against OC Deputy Accused of Raping Porn Star

Two more women claim they were sexually assaulted by the same sheriff's deputy facing a federal lawsuit for an alleged "atrocious," 2014, on-duty rape of Alexa Curtin, a onetime porn star who participated in Bravo's Real Housewives of Orange County.

Making national news last April, attorney Jeremy D. Jass initiated legal action against the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) and deputy Nicholas Lee Caropino, who he says told Curtin, "Show me your p*$$y," and "I am going to {screw} the sh** out of you" before ordering her to perform oral sex and mount him in the passenger seat of her vehicle.

"While in this position, deputy Caropino forced sexual intercourse with Ms. Curtin," Jass wrote. "Plaintiff was violated, traumatized, emotionally drained, in shock and fearing for her own safety."

This week inside the Ronald Reagan Federal Courthouse in Santa Ana, the Long Beach-based attorney reported that a new victim, Jane Doe #1, contacted him to allege Caropino raped her in the backseat of her vehicle during a June 2013 traffic stop in Dana Point.

Huntington Beach to Become State's First Plastic Straw-Free City?

First they came for the front porch beer drinkers, and I did not speak out—

Because I don’t have a front porch.

Then they came for the beach smokers, and I did not speak out—

Because I don’t smoke at the beach due to the lack of a pocket for a lighter in my Speedos.

Then they came for the plastic shopping bags, and I did not speak out—

Because I own tons of stock in canvas.

Then they came for my plastic straws—And there was no one left to slurp for me.

"I tried this that and whatever was on TV," she told WNEP-TV. "I exercised and did all sorts of things, and I just kept getting rounder."

Gov. Hogan declares state of emergency in heroin, opioid crisis

March 1 (UPI) -- Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency Wednesday because of a heroin and opioid "crisis," and pledged an additional $50 million in state funds over five years to deal with the epidemic.

"We need to treat this crisis the exact same way we treat any other state emergency," Hogan announced at a news conference at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency in Reisterstown. "This is actually about taking an all-hands-on-deck approach so that together we can save the lives of thousands of Marylanders."

The state of emergency will allow local emergency agencies to cut through "red tape" with more flexibility for prevention, treatment and enforcement efforts.

"The fact of the matter is that people all across Maryland, and the nation for that matter, are looking for answers when it comes to this heroin and opioid epidemic," Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford, who heads the governor's Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force, said at the news conference.

UAW orders thousands of Caterpillar workers to stay on the job as contract expires

The United Auto Workers (UAW) ordered its members at Caterpillar, Inc. to continue working Tuesday night as its previous six-year contract with the heavy equipment manufacturer expired.

In a statement released shortly before the midnight contract expiration, the UAW wrote, “The UAW/CAT Bargaining Committee continues to work hard at the bargaining table. We have agreed to continue working beyond the expiration of the contract in hopes of achieving an agreement in the best interest of all members.”

Caterpillar released a similar statement, saying, “Although we have not yet reached an agreement, we have agreed to work without a contract while negotiating outstanding issues. Both parties remain at the bargaining table, focused on reaching a fair and reasonable agreement…Securing the right agreement is our team’s highest priority, and we’ll use this extra time to ensure we do it well.”

Seeking to intimidate workers and prevent them from taking any wildcat action, UAW Local 751 in Decatur, Illinois, posted on Facebook, “Work is to remain business as usual until directed otherwise. Your job is not protected if you walk out while negotiations are still in process.”

A North Carolina man accused of a homophobic hate crime in Florida has been located, arrested, and extradited to Key West. Brandon Ray Davis, 30, was arrested Wednesday morning. He is accused of attacking a couple in Key West while riding a rented scooter.

Kevin Seymour and Kevin Price told police the attacker yelled at them, “You guys are a couple of fags,” “I bet you fa**ots voted for that b***h Hillary,” and, “You live in Trump country now,” the Miami Herald reports.

He also allegedly threatened to "cut you up" when the couple threatened to call the police.

Davis reportedly struck Seymour to the ground when his scooter hit Seymour's bike. He is being charged with a hate crime, and the scooter is being classified as a deadly weapon.

Sportscaster Dale Hansen Rips Phobes Over Transgender Wrestler Mack Beggs

You may remember Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen, who went viral in 2012 with a video excoriating NFL executives for their predictions that Michael Sam’s draft stock would go down after he came out as gay.

Well Hansen is back with some more strong words, this time for UIL, the governing agency for public school sports in Texas, and their antiquated policies on transgender athletes.

If you’ve not heard the story about Mack Beggs, here’s a quick catch-up:

Transgender teen Mack Beggs of Euless Trinity High won the individual 110lb state title in girls wrestling over the weekend outside of Houston. Beggs, 17, identifies as male, receives doctor prescribed testosterone hormone treatment and wanted to wrestle boys. UIL rules required Beggs to compete in the girls division.

Parents expressed frustration at the dynamic saying the hormone therapy Beggs receives gave the junior a competitive advantage. Lisa Latham’s daughter lost to Beggs on Friday and said the wrestler should be allowed to compete with boys.

“I’m frustrated that times are changing and UIL is still in the dark ages,” Lisa Latham said.

Texas Republicans Attempt to Hijack CPS Reform with Racist Amendment Backfires

Sparks flew Wednesday at the state Capitol after a Republican lawmaker tried to score political points by attaching an anti-immigrant amendment to a major bill aimed at reforming the state’s failing child welfare system.

The controversy erupted while members were considering 12 amendments to House Bill 4, which would increase support payments to relatives who take in abused or neglected children. The amendment, by Representative Mark Keough, R-The Woodlands, sought to prevent those payments from going to undocumented family members.

Republicans and Democrats, who have made reforming Child Protective Services (CPS) a priority this session, immediately pushed back against Keough’s amendment. Legislators called the proposal “racist,” detrimental to abused kids and “un-Christian.” Keough is a pastor at The Woodlands Bible Church who has claimed his election to the House was “divine appointment.”

“I am pretty heartbroken to be part of this today,” said Representative Byron Cook, R-Corsicana. “We came here to take care of children. I feel like crying. I really do.”
