It's a cosmic joke. So horrible you just HAVE to laugh.
And it spawns a lot of dumb jokes that would never have existed if not for the actual horrible occurrence.

I'm kidding. I'm KIDDIN! Look, actually I sorta agree that it shouldn't be funny. Really. NO DOUBT, it would surely be a LOT less funny if it were someone I knew and cared for.
But the only way I can see something like that being NOT FUNNY AT ALL is when it happens to YOU. Then it's not funny AT ALL.
Unless you're ANYBODY else who is NOT a relative or close friend of the unfortunate.
ALL I'm saying is, it's unavoidable. Even if we all observed a moment of silence now for the poor dude, instead of laughing and joking, you know what would happen?
If we were REALLY quiet, we would all hear the universe just absolutely laughing its freakin' ass off.
