John Pilger: Nato's action plan in Ukraine is right out of Dr Strangelove (Russia & China)

Nato's action plan in Ukraine is right out of Dr Strangelove
From China to Ukraine, the US is pursuing its longstanding ambition to dominate the Eurasian landmass

John Pilger
The Guardian, Thursday 17 April 2014 16.41 BST

What is certain is that Barack Obama’s rapacious coup in Ukraine has ignited a civil war and Vladimir Putin is being lured into a trap.' Photograph: Anatoliy Stepanov/AFP/Getty Images

...

A Nato membership action plan – straight from the war room of Dr Strangelove – is General Breedlove's gift to the new dictatorship in Ukraine. "Rapid Trident" will put US troops on Ukraine's Russian border and "Sea Breeze" will put US warships within sight of Russian ports. At the same time, Nato war games in eastern Europe are designed to intimidate Russia. Imagine the response if this madness was reversed and happened on the US's borders. Cue General Turgidson.

And there is China. On 23 April, Obama will begin a tour of Asia to promote his "pivot" to China. The aim is to convince his "allies" in the region, principally Japan, to rearm and prepare for the possibility of war with China. By 2020, almost two-thirds of all US naval forces in the world will be transferred to the Asia-Pacific area. This is the greatest military concentration in that vast region since the second world war.

In an arc extending from Australia to Japan, China will face US missiles and nuclear-armed bombers. A strategic naval base is being built on the Korean island of Jeju, less than 400 miles from Shanghai and the industrial heartland of the only country whose economic power is likely to surpass that of the US. Obama's "pivot" is designed to undermine China's influence in its region. It is as if a world war has begun by other means.

This is not a Dr Strangelove fantasy. Obama's defence secretary, Charles "Chuck" Hagel, was in Beijing last week to deliver a warning that China, like Russia, could face isolation and war if it did not bow to US demands. He compared the annexation of Crimea to China's complex territorial dispute with Japan over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. "You cannot go around the world," said Hagel with a straight face, "and violate the sovereignty of nations by force, coercion or intimidation." As for America's massive movement of naval forces and nuclear weapons to Asia, that is "a sign of the humanitarian assistance the US military can provide".

Thanks Raksha. I just updated Koko's thread with some information that might interest you

Koko's thread in GD: "Ukraine Is Not Ordering Its Jews to Register"

I spent several hours looking into this and made several posts. My last post, Letter from NCSJ. Also there are 3 similar leaflets, has me boiling mad.

Time Magazine reported that this is "Either a Hoax or a Crude Extortion Scheme".

And Bandera, just so you have a little more information, whenever you see those red and black flags in Kiev like in this picture when the neonazis were besieging the Parliament for the coup, those are Bandera flags.

A sick quote from Kiev’s newly-appointed deputy head of south-eastern Ukraine

“This scum should be given promises, guarantees, and any concessions…And hung…They should be hung later,” Filatov, a lawyer and a businessman, wrote on his Facebook page commenting on events in Crimea. He did not clarify who exactly he classifies as “scum.”

The post – particularly its part on “hang them later” – drew wide media attention. Filatov was quick to note though that he was writing “not as an official.”

...

“I am proud of Bandera. He is my Hero. Particularly, as I see that people are ready to die under red-and-black flags,” Filatov stated.

http://rt.com/news/ukraine-dnepropetrovsk-crimea-protest-458/

They go out of their way to honor Bandera every chance they get, proudly waving that flag of Nazi collaboration and when it's banned by FIFA as a racist symbol, here's how they tried to get around that

in Ukraine today, it is equally misleading to state that the nationalist right represents a “minor segment” of the current protests. The protest leadership (to the extent that it exists) consists of three opposition parties in parliament – one of which, the Svoboda party, is clearly on the far right. Svoboda, which captured 38 seats and 10 percent of the vote in the last parliamentary elections, until 2004 called itself the Social Nationalist Party of Ukraine and employed neo-Nazi and SS symbols. While the party changed its name and symbols in 2004, Svoboda’s leader, Oleh Tyahnybok, continued to argue that the opposition should fight the “Muscovite-Jewish mafia running Ukraine” and praised the Ukrainian Insurgency Army (UPA) in World War II for fighting “against the Moskali (Muscovites), Germans, Zhydy (Jews) and other scum, who wanted to take away our Ukrainian state.” The party does not hide its glorification of the interwar fascist movement, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). In December they held a torchlight rally on the Maidan to honor the OUN leader, Stepan Bandera, and they regularly fly the red and black flag of the OUN, which has been banned as a racist symbol at soccer matches by FIFA.

The explicit harkening back to the songs, slogans, and symbols of the nationalist movement of the 1930s and 1940s — with its aspiration to achieve an ethnically pure Ukrainian nation-state free of Russians, Jews, and Poles — has been one of the most significant differences between these protests and the Orange Revolution of 2004. The right-wing groups have been particularly active among the organization of the protest movement on the ground, particularly as the number of protesters has dwindled over time and revealed a resilient right-wing core. Svoboda’s deputies control the opposition-occupied Kiev city administration building, its flag is widely visible and a portrait of Bandera hangs in the central hall.

UKRAINE UPDATE #22

On the evening of April 15, official-looking documents were circulated in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, calling on Jews to register with the Nationalities Commissioner and pay $50 or lose their citizenship and face deportation. Three individuals wearing ski masks and the flag of the Russian Federation were seen distributing the flyers near the Donetsk synagogue.

The leaflets read:

“Dear citizens of Jewish nationality! Due to the fact that leaders of the Jewish Community of Ukraine support the Bandera junta in Kiev and are hostile to the Orthodox Donetsk Republic and its citizens, the main headquarters of the Donetsk Republic declares the following:

• Every citizen of Jewish nationality older than 16 years, residing in the territory of a sovereign Donetsk Republic has to go to Donetsk Regional Administrator to see the Nationalities Commissioner, Office 514, for registration. The registration fee is $50.
• Persons should have with them with cash in the amount of $50 for registration, a passport to mark their religion, and documents of family members, as well as ownership documents for their properties and vehicles.
• In case of failure to register, the perpetrators will lose their citizenship and will be deported outside the republic, with their property confiscated.”

A leaflet distributed in Donetsk, Ukraine, calls for all Jewish people over 16 years-old to register as Jews.

The flyers were signed in the name of Denis Pushilin, the leader of Donetsk’s pro-Russian separatists, who led the takeover of several government buildings and claimed the city as the Donetsk Republic.

NCSJ has contacted the Donetsk Jewish community leaders, who called the flyers a provocation. They said that all authorities have denied any connection to the flyers, and that Pushilin has denied authorship.

Several members of the community went to the Nationalities Commissioner, who repudiated the flyer, and said that the leaflets were distributed to cause unrest among the Jewish population.

Similar leaflets were distributed targeting international students at the local university.

In addition to the local community, NCSJ has been in regular contact with the State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Kiev on the issue of the flyers.

NCSJ will continue to monitor the situation in Donetsk and throughout Ukraine, and provide you with timely and critical updates.

The letter states there was a similar flyer that was "distributed targeting international students at the local university" and earlier today I found evidence of another flyer that was targeting the business community and demanding $70 (US dollars in cash) as a protection fee.

Now I understand better why Time reported Either a Hoax or a Crude Extortion Scheme.

In the past few days, he added, similar fliers have been handed around to businessmen and foreign students in Donetsk. So all of this seems to be part of rather sloppy extortion scheme.

In a long, debunking article, Shimon Briman reports that it was not the first time such leaflets were distributed in the area in recent days. Business owners in Donetsk were purportedly approached with a warning leaflet between April 14 and 16 and asked to pay a flat fee of U.S. $70 for protection or risk being attacked. The stamp at the bottom of the two leaflets match almost exactly.

The same site also noted that the language in both documents leans heavily on a play by the Strugatsky brothers, called “Jews of the city of Peter, or Sad conversation by candlelight.” Arkady and Boris Strugatsky were a famous Russian science-fiction writing pair, and the forum daily.com post surmises that whoever created the two documents must have been very familiar with the works of the two brothers, and is most likely a well-read individual.

The piece dissects some of the play’s dialogue, showing how it parallels the language in the leaflets, and offers up this opinion: “It’s unlikely that such intellectuals are now in the headquarters of the so-called ‘Donetsk republic.’ The author of these provocative leaflets is a creative person, prone to extraordinary and theatrical gestures, who decided to re-enact the fiction of these literary brothers–not on stage, but in real life.”

Unless the hoaxer is bent on garnering some personal publicity, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever find out who did create the flyers, but what’s for sure is that in such a political tinder-box, a joke like this is all that’s required to set off a crisis.

https://www.vocativ.com/world/ukraine-world/anti-semitic-ukraine-flyer-literary-hoax/

Also, Pushilin never said it was his people who distributed the flyer. That was either a poor or a deliberate mistranslation in the US press. What he said is that "fliers were distributed under his organization's name in Donetsk but denied any connection to them, Ynet reported in Hebrew."

He also said whoever distributed them were "degenerates":

«Какие-то уроды вчера раздавали по торговым точкам калининского района… Но даже здесь плохо сработали — я себя никогда не называл народным губернатором… А Мацука, который это разместил на сайте новости дн юа — это известный донецкий грантоед...», — сказал медиа-проекту «Киев еврейский» Денис Пушилин.

"Some degenerates distributed them around Kalinin district yesterday ... But even here it barely worked - I never call myself the people's governor ... But Matsuka who distributed these photos on news sites is a well-known Donetsk politician" - Denis Pushilin told our paper "Kiev Jewish".

Time: Ukraine’s ‘Jew Register’ Either a Hoax or a Crude Extortion Scheme

Ukraine’s ‘Jew Register’ Either a Hoax or a Crude Extortion Scheme

Simon Shuster / Donetsk @shustry

5:31 PM ET

A few anti-Semitic fliers in eastern Ukraine made global news after the U.S. Secretary of State spoke out against them. But on the evidence on display in Donetsk, the Jews of eastern Ukraine are in little danger

The news of pro-Russian thugs trying to impose a tax on Jews first appeared on Wednesday morning on a small, local news website in eastern Ukraine called Novosti Donbassa. Along with a photo of a neo-Nazi throwing the Hitler salute, the website offered the story of three masked goons hanging around a synagogue in the city of Donetsk and handing out anti-Semitic fliers to local Jews. The site even ran a photo of the flier, which demanded that Jewish residents of Donetsk show up to “register,” pay a fee of “50 American dollars,” and offer proof of any property they own in the region. It all looked like a crude joke.

But even though Novosti Donbassa is not the most reliable source even by the less than exacting standards of Ukrainian media, the story was apparently too scandalous to ignore. It ricocheted around the Internet on Wednesday before winding up in the Israeli press and, finally, on the website of USA Today. By Thursday evening, the article had reached U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who commented on it during high-level talks in Geneva. “In the year 2014, after all of the miles traveled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable, it’s grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable,” Kerry told reporters after talks meant to resolve the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine. By that point, this flier was making news around the world.

But even if it looked like the start of some racist purge, the flier was more likely part of an ill-conceived extortion plot or a propaganda ploy against the separatists. For one thing, the sign-off at the bottom of the flier — “Yours, the People’s Governor of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin” — seemed off. This was a reference to the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, which was formed a week and a half ago by a group of armed separatists who seized the headquarters of the regional government. Theirs is perhaps the smallest breakaway republic in the world, as its territory is confined to that one building and a small patch of the plaza around it. Since April 7, they have barricaded themselves inside with a cache of weapons and demanded a referendum on secession from Ukraine. At the bottom of the flier was a reproduction of the stamp these separatists use on the press badges they have issued to journalists.

Boxer nailed it- " could well be part of a sick strategy to foment even more unrest in Ukraine"

In a statement to National Journal, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said "Secretary Kerry's statement reflects my disgust, dismay, and disbelief that in this century we would see such an attack on the Jewish people. The fact that no group or individual is taking responsibility tells me that it could well be part of a sick strategy to foment even more unrest in Ukraine."

The cynicism of people bent on war apparently has no limits.

"It’s a fake flyer" (National Conference Supporting Jews) and GET ISRAEL ON BOARD!

"All citizens of Jewish nationality over age of 16, living on territories of Donetsk People's Republic, have to register with DPR commissioner of nationality before May 3rd, 2014 at the Donetsk Regional Administration, room 514, registration fee is $50," the leaflet reads, according to a CNN translation of the document.

"Must have in person $50 cash, passport, all available IDs, and documentation of ownership of real estate and transportation."

...

But Pushilin denied any connection to the leaflets, calling the incident a "clear provocation."

Pushilin told CNN the handwriting on the flier wasn't his, and the title attached to his name was not one he uses. And the Jewish community in Donetsk said the act "smells like a provocation."

50 DOLLARS? Lol! And on letterhead paper with a bad signature! The U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, told CNN’s Jake Tapper that the leaflets were likely distributed by radicals..... Likely? Three masked men in black blackavas sounds pretty radical to me.

And when Anna Nemtsova, a reporter for the Daily Beast went to the administration office where the fliers instructed Jews to go pay the registration fee on Thursday, she found the room was empty.

The notice explained the measure as being due to the alleged support of Jewish leaders for the "nationalist junta of Stepan Bandera in Kiev" and their hostility "to the Orthodox Donetsk republic and its citizens."

The propaganda coming from Kiev is so amateurish. It beggars belief and it beggars belief that Kerry would take this and immediately run with it on the world stage without any fact-checking. What next? Brennan at a UN meeting waving this pamphlet around?

in a statement sent to Mashable on Thursday afternoon, the Anti-Defamation League questioned its authenticity, while condemning the "cynical" messaging it contained.

"The ADL today condemned the appearance of anti-Semitic fliers in Donetsk, Ukraine, and called on all parties involved in the political conflicts in Ukraine to refrain from 'cynical and politically manipulative' exploitation of anti-Semitism," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.

"We are skeptical about the flier’s authenticity, but the instructions clearly recall the Nazi era and have the effect of intimidating the local Jewish community," he said.

“We have seen a series of cynical and politically manipulative uses and accusations of anti-Semitism in Ukraine over the past year,” said Mr. Foxman. “The perpetrators and their targets are opposing politicians and political movements, but the true victims are the Jewish communities. We strongly condemn the anti-Semitic content, but also all attempts to use anti-Semitism for political purposes.”

The timing of this is so convenient too.

Israel refuses to get dragged into our "quagmire" (their words), refuses to back down and align themselves with a bunch of neonazis in the Ukrainian putsch government and suddenly appears this mysterious pamphlet after the Tatar card failed and after elite Ukrainian troops refused to shoot at civilians in East Ukraine (they're all getting courtmartialed now).

After pressure from the United States government, the Israeli government issued its first official statement on the crisis in Ukraine Wednesday night. In its laconic statement, Israel did not comment on the Russian invasion into Crimea but only underscored that it hopes the crisis will be solved peacefully.

Less than two year ago the Israeli government was complaining to Kiev about the rise of Svoboda and other neonazi elements. No sense expecting Israel to be too pleased about having bona fide "88" lapel pin wearers occupying important posts in a European government. For our government to now whine about Israel not supporting us in the UN is beyond pitiful.

Israel skipped out on both UN meetings to condemn Russia leaving the US seething. Haaretz' headline summed it up a few days ago "U.S. officials angry: Israel doesn’t back stance on Russia"

US angry with Israel's 'neutrality' over Ukrainian crisis
13 April 2014

US officials expressed anger over Israel's policy of "non-interference" with the Russian annexation of the Crimea; Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported.

A US official told the paper that the White House was disappointed with Israel's absence from the UN General Assembly meeting two weeks ago to vote on condemning Russia's military invasion of the Crimea and call to maintain Ukraine's territorial integrity.

"We have been consulting closely on Ukraine not only with our partners and allies around the world. Obviously we are looking to the entire international community to condemn Russia's actions and to support Ukraine, so we were surprised to see that Israel did not join the large majority of countries that voted to support Ukraine's territorial integrity at the United Nations. Israel's justification that it did not attend the meeting due to the Foreign Ministry strike is unacceptable" said the senior US official.

The US official said that Washington is particularly angry with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's failure to publically support the US position on the crisis.

According to Haaretz the US is especially disappointed with FM Lieberman who equated Israel's relations with the United States to its relations with Russia. Lieberman is reported to have told Channel 9 that Israel has "good and trusting relations with the Americans and the Russians, and our experience has been very positive with both sides". The official said "I do not understand this point of view, which calls for Israel to be dragged into this quagmire".

Israel is very wise not to get involved and jeopardize its good relations with Russia, a country that has the world's 6th largest Jewish population.

But Quick quick! Look over here! We have a pamphlet! Forget about what kind of swine we're backing in Kiev. Forget about disastrous photo ops with bona fide Nazis like this

I posted this back in early March but it was inconvenient to the war propaganda effort

As in the 30s, we're assured not to worry, that it's just a small group, nothing to see here

Sick shit. Note all the SS Svoboda flags.

This is nasty nasty stuff.

Heck, they've even got a university. David Duke speaks there often and has an honorary degree from it but they don't think anyone should worry about such "a small aspect" (minute 5). This video as part of a 12 part series produced in 2011.

and other stuff like this. The denials, as if people couldn't see the 88 lapel pins or figure out just what kind of a salute the head of Svoboda, Oleh Tyahnybok, is giving in his publicity pics, are disgraceful.

Victoria Nuland got her photo op with with Oleh Tyahnybok. I think Merkel, Rasmussen, Hollande, Cameron, Kerry, McCain, Hillary, Obama and everyone supporting that putsch should get one too.

US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland together Neo Nazi Svoboda leader Oleh Tyahnybok (left)

Svoboda neo Nazi leader Oleh Tyahnybok giving the Sieg Heil

Here, a closeup of that 88 Heil Hitler lapel pin. I have an even more focused one but can't find it right now.

Svoboda proper has 4 positions in the putsch government. Gives you the warm fuzzies doesn't it? How could this not be a problem for Israel?

Now we have a mysterious pamphlet as if that will make Israel come to its "senses" or something and getting everyone else all hysterical.

A flyer demanding that Jews in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk register with its pro-Russian government is “fake,” a Jewish advocacy group with direct contacts in the region tells the Daily Dot.

“It’s a fake flyer,” says Lesley Weiss, deputy director of the National Conference Supporting Jews (NCSJ), which focuses its efforts on Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic States.

Lol! Israel refuses to support the US/EU position so this fakery is the best they can do?

There's been almost total silence from US politicians and the US Media over Israel's decision to abstain from voting at the UN in the vote to condemn Russia's annexation of the Crimea. Even before the UN sessions, Israel was refusing to get on board and, despite immense pressure, only issued a statement that they hoped things would be resolved peacefully.

Israel was very clear. They ""do not understand this point of view, which calls for Israel to be dragged into this quagmire". and wouldn't even attend the two UN meetings to condemn Russia. They're not going to sacrifice good relations they've had with Russia for people who are supporting Svoboda, who the World Jewish Congress wanted banned because they are neo-Nazis, but who, thanks to US & EU help, now have the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine. When was the last time we saw ultranationalists neonazis with so many major positions in a European government? Israel remembers all too well. This little propaganda ploy, a flyer distributed by 3 unidentified men, is too ludicrously transparent for words. All it's missing are pictures little babies in incubators in the header and footer.

The Wolfowitz Doctrine backfiring spectacularly

Transdniester declared independence in 1990.

In 2006, Transdniester held a referendum to secede from Ukraine and join Russia and reasserted its demand for independence.

Bad timing for the neolibs and neocons in DC to have done this. Their IMF Austerity package to slave away for the EU isn't enticing enough to change people's minds about which country they want to be linked with.

Moldova’s Breakaway Region Asks Putin to Recognize Sovereignty
By Olga Tanas and Andra Timu April 16, 2014

Moldova’s breakaway pro-Russian region of Transnistria has appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize its independence after Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

The appeal by the Parliament of Transnistria, city and district council members and community associations “express the aspirations of the people of Transnistria” and is based on the results of referendums held in 1991, 1995 and 2006, the parliament of the unrecognized state said on its website.

“Transnistria is a Russian-language land, more than 90 percent of Transnistrians speak and think in Russian,” the region’s parliament said in its statement.

"much more honest and more accurate than what the U.S. press corps has been producing" Robert Parry

"Indeed, in my four-plus decades in journalism, I have never seen a more thoroughly biased and misleading performance by the major U.S. news media. Even during the days of Ronald Reagan – when much of the government’s modern propaganda structure was created – there was more independence in major news outlets. There were media stampedes off the reality cliff during George H.W. Bush’s Persian Gulf War and George W. Bush’s Iraq War, both of which were marked by demonstrably false claims that were readily swallowed by the big U.S. news outlets.

But there is something utterly Orwellian in the current coverage of the Ukraine crisis, including accusing others of “propaganda” when their accounts – though surely not perfect – are much more honest and more accurate than what the U.S. press corps has been producing."

About Catherina

There are times that one wishes one was smarter than one is so that when one looks out at the world and sees the problems one wishes one knew the answers and I don\'t know the answers. I think sometimes one wishes one was dumber than one is so one doesn\'t have to look out into the world and see the pain that\'s out there and the horrible situations that are out there, and not know what to do - Bernie Sanders http://www.democraticunderground.com/128040277
