I've never gone to one and I'm watching football this afternoon and have seen a couple of commercials for Hooters. My question is what percentage of their customers are women?
Why I like small businesses
Since 1985 I have had a mechanic that has taken care of my cars. They were all vehicles I bought used and he did a great job. He was 2 blocks from my then home. Very much an urban area. Even when I moved 8 years ago, I still went to him, distance now is about 6 miles. Whatever parts I needed, he let me know and allowed me to go down to the auto parts store and buy them, about 3 blocks from him. Once when I needed struts, he told me to go down to the local junkyard, about 2 miles from him & get the struts. Cheaper there than at the auto parts store.
When I started going to the garage his father ran the operation. His dad retired (still hung around), and he took over. Last time I was there I saw his son (about 20) working with his dad. Besides the owner, there were 3 other mechanics, he paid them daily and sometimes they would be gone for a week or 2 but they'd be back. This garage will be around for at least another generation. I drove by it today & saw that it had an all new painted front. It looked great.
I've not gone to him in 2 years, because I bought a new car and it's under warranty. I do however, miss going there, I would walk across the street get a cup of coffee and go back & hang out until my car was done. No nice waiting area, I sat on the stoop of the building. No repair was ever over $250.
Once a year, here in Pennsylvania you need a mechanical and an emissions inspection of your car. This garage did not have the equipment for an emissions, so he would send me up the hill to another garage where the emissions would be done. This garage is a one man operation, he has 2 bays for repairs. So every year this owner did the emissions on my car.
Now on this new vehicle, I get free life-time mechanical inspections but I would have to pay for the emissions. Now I know it would be much easier & more time efficient If I let the dealer do both, but this guy is a small businessman hustling to make a living and I know my $42.80 isn't going to make or break him, but it doesn't hurt. And I don't have to make an appointment, just show up & within a half hour the test is done.
So earlier today I went to his shop and walked in. He looked up, saw me & the first words out of his mouth were "I was just thinking about you today." That's why I go. He only sees me in September, but he knows I'm going to show up.
These 2 garages are the backbone of America. Two men hustling to make a living, one employing a couple of guys, the other a one man operation, who's doing ok.
Did I hear this correctly?.........
I watched less than 5 minutes of Chris Matthews on "Hardball". He of course was discussing the Romney debacle, but he added the following quote from Sarah Palin, either on her twitter or facebook page:
"Obama doesn't carry a big stick, but maybe he should grown one."
Does anyone find this statement somehow sexually provocative and inappropriate?
What my 82 year old mother won't say
Last month I posted the following over in GD.
A direct quote from my 82 year old mother in regard to the NYC shootings.........
Mom is listening to Mayor Bloomberg and yells at him "you can get rid of the fucking soda, but you can't get rid of the god damn guns."
What word my mother won't say: "cock" she even spelled it out. When did she become a prude?
Made my groupies happy today, I hope.......
I posted earlier this week that I have a couple in their '80's who look forward to my letters to the editor that get published. I hope I made them happy today.

Economic truth

I just have to respond to GOP pollster Kellyanne Conway's Sept. 2 article "The GOP Can Win Women."
The subheadline states that Democrats address women only below the waist, when what they want are smart economic policies.
The Democrats understand that women cannot realize any economic success without the freedom to control the bottom half of their bodies. The GOP can talk all it wants to women about the economy and women having success in it, but until the GOP removes its anti-choice rhetoric from its platform it will fail in having women believe that the GOP is the party that stands for them.
Without the right to control our reproductive ability, we will have a delayed education, delayed entrance into the work force and a delay in achieving economic success.
The true GOP agenda appears to derail women from economic freedom and equality by controlling the bottom half of their bodies. So no matter what Ms. Conway and other GOP-ers say, women truly know what they are all about.
Women know by President Barack Obama's actions (the Lilly Ledbetter Act) and the Democratic platform that the Democrats are firmly resolved that women attain true economic success.
Women also know that attempts to improve the economy have been delayed and derailed by John Boehner, Eric Cantor, U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy and every other U.S. representative who puts an R after his or her name. Women are not stupid. However, Ms. Conway's article seems to talk down to women and make us appear to be stupid -- that somehow we don't know the truth of each party and what each stands for.
It is truth and freedom that women want. The Democratic Party gives it to women, the Republicans do not.

My youngest nephew is registered to vote.........
I have 8 nieces & nephews. The youngest will be 18 in early October. He sent in his voter registration forms about 2 1/2 months ago as he will be 18 before the November election.
I have been checking the data base for the last month & even call the elections dept. They held up sending him his card, as there was a special election in the county in early August, that he would not be eligible to vote in. However, this special election was not in his district.
Well I checked the data base last night, and he is registered. I texted my congratulations to him. The only thing worrying me, is that we're in PA and he does not have a photo ID. He is planning on taking his Driver's test in October, if he passes he will have his ID. I have plans for him to vote absentee, in case he doesn't have that ID.
I am worried about the 18 year old high school students across the state who may have a high school ID, but no DL. Under the PA law, a high school ID is not considered a valid ID.
Michigan labor has a victory
Read below from Reuters. The Michigan Supreme Court is allowing a referendum to appear on the November 6 ballot.
(Reuters) - The Michigan Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday a measure that would enshrine the right to collective bargaining in the state constitution can be placed on the November 6 ballot, a victory for labor unions in the state that is home to major auto companies.
The measure, backed by organized labor, asks the voters of Michigan to decide whether collective bargaining of labor contracts should be a right guaranteed by the state constitution.
The state's Republican governor and attorney general opposed the proposed referendum, arguing that it would have serious implications for a host of other laws and was too complex to explain on the ballot.
But the state high court said supporters of the measure met the requirements of state law for placing it on the November ballot.

Does anyone have a link to Michelle Obama's speech.......
I fell asleep right after she came on stage. I wasn't feeling well yesterday. My 82 year old Mom watched the whole speech and thought it was the best she had heard in a long time. I can't discuss it with Mom, since I missed it.
I learned that I have "groupies".........
This past weekend I learned that I have groupies. My sister-in-law told me that a few weeks ago at the Parish Festival, a couple in their mid '80's asked her if (my name redacted) was related to her & her husband. She told them of the relationship. The couple said "We lover her letters to the editor, we look forward to seeing them, her last letter about unions and Wisconsin was wonderful."
In their honor I sent a letter to the editor last night in regard to an oped piece they had. If it gets published I'll let you know.

I am responding to Joann Prion's June 12 letter, "Unions' Partners." Her words that unions have raped the taxpayers for years is totally off base and out of touch with reality.
Within the state of Wisconsin, the money that Gov. Scott Walker took from union members was the amount of money that he awarded in tax breaks to big business. It is politicians who have assaulted and abused taxpayers, not unions.
Unions, specifically those representing public-sector workers, are reasonable. I have never seen a union advocate for tax increases so their members could have pay increases.
It is politicians like Gov. Tom Corbett who attack citizens. Gov. Corbett's refusal to allow local government to tax Marcellus Shale takes money away from the community for schools and infrastructure. Don't blame unions for this.
Gov. Corbett is giving Shell Oil a billion-dollar tax break. This is money that could be used for the benefit of communities. Who is going to pay for the added traffic and added pollution that this development will produce? Don't blame it on the unions.
Why are people so afraid of putting the blame right square where it belongs? Why have unions suddenly become the scapegoat for the bad that is happening?
Praise unions for the work they have done, and the work they will achieve. Don't spout what you hear on right-wing radio. It is false.
