In order to understand what happened this week in Colorado's U.S. Senate race, which saw the first ouster of a sitting U.S. Senator from this state in decades, we return to a story that came out on Election Day by Politico's Neil Malhotra, titled "Why Do Voters Believe Lies?"
The lede of the story? Colorado GOP Rep. Cory Gardner.
"There is no such thing as a federal personhood bill.” Or so said Colorado Rep. Cory Gardner, the Republican candidate currently locked in a tight Senate race against Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Udall, in an interview a few weeks ago. It was a surprising statement—not only because the federal personhood bill, otherwise known as Life Begins at Conception Act, does in fact exist but also because Gardner himself co-sponsored it. “This is all politics,” he added, blaming Udall for spreading untruths about him.
It was, indeed, all about politics. Gardner’s strong support of personhood legislation might have bolstered his popularity among conservative Republicans. But after declaring his Senate bid, Gardner found himself having to appeal to a more moderate electorate (Colorado voters have repeatedly rejected a personhood ballot measure) and changed his position on the issue. So far, his equivocation hasn’t hurt him…

Note: Ordinarily this would post in the Colorado forum, but Gardner is already one of the GOP'S "golden boys". His self-serving mendacity has been overlooked for years as they continue to groom him for more upward mobility. He is going to be increasingly visible on the national scene. Rather than castigating him for his bad habit of outright lying they're turning him into a model for others. Much as I hated having him as my alleged congressman for four years, the thought of having him not representing me in the senate for six years just turns my stomach. We don't dare take our eyes off him, he has proven himself utterly unworthy of trust on any level.

Colorado has lost a statesman and gained an opportunist. As congressman, Gardner has spent four years ignoring the constituents of his district, reliably showing up only for photo ops. Now he has an entire state to ignore.

Tonight we celebrate
Tonight we celebrate. We’ve invested our time and energies, walked hundreds of miles, knocked on thousands of doors, circulated petitions, made uncountable phone calls, delivered literature and yard signs, hosted candidates and events. We’ve had long days sometimes followed by sleepless nights, then we’ve done it all over again.
We have registered new voters, welcoming them to this exasperating yet magnificent thing called democracy. We have voted and relentlessly encouraged all of our neighbors to do likewise. We have embraced the promises that were gifted to us by our predecessors, and we have worked to maintain and improve those ideals to make them even better for our successors.
We have seen our dedication challenged by those who seek to corrupt the process; but by our constant exercise of our belief in the rightness of our cause we have answered those challenges with renewed and determined strength. They have confirmed the value of who we are by trying to buy what they cannot otherwise win. We walk our talk, and no amount of dark money can take that from us.
There are those among us who have stood in the crossfire on our behalf, and we honor them. They persevere and endure the sometimes unspeakable in their willingness to serve, and in so doing they honor us. It is proper that we revel in standing shoulder to shoulder with such as these.
So, yes, tonight we celebrate. We celebrate who we are.

It's really quite simple.
That's what I've been saying to those who still haven't decided. Cory Gardner quickly became the poster child of self-serving gimme politicians, setting new speed records in holding out his hand to the highest bidders. He'll sell out anyone - women, sick kids, immigrants, seniors, the environment - if the money into his pocket is big enough.
Mark Udall may not be perfect, but he has a long record of being on the side of everyone and everything that Gardner has thrown under the bus in the interest of his own personal advancement.
