Valentine's Day Google Logo Celebrates Love Of All Kinds, including same sex.

more here

Google is doodling again, this time in honor of Valentine's Day.

Visit the search engine's homepage this February 14, and you'll stumble upon more than just a simple illustration. Today's Google Doodle is a full-blown, minute-long animation that ranks up there with some of Google's most creative -- quite a feat, considering other doodles released in the recent past.

According to TechCrunch, the Valentine's Day logo is thanks in part to Michael Lipman, the doodle's animator. Lipman had only three weeks to complete it, as opposed to the nine or 10 weeks it would normally take. However, he somehow managed to pull it off.

The result of his speedy and valiant efforts is a cute doodle devoid of dialogue. But what it lacks in words, it makes up for with Tony Bennett's rendition of Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart" and an adorable storyline featuring a lovesick boy striving to win the heart of an apathetic, jump-roping girl. (“That was every girl I met up until college ... ,” said Lipman, according to The Washington Post.) The protagonist desperately queries Google for ideas that might impress the girl, but a rose, a box of chocolates, a sweater, a balloon animal, and a handful of other offerings don't seem to capture the girl's attention. It isn't until the boy gives up on the gifts and jump-ropes next to her that she finally stops and notices him for the first time, and together they jump-rope until the video's end, when the frame is filled with snapshots of unlikely love stories (a dog and a cat, a princess and a frog, an alien and an astronaut and more). This short and sweet story seems to be an admission from Google that even it can't find the right answers when it comes to love.

^^ The Vid.

Kudos to Google for being inclusive.

Do iOS Apps Crash More Than Android Apps? A Data Dive

Ever wonder why certain mobile apps you use crash so much?
It turns out there are many possible reasons. And it can vary particularly depending on whether you are using an Apple iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad, or an Android device.
In the top quartile of apps, Android apps crashed 0.15% of the time they launched, while top quartile iOS apps crashed 0.51% of the time. In the second quartile of apps, Android apps crashed 0.73% of the time and iOS apps crashed 1.47% of their launches. In the third quartile of apps, Android apps crashed 2.97% of the time, while iOS apps crashed 3.66% of the time.
when you get to the top apps, Android’s lower app crash rate than iOS makes less of a difference because they are both well below 1%. However, there was a bigger difference between iOS and Android app crashes in the top quartile of apps than in the third quartile. In other words, the best apps in Android crashed about one third as many times as the best iOS apps, while the second best quartile Android apps crashed about half as much as comparable iOS apps, and in the quartile, the difference between the two operating systems was even less. So the very top Android apps are achieving a crash rate that, at least in this time period, the best iOS apps can’t match. Why that is, I’m not entirely clear.

However, Android, it should be noted, allows developers to push updates faster than Apple. With Android developers can just send an update to its code, which can show up almost in real-time. But for iOS it can takes days or a week for an update to show up. That means there can be more app crashes while those updates are waiting to happen. Whereas with Android, presumably if developers know there’s a bug they can immediately fix it.

Just goes on to show the Apple claim that it "just works" is and has been never a truthful one. Its a marketing ploy that Millions fall victim to ...and end up paying $$$ more than their peers who use the products of Apple competitors.

French court fines Google France 500,000 Euros for gratis Maps

A Parisian commercial court has upheld a lower court's ruling against Google France, ordering the company to pay a fine of €500,000 for giving away its maps services. The plaintiff, Bottin Cartographes, claims that Google leveraged the market share of its Maps platform -- and the fact that it's free -- to undercut and stifle competition attempting to sell their topographical wares. "We proved the illegality of [Google's] strategy," said Bottin's counsel, noting that this was the first time Google has been convicted of malfeasance for this particular piece of software in the country. A representative from the search giant said it plans to appeal the decision, and reiterated the company's belief that competition exists in the space. Personally, we think the court got it right. Why should people get an awesome product for free when they can pay for an inferior one, right?

I'm Speechless.

Google maps, and its turn-by-turn navigation(Both free) are way better by orders of magnitude than any of the paid navigation/mapping services out there(at least the ones available to the public). Real time traffic updates..built in street view...etc etc...all free. Now Google has to pay a fine for giving it out for free.

Look at the IOS/Iphone. Apple doesn't want to support Google's Free turn by turn navigation/maps app, so Millions of Iphone users have to shell out $$$ to buy inferior navigation products.

Old Media/tech practices/models of Business should be thrown out the window...not propped up by fining companies which go against traditional corporate-friendly business models. On a related note, this is a reason why I will never be an Iphone user...dont want to pay through my nose for services which are inferior to free ones available on Android.

Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims Blast Rick Santorum On 'Equality' Comment

Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus are accusing Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum of bigotry and ignorance after he said that “equality” is solely a Judeo-Christian concept.

“Where do you think the concept of equality comes from?” Santorum said on the campaign trail last Friday (Jan. 20). “It doesn’t come from Islam. It doesn’t come from the East and Eastern religions. It comes from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Not everyone agreed.

“Sen. Santorum’s presidential campaign is now playing to the lowest common denominator of religious bigotry and prejudice by attacking Eastern religions and Islam,” said Aseem Shukla of the Hindu American Foundation. Santorum’s comments, Shukla added, “show a profound ignorance of the teachings of Dharma spiritual traditions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.”

Santorum’s campaign did not answer repeated requests for comment.

Arkansas Democrat's cat killed, painted with "liberal"

LITTLE ROCK, Ark (Reuters) - A cat belonging to an Arkansas Democratic campaign manager was found dead on Sunday night with the word "Liberal" spray-painted across its side, the campaign manager said.

The cat was a pet of Jake Burris, who manages Democrat Ken Aden's bid for Arkansas' 3rd Congressional District. Aden is running against incumbent Republican Representative Steve Womack.

The Russellville Police Department is investigating the incident as an animal cruelty case, according to a police official. Russellville is 80 miles west of Little Rock.

Pirates! Rupert Murdoch Rails About Obama, Google and Silicon Valley

On Friday, Rupert Murdoch and his top executives gathered for a daylong private confab in Las Vegas to think big thoughts about digital stuff. I’m guessing there wasn’t a session entitled “How Great is Google?”

On Saturday, the News Corp. CEO used his new Twitter account to rail against the search giant, call it a “piracy leader,” and gripe that it had too much influence in Washington, and the White House, in particular. (Here we need to remind you that News Corp. owns this Web site.) Business Insider has all four of his “Internet makes me angry” tweets (Update: He’s back at it! More below), including the one he deleted, but here are the two relevant ones:
The obvious point to make here is that Murdoch’s venting (which his legal and PR handlers would love to quell, but can’t) was spurred by the White House statement which deflated the SOPA and PIPA antipiracy bills today. It’s also not the first time Murdoch has sounded off about Google.

Expect more such comments from him and the supporters of SOPA/PIPA as that draconian law goes down the drain.
Do these antiquated Media Moguls really think they can control the internet? I love to see how they are trying to prop up their predatory business model by trying to shackle the Free internet/Internet companies.

PS: for a quick overview of why PIPA/SOPA are not good, check this infographic out

What is SOPA(Stop online piracy act) and Why it should be opposed.( Infographic)

PS: for a quick breakdown on how the Big labels/media corporations prey on music/media artists, check this infographic out.

The Media companies and 'record labels" take the biggest cut of any sale. SOPA/PIPA is not about saving artists or musicians..they are all about retaining the stranglehold they have historically had on content providers. Newer Internet-company based business models are undercutting them, and the SOPA/PIPA is the Media-mogul's way of trying to muscle competition out. For example, only about 10% of sales revenue go to artists in the current model, while for example the Google music model gives 70% of the revenue to the artist.... and there are indie online-record labels which give about 90% of the revenue to the artists. No wonder the established recording labels are upset.

What is SOPA(Stop online piracy act) and Why it should be opposed.( Infographic)

Here are a couple of Info-graphics detailing the reasons people oppose SOPA. Many companies try to explain away SOPA as something that merely prevents people from illegally downloading content. However it gives the government and media companies overarching rights to not only censor your websites and posts, but also to block your access to information...and even read your email without permission. Furthermore SOPA will give its supporters the right to take down your website even without a court order.
For example, if a few people post Youtube video's containing copyrighted songs on DU, DU could be taken down!..even though it's no fault of DU.

If SOPA passes, it will be the end of the internet as we know it. In fact we will be a monitored and censored society no different from China.

BSA(Business Software Alliance) is one of the major groups supporting SOPA. It includes the following companies(based on their member list)
members of the BSA

Bentley Systems
CNC Software - Mastercam
Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corporation
Progress Software
Quest Software
Rosetta Stone
Siemens PLM Software, Inc.
The MathWorks

Kaspersky is the only BSA member company that openly opposed the SOPA, and it left the BSA as a sign of protest.

We do not support illegal downloads. We merely want our first amendment rights protected.
Please oppose SOPA and keep the internet free.

PS: There is an Android app available for free, listing all the companies/products supporting SOPA. A DU member has created a thread on it. It could be found in the following link

An Android app that terrifies the politicians and corporations: Boycott SOPA

Yey! Asian group welcome thread!

Thank you Skinner for creating this Sub-group ; and Thank you AsahinaKimi for being instrumental in proposing this idea and harnessing support for such a group.

As a DU-er of (South)Asian origin, allow me to be the first to show you our appreciation by starting this thread.
