"Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim" (church-front) sign stirs controversy..

Source: KHOU.com (Houston, Texas)

...That marquee standing outside a non-denominational church has become the talk of the town in Leakey — about 90 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The Church in the Valley is run by Pastor Ray Miller. Miller declined an interview but did say the sign was solely his idea. He said he changes the sign weekly and this isn't the first bold statement to be displayed.

The pastor said he feels strongly about the upcoming presidential election and feels the message on the marquee speaks for itself.

Since it is a church, it is classified as a non-profit organization. That means, by law, it can not endorse a political candidate... (Video in article)

CBS4 Investigates: Palm Beach County’s 2012 Ballot Debacle...

Source: CBS Miami

...It was Palm Beach Supervisor of Elections, Susan Bucher, and her team who discovered the mistake. In two races, winners including Paglia were announced and certified… when they were actually the losers. Bucher said Palm Beach’s optical scan election system had – unbeknownst to anyone-mixed up the race results. As a result, the wrong winners and losers were called. When asked by CBS4 Investigative reporter, Michele Gillen, what is was like to declare the wrong winners? Bucher said, “It humiliating. It was awful. It was never our intent.”...

...Bucher said that if the audit was done on all races there could be other elections where the wrong winner was chosen. However, what is most outrageous to Bucher is that this technical problem, she told Gillen, was known by the vendor. The company did not ever reveal this information to her.

“We took over this equipment in 2007. They never disclosed the error,” said Bucher “The company didn’t own up to it real quickly and neither did the state. And we had to prove that it was a software error and we did so.”

...“You know the first thing that they tell you is you’re going to scare the voters,” Bucher said. “Well you know what… we’re scared too.”

Why Not Debate Military Suicides?...

From the Tuscon Citizen:

[fint size="3"]Why Not Debate Military Suicides?
by Michael Patrick Brewer on Oct. 09, 2012, under Veterans Worldwide

The exponential increase in the rate of military and veteran suicides in the past year is not a sideshow to our war on terrorism, it is a war of its own, a war against a terrorized psyche.

Approximately 7000 veterans and active duty military service members have cashed in their mortal lives in the past couple years. For each combatant killed in action 25 are dying by suicide.

“The dog barks and the caravan passes.”

In a new-found healthy and supportive environment of, “support the troops,” contrary to the Vietnam war where the suicides were off the charts, (111,000 est.), the dominant culture has not yet penetrated the impact of 4-5 tours of duty for these young warriors. Neither have the clinical mental health professionals. They may understand the symptoms, but few have discerned the full impact of multiple deployments...

Given that Romney is toeing the Rep. party line on increased U.S. military presence in the Mideast (Iran & Syria et.al.), shouldn't he and the president debate the catastrophic effect of war, and the subsequent heightened rate of suicide among our active duty soldiers & veterans?

New Obama Ad (calling Romney 'Dishonest') features footage from debate, Romney ad..

Source: CNN

(CNN) – President Barack Obama's campaign on Saturday released their second television ad which argues Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was dishonest at Wednesday's debate and in one of his own television ads.

This ad, like one released Thursday - the day after the debate - uses footage from the faceoff between Obama and Romney.

"I'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut," Romney can be seen saying on the debate stage in the spot.

Obama and Romney sparred over that point at the debate, and the campaigns have waged war over it since on the campaign trail and in statements...

Is Jack Welch working for Karl Rove? (in accused Obama of altering jobs numbers)...

...As everybody now knows, Jack Welch, the former chairman General Electric instantly tweeted, “Unbelievable jobs numbers…these Chicago guys will do anything..can’t debate so change numbers.” Welch has 1.3 million followers on Twitter, and, as Media Matters reported later in the day, Welch’s unsubstantiated charges were echoed by Rush Limbaugh at least seven conservative reporters on Fox News and elsewhere.

...Here’s what happened: According to an article by David Podvin and Carolyn Kay, in June 1999, just after George W. Bush declared his candidacy for president, Welch, then Chairman and CEO of General Electric, the parent company of NBC, was contacted by Karl Rove who reportedly told him that a Bush administration would introduce sweeping deregulatory measures in the broadcast industry that would create untold billions of dollars in additional profits for GE.

Welch not only became a vocal supporter of Bush, he also decided that the news division of NBC would to put aside its journalistic integrity and instead look out for the corporate interests of GE and do everything in its powers to elect Bush. According to a report by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Los Angeles) cited in the Los Angeles Times, come election time, November 7, 2000, Welch had access to raw election data that were not available to his own newsmen at NBC and appeared to play a key role in getting NBC to call Florida, and with it, the national election, for George W. Bush at almost the same time, John Ellis—George W. Bush’s cousin and Fox News’ senior decision desk official—made the call for Fox.

Three elections later, it seems that Welch’s affection for Karl Rove’s candidate is unabated. On September 20, when Romney was still foundering, Welch went on Fox News and insisted Romney would triumph. “Mitt Romney will win and I don’t want you to get weak-kneed….. Nobody’s getting weak-kneed.”...

J.P. Morgan Accused of Fraud...

Source: Wall Street Journal

New York's top prosecutor filed a civil complaint against J.P. Morgan JPM +1.21% Chase Co., alleging widespread fraud in the sale of mortgage-backed securities in the run-up to the financial crisis.

Eric Schneiderman, New York's attorney general, filed the civil lawsuit in New York state court Monday. The case is the first brought under the aegis of a law enforcement group that was formed by President Barack Obama in January to pursue alleged wrongdoing related to the financial crisis.

More cases from the group are expected to follow.

"We intend to follow up with similar actions against other sponsors and underwriters of RMBS," said an official in the attorney general's office...

California Voters to Decide on Labeling Genetically Modified Foods - PROP #37...

Under Proposition 37, food containing genetically engineered ingredients would have to be labeled as such, including thousands of packaged products that now fill grocery stores and routinely make their way into Californians' kitchens...

...Almost anything that's not organic and comes in a box, a bag or a can probably has some genetically engineered content. The prevalence of such ingredients, also known as genetically modified organisms - or GMOs - is the reason advocates are calling for labels.

... The parent companies for Cheerios, Chef Boyardee, Nestle, Coke and Pepsi are pouring millions into defeating the measure. With them are companies such as Monsanto, DuPont and Bayer that make pesticides and genetically modified seeds. Thanks largely to those businesses, the "no" side has raised $32.5 million.

Pushing for Proposition 37 are organic farmers, advocates and food manufacturers such as Lundberg's, Nature's Path, Clif Bar and Amy's Kitchen. They have helped the "yes" side raise $4.3 million

Third of Public Fears Police Use of Drones...

WASHINGTON — More than a third of Americans worry their privacy will suffer if drones like those used to spy on U.S. enemies overseas become the latest police tool for tracking suspected criminals at home, according to an Associated Press-National Constitution Center poll.

Congress has directed the Federal Aviation Administration to come up with safety regulations that will clear the way for routine domestic use of unmanned aircraft within the next three years. The government is under pressure from a wide range of interests to open U.S. skies to drones. Oil companies want them to monitor pipelines. Environmentalists want them to count sea lions on remote islands. Farmers want them to fly over crops with sensors that can detect which fields are wet and which need watering. They’re already being used to help fight forest fires. And the list goes on.

Manufacturers are also keen to cash in on what they expect to be a burgeoning new drone market. Government and commercial drone-related expenditures are forecast to total $89 billion worldwide over the next decade. On the leading edge of that new market are state and local police departments, who say that in many cases drones are cheaper, more practical and more effective than manned aircraft. Most of them would be small drones, generally weighing less than 55 pounds. They could be used, for example, to search for missing children or to scout a location ahead of a SWAT team.

But privacy advocates caution that drones equipped with powerful cameras, including the latest infrared cameras that can “see” through walls, listening devices and other information-gathering technology raise the specter of a surveillance society in which the activities of ordinary citizens are monitored and recorded by the authorities...

...The Association For Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), an industry trade group, has said once drones are allowed to fly in U.S. airspace, "the civil market has the potential to eclipse the defense market."

Automatic Budget Cuts Now Spook Some Key Republicans (Obama to be scapegoated)...

Source: SEATTLE TIMES

Rep. John Boehner, once "pretty happy" with the cuts, now calls them a threat.
________________________________

WASHINGTON — Republican congressional leaders are backing away from a trigger system of forced spending cuts that they hailed 13 months ago as a herald of fiscal discipline and for which GOP lawmakers voted by large margins.

With the forced cuts — called sequestration on Capitol Hill — scheduled by law to take effect Jan. 2 and no deal in sight to replace them, the Republicans say the reductions could harm the military, and they're blaming President Obama.

Obama
, in turn, is accusing the Republicans of flip-flopping by rejecting the strong budget controls they once championed...
