Scientists: Earth Endangered by New Strain of Fact-Resistant Humans

MINNEAPOLIS (The Borowitz Report) – Scientists have discovered a powerful new strain of fact-resistant humans who are threatening the ability of Earth to sustain life, a sobering new study reports.

The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota, identifies a virulent strain of humans who are virtually immune to any form of verifiable knowledge, leaving scientists at a loss as to how to combat them.

“These humans appear to have all the faculties necessary to receive and process information,” Davis Logsdon, one of the scientists who contributed to the study, said. “And yet, somehow, they have developed defenses that, for all intents and purposes, have rendered those faculties totally inactive.”

More worryingly, Logsdon said, “As facts have multiplied, their defenses against those facts have only grown more powerful.”

“Our research is very preliminary, but it’s possible that they will become more receptive to facts once they are in an environment without food, water, or oxygen,” he said.

Amazon is starting a video-only subscription service to rival Netflix Inc

And they are raising Prime fees.

The company also revealed a monthly payment option for Amazon Prime, the service targeted at frequent online shoppers that previously cost $99 a year for free shipping on many orders, as well as video and music.

Prime Video, which includes on-demand access to thousands of movies and original Amazon productions, will cost $8.99 a month. Amazon Prime will be available on a monthly payment plan of $10.99.

The video plan and new monthly payment for Amazon Prime show the U.S. company is catering to customer calls for more flexible options than a year-long commitment. Those making the annual payment will get a 25 percent discount compared with monthly rates.

CBS News investigation finds Kim Davis’ lawyer behind anti-LGBT bills in 20 states

The lawyer who represented Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis after she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses told CBS News that his group was also behind anti-LGBT legislation being pushed in at least 20 states.

After governors in North Carolina and Mississippi recently signed laws limiting the rights of LGBT people, CBS News began investigating why so many anti-LGBT bills were cropping up in state legislatures around the country.

The network found that the conservative group Liberty Counsel had placed lawyers in all 50 states to draft legislation and advise lawmakers on how to rein in the rights of LGBT people in response to a Supreme Court ruling which legalized same-sex marriage in 2015.

CBS determined that bills tied to Liberty Counsel have been filed in at least 20 states so far.

Sarah Palin will not be appearing as a surrogate for Donald Trump at the Wyoming Republican Party convention this weekend, the state's GOP announced on Thursday.

According to a release on the Republican Party of Wyoming’s website, the Trump campaign said she would not be attending. It provided no explanation for the last-minute cancellation.

“The Donald Trump campaign has informed the Wyoming Republican Party that Sarah Palin, the scheduled surrogate speaker for the presidential candidate, will not be attending the State GOP Convention,” the release says. “Former Governor Palin was scheduled to speak to the convention delegates Saturday morning between 10-11am along with presidential candidate Ted Cruz and John Kasich surrogate Governor Butch Otter of Idaho.”

Triclosan, A Chemical Used in Antibacterial Soaps, is Found to Impair Muscle Function

In a new study, the chemical inhibited muscle activity in individual human heart cells, mice and minnows

The antibacterial substance, which was first developed in the 1960s to prevent bacterial infections in hospitals, has since been incorporated into everything from hand soaps to toothpastes to mouthwashes. Manufacturers see it as a marketing bonus, increasing consumer confidence that a particular product kills harmful bacteria. Even some household products—such as kitchen utensils, toys and bedding—include triclosan.

In recent years, though, research has shed light on a number of problems with employing triclosan so widely. Studies have shown that the chemical can disrupt the endocrine systems of several different animals, binding to receptor sites in the body, which prevents the thyroid hormone from functioning normally. Additionally, triclosan penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream more easily than previously thought, and has turned up everywhere from aquatic environments to human breast milk in troubling quantities.

To this list of concerns, add one more: A new paper, published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicates that triclosan impairs muscle function in both animals and humans. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of California, Davis, found that the chemical hinders human muscle contractions at the cellular level and inhibits normal muscle functioning in both fish and mice.

“Triclosan is found in virtually everyone’s home and is pervasive in the environment,” said lead author Isaac Pessah. “These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health.”

Oh how the mighty are falling...............

Valeant drug company got some bad news today.
Valeant bond investor Centerbridge notifies company of intention to call a default.

You may remember Valeant as having a history of buying up smaller drug companies ( a LOT of them) and then raising the prices of their drugs.
The company raised prices on all its brand name drugs 66% in 2015, five times more than its closest industry peer.
The cost of Valeant flucytosine is 10,000% higher in the United States than in Europe.

Valeant is known for buying companies and laying off their employees to achieve savings, while accumulating a debt of about $30 billion.
It spends an amount equivalent to only 3% of its sales on research and development, which it views as risky and inefficient compared with buying existing drugs. Traditional big drug companies spend 15 to 20% of sales on research and development.
Valeant also pays extremely low taxes because it is officially based in Canada, although Mr. Pearson operates from New Jersey."

Valeant's acquisition of Bausch & Lomb in 2013, and Paragon Vision Services in 2015, is alleged to have given the company control of over 80% of the production pipeline for hard contact lenses. A series of unilateral price increases beginning in Fall 2015 spurred the FTC's investigation.

Valeant is now being investigated by FTC, and 2 State's Attorney's offices.

And ts biggest bondholder, Centerbridge, is calling a default on Valeant bonds.
